High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2039: Chapter 260: The Remaining Selection Matches (Part 1)

Moon Council’s secret technique?

Zheng Qing saw it in the Black Prison; it is indeed an incredibly powerful magic, capable of combining the magic power of five Upper House Members to unleash near-legendary strength.

But Su Shijun really did not teach the Absolution this secret technique.

Never mind that it might require the bloodline of the Moon Council’s five clans; how could a mere ordinary small Hunting Team bear such great consequences? Have the people spreading these rumors had their brains eaten by zombies?

The young wizard muttered to himself, patiently refuting all sorts of strange statements—

”No, as the instructor, Su Councilor only provided guidance within the scope of the syllabus, any joint strike secret technique is purely fictitious...”

”The Absolution Hunting Team is not recruiting new members this year, thank you!”

”Su Councilor does not attend every match; she has many heavy laboratory tasks to busy herself with...”

”Absolution consistently adheres to the philosophy of ’faster, higher, stronger, cleaner’ in demanding itself...”

”Absolution will continue to focus on its strength, playing each match well...”

”No! We know nothing about Su Shijun’s lover!”

”Absolution Hunting Team has always maintained its stance in the Hunting Competition, any Hunting Team’s regulatory violations must be punished, the purpose and principles of the Hunting Competition should be upheld by all...”

”Rumors! All rumors... Rumors cease in the wise!”

At first, he explained logically and reasonably, but as the questions became more numerous and bizarre, the warlock gradually lost patience, resorting to the tactics of replying like a repeating machine, repeating the scripted responses he’d developed.

Fortunately, the Astronomy Class 08-1 is limited in number, allowing the young wizard to finally bear the heavy pressure and squeeze through the enthusiastic crowd.

”Why don’t they bother you!”

Xin Fat Man squeezed through the crowd, sat down heavily, grumbling as he tugged at his tight collar, looking like a steamed potato.

”Because I’m ill.” The red-faced male wizard hummed, not even bothering to open his eyes, exuding an aura that discouraged any human approach.

The fat wizard chuckled dryly.

”How are you feeling?” He thrust the snack box in front of Zhang Ji Xin—a very friendly gesture for a fat wizard.

”Still alive.”

The red-faced male wizard sniffed, raised an eyelid slit, hesitating for a second before picking a dried plum from the box and tossing it into his mouth, his face immediately showed a tooth-aching sour expression, savoring, and speaking in a slightly dejected tone: ”Experiencing some backlash symptoms of magic power exhaustion, the whole body is sore, magic power is out of control... I feel I can’t participate in tonight’s selection match.”

”What?”

Originally dizzy and muddled, Zheng Qing immediately captured the key information in the sentence, abruptly raising his head to look at Zhang Ji Xin: ”You can’t participate in the match tonight?”

”It’s alright, isn’t there still me?” Xin Fat Man comforted his team captain: ”Jiang Da Headmaster also hasn’t had the chance to enter the scene... Going the furthest, even if the team is short of six people tomorrow, you can simply send out a recruitment notice and assemble a new Hunting Team in no time.”

Though it is said so.

”The Doctor can handle part of the tactical guidance task, Fat Man you take on part of the ’MT’ responsibility,” Zheng Qing counted on his fingers, pondering how Absolution should play the match missing a main Hunter: ”...Fortunately, when we practiced the Bo Fu Clan battle formation before, we rotated positions and became familiar with our roles in advance.”

In the end, he sighed deeply: ”Hope we don’t encounter the Shatak Bird tonight.”

In his impression, those sinister birds with horse-like faces had a fierce aura, and Absolution lacked air combat capabilities, so it would be best not to battle them.

Beside him, Xiao Xiao was carefully wiping his Bamboo Slip Law Book with a silk cloth, and upon hearing the words, he hummed: ”Shatak Birds are a lower servant race in the Dreamland, even lower than the tier of Zu Ges, aside from flying, they have hardly any aggression... Instead of fearing a swarm of flying bugs, you’d better pray not to encounter the Gigantic Absorption Worms, those troublesome things.”

Zheng Qing obediently changed his prayer immediately: ”...Hope we don’t encounter the Gigantic Absorption Worms tonight, Three Pure Ones bless, praise be to Gatling Bodhisattva, Merlin Above, Amen!”

...

Perhaps the young wizard’s piety touched the higher beings.

On Sunday night’s selection match, during the lottery, Zheng Qing very fortunately drew a red-skinned egg containing a Zu Ge from the hat of the puppeteer.

This furry little brown creature, although having sharp teeth and capable of simple magic, is inherently terrified of cats—a fact that ordinary wizards rarely know, but for the young wizards of the Absolution Hunting Team who once crossed the cold wilderness and entered Wusa City, this weakness is as obvious as lice on a bald head.

Thus, on Sunday night, at the Hunting Ground of the Absolution Hunting Team, the audience in the stands and the puppeteers alike enjoyed a game of cat and mouse. The young wizards used summoning spells to summon a large group of diverse cats, chasing the Zu Ges all around, each time the Zu Ge numbers spiked, they would sorrowfully find more cats appearing on the opposite side.

And all the Absolution Hunting Team expended was chicken legs and fish jerky from Xin Fat Man’s ’watch pocket snack pantry’.

”Malicious waste, cruel confrontation.” The fat wizard looked at a Persian cat kicking away a leftover fish head, his face full of heartbreak: ”The loss I incurred tonight must be covered entirely by the team!”

”Reimburse! Fully reimburse!” Zheng Qing readily agreed.

”Including mental damage.” Xin Fat Man, quick-witted, added: ”The fish heads wasted by these little things are enough to last me a month as snacks.”

”Being able to get through tonight peacefully, you should be secretly delighted.” Doctor Xiao sneered repeatedly: ”Mental damage? Would you contribute to the team if you win the match? When last Elder was injured in a match, he didn’t seek reimbursement for nutrition fees from the team!”

Fat Man was instantly speechless.

Rather, Zheng Qing realized: ”Oh, almost forgot... indeed should reimburse a bit of nutrition fee for the Elder, it’s not good to favor some over others.”

Of course, Zu Ges from Sunday night selection match weren’t Absolution’s most fortunate night.

The most fortunate moment was before the fourth selection match, when Zheng Qing drew a Tingdalous hunting dog—a creature tiered above Mi-go and Ancient Leather Giants, comparable to the troublesome Gigantic Absorption Worms. They live in the ’angles’ of time and pursue their hunting targets relentlessly, hence the name ’hunting dog’.

Given that Furry Bean has the bloodline of Miskatonic, Zheng Qing originally planned to ask Gouzi to act as a broker to see if peace could be achieved with those hunting dogs, but Doctor Xiao stopped this foolish idea of the captain; he merely created a transparent glass ball, and then had five teammates hide inside. Those hunting dogs then became completely blind, transformed into wisps of black gas leaping wildly around the Hunting Ground, yet never managed to touch a wizard’s clothing hem.
