After rejecting my celebrity husband

Chapter 516: Chapter 519 The Whereabouts of That Person [5]

Listening to the voice on the radio, Xu Pei gripped the handles of her bag, her hands tightening nervously.

As the saying goes, a guilty conscience needs no accuser.

”A bunch of good-for-nothings!” the taxi driver muttered under his breath, ”A reward for information, huh, they only know how to waste our taxpayers’ money. With these people, they couldn’t solve a fart of a case...”

”Isn’t there... surveillance?” Xu Pei whispered.

”Surveillance?” the taxi driver snorted, ”Let me tell you, the cameras are only sharp when it comes to catching traffic violations. In cases like this, they don’t work. If there were surveillance, they would have pulled the footage immediately, why would they need to pay for clues?”

”So you mean the surveillance failed?” A glint of joy flashed in Xu Pei’s eyes.

The driver chuckled, ”I’m just talking nonsense; who knows...”

Xu Pei also felt she had asked a bit too much and promptly shut her mouth, no longer speaking.

The car made its way into the city, and Xu Pei suddenly changed her mind, ”Take me to the Workers’ Stadium instead. With what happened in Houhai, I don’t want to go there anymore.”

A moment later, the taxi driver stopped at the location she indicated. Xu Pei casually bought a newspaper from the roadside, then took another car to Houhai. As soon as she got on, Zhuo Yannan’s call came through.

”Director Xu, when are you coming to the office?”

”I... I’m not feeling well, I’ll take the day off today. Whatever it is, we can talk about it tomorrow,” said Xu Pei, feigning illness.

”Alright then, you rest well, we’ll talk tomorrow.”

”Wait!” Xu Pei hurried to stop him, ”Is there an urgent matter?”

”It’s like this, Xiaoqian’s recording plan is postponed for a week, and I wanted to discuss the specific adjustments with you,” Zhuo Yannan said.

Frowning, Xu Pei’s lips curled into a cold smile, though her tone feigned ignorance, ”Why suddenly adjust the plan? Has something happened to Xiao Qian?”

”You don’t know?” Zhuo Yannan asked back.

”Know what?”

Zhuo Yannan hesitated for a moment, and in the end, he did not tell her about Luo Xiaoqian’s disappearance, ”Nothing... I just thought that you and President Leng were so close, I assumed you knew the inside story. Nothing urgent, rest well, I’ll hang up now!”

”Alright.” Xu Pei did not continue to press, and hung up the phone.

Her fingers lightly tapped on the phone screen, her lips slightly upturned, smiling coldly.

Even though Zhuo Yannan didn’t explain, it wasn’t hard to guess from the fragments he spoke; something must have happened to Luo Xiaoqian.

Hmph!

Faced with such an incident, no woman could withstand it, could they?!

”Excuse me, where would you like to get off?” the taxi driver glanced at the police cordon not far ahead, ”It seems we can’t go forward.”

”Just pull over here,” Xu Pei said as she took out a bill from her wallet and handed it to him, ”Keep the change.”

She pushed the door open and got out, seeing from a distance that the police cordon had marked off the scene of last night’s incident, surrounded by many onlookers.

Xu Pei frowned in annoyance; judging by the situation, getting the cheque back now was definitely impossible.

Could it be that she had been exposed?

No, that wasn’t right. If they had really found the cheque, they would have come to her immediately, but they had not done so. With the heavy rain yesterday, that cheque could no longer serve as evidence.

What the driver had said wasn’t without reason; the surveillance here must have failed. It seemed like even the heavens were helping her.

Great!

Once she disposed of that car, all problems would cease to be problems.
