Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

Chapter 149: Chapter 149: I suspect you’re targeting me

WHAT? The proctor can also step in as an examiner?

Yang Yu was filled with question marks, his emotions plunging from the heights of joy like a rollercoaster in a precipitous drop, almost careening off the track.

”I finally beat the strongest examiner here, and according to the usual script, shouldn’t there be fireworks and drums, amazed by my ability, and a warm welcome for me to join the Library? Why are you not playing by the rules? I defeat a tough one, and an even tougher one shows up. Are you deliberately targeting me?”

A herd of ten thousand alpacas ran wild on the vast grasslands of Yang Yu’s heart, feeling as if he had tirelessly battled a BOSS all day, only to be told that the BOSS was merely an Elite Monster, which was downright doggone frustrating.

”As you know, Dian Wen was substituting for someone else,” Tiya Luo said with a smile, ”The Library’s rules dictate that if a team wins the first round, in the next round we must send someone stronger. And on-site, I’m the strongest, so naturally, I should step in.”

The intelligence stated that one needed to consecutively defeat two Advanced Members of the Library above two stars, but it didn’t say the second one had to be stronger than the first.

Yang Yu fell silent, ”So why did you send the strongest Magician right from the start... Wouldn’t it have been better to send a weakling first to test the waters? Are you deliberately not allowing people to pass the Martial Arts Exam to become members of the Library?”

”Of course not,” Tiya Luo replied with a smile, shaking his head, ”Let’s not joke with each other. The regulations are to be followed. As a Monster Tamer, you should be prepared...”

Seeing Yang Yu tilting his head, Tiya Luo’s smile came to an abrupt end; he stroked his slightly stubbly chin and asked with extreme uncertainty, ”You don’t, by any chance, not know about the special requirements for Monster Tamers taking the Martial Arts Exam, do you...”

”Is that a thing?” Yang Yu was puzzled. ”How come I have never heard of such a thing?”

Now it was Tiya Luo’s turn to be at a loss for words, ”Didn’t they give you a booklet after you signed up for the Martial Arts Exam? Didn’t it state in the last few pages...”

”Eh? I thought it was just like the booklet given during the entrance examination...”

Quickly retrieving the booklet received upon registering for the Martial Arts Exam from the System, he flipped it open and saw in black and white, ”If a Monster Tamer registers, the following additional rules apply...”

The final item read, ”If a Monster Tamer wins the first round, an examiner present must take the initiative to conduct the second round of the exam.”

”Are you discriminating against Monster Tamers? When I came to the All Things Library, the guard didn’t hesitate to charge me an extra thirty thousand in toll fees. And here I am, being treated differently again. Did the Monster Tamer eat your rice or something? You should have told me about this earlier...”

Yang Yu was irate, having known this, he wouldn’t have brought his team here today.

What made Yang Yu even angrier was the fact that Tiya Luo’s face now showed an air of taking it for granted. ”Isn’t this common knowledge? Are you telling me... you came to take the Library Exam without knowing anything about the Library?”

”So what if I did? Why are you targeting Monster Tamers at every turn?”

Yang Yu responded with the same matter-of-fact tone, and Tiya Luo let out a long sigh, ”It’s a bit complex to explain. In short, there have been numerous incidents in the Library’s history where Monster Tamers’ demons got out of control. The control over Monster Tamers is extremely strict; if they don’t possess great strength, they are prohibited from becoming members of the Library.”

”Instead of investigating the underlying reasons, you make Monster Tamers the scapegoats. Your fairness at the All Things Library is impressive.”

He had planned for this day for over a week, but to be turned away at the door with a simple ”You’re a Monster Tamer, so the difficulty is higher for you” was something Yang Yu could not swallow.

Even if he didn’t consider his own situation, he also had to think about the one million he had spent; Yang Yu didn’t have enough money to go through this kind of ordeal several times.

But what could he do about it if he couldn’t swallow his pride? By coming here for the examination, it’s assumed that he was aware of all the rules.

”Forget it. I didn’t use a demon in the last fight, and I don’t plan to use one in the next fight either.”

Saying this, Yang Yu took He Meng out from the pocket of his White Jin Robe and headed for the entrance, tossing He Meng out of the combat stage.

”I had it stand by outside. Now, can you please be good and switch to another examiner?”

Tiya Luo was Level seventy-six, with Intelligence over two thousand and Physical Defense over three hundred. Moreover, Tiya Luo had seen his trump card.

Without even thinking about it, Yang Yu knew he didn’t have a one in a thousand chance of defeating Tiya Luo.

All Yang Yu could do now was to try to persuade Tiya Luo, hoping he’d switch to an opponent who would be easier to beat.

But Tiya Luo just smiled and shook his head, ”I’m sorry, rules are rules. Even if your demon doesn’t participate, you as a Monster Tamer must defeat me to join the Library. I have a hunch that your Slime is not ordinary. Let me see the full strength of you and your demon.”

It’s not that I don’t want to, it’s just really impossible!

Looking at He Meng, who had given up on the battle and was napping outside the arena, Yang Yu helplessly furrowed his brow.

He Meng was smarter than Yang Yu had anticipated. Knowing that they were simply taking an exam, with no real danger involved, it saw no need to assist him.

”He’ll need to take a few hard knocks before he realizes who’s important and who’s not, to start genuinely worshipping me, instead of suddenly thrown into random tasks.”

He Meng had already silently decided not to help Yang Yu this time. No matter how much Yang Yu gestured for it, it stayed put, refusing to budge.

No matter how much he gestured, He Meng wouldn’t come back, so Yang Yu could only scratch the back of his head in resignation.

Favorability was fixed at -10, making it even less obedient, which was truly problematic.

Turning away, Yang Yu looked at Tiya Luo with a look of utter hopelessness, ”Well, I know I can’t beat you. To surrender... can I lose just half? How about you give me back five hundred thousand of the one million I paid to sign up?”

Of course, the All Things Library would not allow Yang Yu to do this. Once the money was in the hands of the All Things Library, it was like water splashed out – impossible to get it back, unless in a dream.

So, Yang Yu had no choice but to grit his teeth and force himself into battle with Tiya Luo, along with Bai Jin and Iyas.

Unfortunately, with a huge gap in levels and attributes, plus no prep time, Yang Yu didn’t have the slightest chance of winning.

What made it even worse was that his White Shield wouldn’t regenerate; the White Shield on Yang Yu could at best withstand one more magical strike before breaking.

Tiya Luo knew this too and started the battle by conjuring a small firewall, hiding behind it while preparing another AOE magic spell.

Glaring resentfully at the firewall Tiya Luo had created, Yang Yu simply conceded, leaving the martial arts exam venue of the All Things Library dejectedly.

Everyone present did not question Yang Yu’s strength due to his swift defeat. Instead, they looked at him with renewed respect.

Being able to accurately assess the gap in power between two individuals was also a mark of strength. The fact that Yang Yu could concede without a moment’s hesitation as soon as he saw Tiya Luo cast a spell proved that he was aware of his own limits, which actually made him more fearsome.

The journalists of the Library were already starting to jot down notes for their articles.

”Shocking! The Library’s genius actually lost to.....”, ”The real truth behind Dian Wen’s defeat is...”, ”Young and fearless, this challenger claims that against someone as weak as Dian Wen, he could beat ten like him.”
