Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

Chapter 142: Chapter 142: The life of the rich is often so simple and plain, yet dull.

After receiving my report card, my friends and I returned to the inn.

I had already been staying here for over a week.

Although the decor was far from the luxurious five-star hotels, the simple style had a charm of its own.

I quite liked it here.

The innkeeper, a mother with a frail son called Shu Jing.

He was a candidate for the All Things Library this year.

Over the past week, he had studied diligently and assiduously to prepare for the Library exam.

At this moment, he sat at the same table with me, hesitantly opening his report card, his facial expression going from calm to surprised, then to despair.

No doubt he had failed.

And it seemed impossible to retake the exam.

For a family running a small inn, the registration fee of five million wasn’t easily cobbled together.

Seeing their dejected son, his parents wanted to step forward to comfort him but did not know how to begin.

I handed my report card to the young man, asking him to open it.

Upon opening the report card, his expression shifted from loss to surprise, and eventually to curiosity.

Curious about why there was a big fat zero on my report card.

I smiled, pulled out five million from my trousers, and laid it on the table, indicating that I was willing to sponsor him.

The boy’s expressions changed again, blending thankfulness, surprise, and bewilderment, he slowly began to speak and politely refused my offer.

I, nonchalantly, added another two million on top.

I told him that it was payment for tutoring he deserved, and if he refused, I would throw the total of seven million into the sewer.

At first, the boy’s face held suspicion; I casually picked up a one-thousand-yuan Gold Coin and tossed it into the sewer in front of him.

I am a man who dares to say and do.

Realizing this, the boy quickly secured the Gold Coins, thanking me profusely, tears of gratitude in his eyes, babbling inarticulately.

The thought that I might have inadvertently altered a young man’s life trajectory brought a smile to my lips.

The lives of the wealthy are often so plain and unadorned, yet also tedious.

...

After safely storing away all the Gold Coins, Shu Jing’s family sincerely expressed their gratitude to Yang Yu.

Shu Jing’s parents also hoped that he would rally and bravely give another year a try, humble yet proud, they would support him from behind, but with tight budgets, and Yang Yu’s seven million rekindled their hope.

But to just accept Yang Yu’s seven million made them quite restless, after some discussion, they decided that Shu Jing would write an IOU and give it to Yang Yu.

That seven million would be considered their debt to Yang Yu, promising that if Shu Jing was admitted to the Library, their family would strive to repay it.

Yang Yu did not refuse; he had already thrown a one-thousand-yuan Gold Coin into the sewer to make the other party accept his kindness. To refuse now would be counterproductive.

After thanking Yang Yu again with solemnity, Shu Jing bashfully dashed into the kitchen to help his parents prepare a lavish dinner to treat Yang Yu.

The guests who came for the exams had already checked out and dispersed early in the morning, and Yang Yu’s group was left with plenty of room in the dining area on the first floor.

”Speaking of which, what about that Gold Coin you tossed into the sewer? That was a full one thousand!”

Iyas stared intently at the sewer drain, almost wanting to pry it open to dig out the one-thousand-yuan Gold Coin.

After tasting the fine wine served by Shu Jing’s father and tossing the IOU into the System, Yang Yu said nonchalantly, ”Consider it a tip for the sewage workers.”

In the game, Gold Coins came quickly and left quickly. For Yang Yu, who had already pocketed five million, losing a thousand yuan didn’t really register. It was like accidentally buying the wrong tools, a small loss to ward off greater misfortune.

”I’m warning you, don’t go digging through the sewer at night for that thousand. You’re a Noble Elf Warrior; it hasn’t come to that.”

”What do you really think of me! There’s no way I’d do that sort of thing.”

Though Iyas couldn’t deny feeling a bit tempted.

”If you love money so much, just work diligently, and I’ll give you some spending money every month,” said Yang Yu with a smile. ”But you must be thrifty, or I won’t mind letting you experience the pain of earning money again.”

Iyas snorted, ”I don’t care about money! It’s just that it’s a necessity in human society, so that’s why I care about it...”

”You mean to say, you don’t want the spending money I’d give you?”

”Of course I do! Why wouldn’t I take what you’re giving! Didn’t you say it’s a necessity? With that, I can enjoy that cold, sweet thing again, right?”

It seems Iyas had begun to gradually integrate into human society.

The village girl cultivation plan was starting to show results, Yang Yu was quite pleased, and would have to continue to put more effort into nurturing Iyas, so she could become a reliable Priest.

Then Yang Yu turned his attention to Bai Jin,

”Don’t worry, Bai Jin, you’ll get it too.”

”Oh, that’s not necessary...” Bai Jin awkwardly declined, ”I don’t need any spending money. As long as I can be with you... Hey, hey, what a sly man, using such a tactic to separate our economy from yours. You get to enjoy the finest meals while we’re left nibbling on tough, tasteless bread. Wait until we’re desperate, then offer us a little tasty food. Making us feel deeply indebted, completely devoted. I won’t fall for that.”

”The expenses for food, lodging, and transport on the road are still on me; as long as I don’t starve, you won’t go hungry. Consider the pocket money purely a reward.”

Yang Yu said, smiling amiably and patting Bai Jin on the shoulder,

”Don’t turn down my kind gesture.”

...

...

At this time.

All Things Library, Candidates’ Exam Papers Reading Room.

Since the first entrance exam for the All Things Library, the papers from each year had been stuffed into file bags, displayed in the Reading Room, watched over by guardians.

Half of the All Things Library exam papers are subjective questions with no standardized answers. As long as one’s argument is logical and well-founded, expressing unique views and opinions, full marks can be scored.

Since it’s all about personal opinions, one could glean someone’s thoughts at the time from their answers.

If someone wanted to write a biography of a celebrity who was born from or spent time studying in the Library, the biographers would think of this place first, applying for permission to review that person’s past exam papers for inspiration.

Writers are most interested in these papers, followed by the Library members.

The knowledge levels of these papers are classified as Level E, which any ordinary family could afford to examine.

However, only members of Two Stars and above are allowed to enter and read here.

Among the many members, there are always some who are very interested in the new students of the year; they want to see if it’s the daughter or young master of some family who got in, or if a local pulled off an upset, so they can forge ties with those with potential.
