High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2017: Chapter 238: Selection Task

The aftermath of the battle that erupted by the Cat Fruit Tree on Saturday night was minimal, almost nonexistent.

Apart from a few blades of grass shredded by magical fluctuations, only the crushed leaves under the feet of the two wizards and the scratched bark from the black cat indicated that something indeed happened here that night.

This outcome was not only because both sides set up a safety barrier before engaging but also because both the human and the cat displayed immense calmness and restraint — they refrained from actions they knew they shouldn’t take.

To be precise, it was the wizard with the wolf head mask who, in a decisive surrender, avoided the tragedy.

The battle was extremely brief.

Samael stood openly in the clearing, ready to withstand the black cat’s three attacks; the black cat merely opened its mouth and spat out a ’Cat Orb’ — a move it learned from the Shadow Cat, which on the Black Prison Battlefield would spew Cat Orbs all around, like a cat-shaped automatic turret, making Zheng Qing rather envious.

At this moment, he had been eagerly anticipating for a long time.

But unfortunately, today its ’Cat Orb’ failed to be profitable.

With the boost from the Little Green Snake, as the ’Cat Orb’ tinged with Forbidden Spell Aura just left the mouth, the watching Sin Bearer frantically waved his arms and shouted loudly:

”Put it away! Put it away! Quickly retrieve your magic!”

While speaking, he drew out a Law Book, casting dozens of streams of light in all directions to reinforce the previously set safety barrier.

The black cat, with puffed cheeks, looked a bit confused at the wizard with the white mask.

The Sin Bearer quickly raised his hands, surrendering on behalf of Samael: ”This is just a small student society assessment, is there a need to use such a terrifying weapon? I surrender for him... No, as the judge, I declare he lost!”

The black cat looked back at Samael.

The wizard with the wolf head mask silently put away the Law Book and turned to leave the field without a word of protest. This straightforward attitude left the black cat feeling lost, reminiscent of an overbearing CEO pinning a woman against the wall, only for her to immediately yield.

The joy of victory was greatly diminished.

What happened to the three virtues and nine chaste principles, to die rather than yield?

With a sense of victory-related frustration, the black cat languidly swallowed the Cat Orb back into its stomach, smacking its lips, feeling the orb dissolve back into threads of magic power, and finally relaxed.

Turning back, the wizard with the white mask was crouched before it, curiously staring at it — of course, through the ’Duck Egg’, the black cat couldn’t tell whether the face behind the mask was curious or held some other expression, but it felt it was likely curiosity.

”Are you a cat from the ’relevant department’?” The Sin Bearer looked the black cat up and down, pondering: ”Seems like someone mentioned earlier that the relevant department brought in a black cat...”

The black cat feigned depth, coldly smiling without speaking.

Joking, if it were so simple to get him to talk, there would be no need to continue with the rest of the assessment. Up until now, Zheng Qing was becoming increasingly interested in the hidden identity play among the Seven Sins and suspected that the founder who set up these rules initially regarded the society as a fun game.

As for verifying with the relevant department, if this Sin Bearer had any sense, he wouldn’t lose his mind and poke around about the relevant department — that would truly attract people from Danghag and Black Prison.

”Well, whether you’re a cat from the relevant department or not, you’ve passed today’s assessment.” Standing up, the wizard with the white mask faded into the night along with his voice: ”Next time, the same time, the same place... hope you keep up your usual luck.”

Luck?

The black cat scoffed at the Sin Bearer’s use of the word, thinking to itself that luck wouldn’t make that wild wolf turn and leave without a word; ultimately, it was its own strength on display!

With pride from its winning return, the black cat fluttered its tail and swaggered back to the Cat Fruit Tree, basking in the worshipful gazes from the surrounding cats, entirely forgetting about the visit to the school hospital the previous night.

But as they say, joy is fleeting, and suffering is the eternal part of life.

Returning to Room 403 from the Cat Fruit Tree, Zheng Qing once again faced the trouble he had delayed for a night. As time passed midnight, a new day began, and the new hunting team training was imminent.

”Tomorrow night... no, you can’t miss tonight’s hunting team training.” Xin Fat Man looked at the young cost student with a face full of bitter anguish: ”While you were away, Jiang Da Headmaster kept a stern face, running battle drills all night, making me three pounds lighter... we could’ve used the halftime to add a tactical simulation, letting us catch our breath!”

”Isn’t losing weight a good thing?” Zheng Qing responded lightly: ”Many witches wish they could lose three pounds of fat overnight but can’t, you’re just lucky.”

The Fat Wizard ignored the cost student’s teasing, stroking his chin, pondering: ”Speaking of, aside from the Monitor, Su Daxu’s temper seemed off tonight too, she didn’t smile once all night... I feel something’s not quite right...”

”It’s here!”

Xiao Xiao, who had been pacing on the balcony, suddenly shouted, interrupting the Fat Wizard’s chilling speculation, followed by the sound of opening and closing windows and the flapping of a paper crane’s wings.

Zheng Qing quickly gave a push to the pondering Fat Man: ”Stop worrying about these things... maybe the two of them just weren’t feeling well... hurry and check the contents on the paper crane!”

Before the Fat Wizard could move, Doctor Xiao came back to the dormitory holding up the opened letter.

Dylan also crawled out of the coffin, adjusting the lights in the room to be brighter.

”To the Absolution Hunting Team!”

Xiao Xiao stood before the desk, facing his three roommates, cleared his throat, and read the letter aloud word for word: ”We are pleased to inform you that your team has passed this campus hunting competition selection task assessment, and Su Shijun has been appointed as your mentor, the assessment result is valid.”

”From now (midnight on October 10) to midnight on October 15, the Absolution Hunting Team will advance with forty-six other teams into the six-day next round of ’selection matches’. The teams completing the selection tasks will gain eligibility to compete for the ’Academy Cup’.”

”In accordance with the principles of ’saving the hunting competition’ and ’green campus cup’, this selection match will take place in the Dreamland. The forty-seven teams participating in the selection will be uniformly led to the examination location by the Hunting Committee from 9 PM to midnight each night, and the committee will also draw unspecified spectators to observe your competition process...”

Before Xiao Xiao could finish reading, Zheng Qing heard Xin Fat Man grumble: ”This round, the Fringe Hunting Team really benefits... it was ours first!”

”Better than those teams that haven’t even been to Dreamland.” Zheng Qing comforted, patting Fat Man’s shoulder, deeply sighing.
