Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Chapter 287: Chapter 90: Hill Can Only Attend the Funeral Being One Step Too Late

Hill did not believe that this lady could cause William any significant trouble.

The various schemes and machinations laid out by the Noble Church wouldn’t come to light while William was still in this world.

Of course, it might not be the Noble Church.

But no matter who was behind it, they couldn’t confront William directly.

In this world, all the strategic planning and cunning ploys could only play a role when the powers involved were somewhat equal.

Overwhelming force was the most important bargaining chip.

Whether for mortals or deities.

Just like the Goddess of the Hunt, if She had not wanted to die, even the God of Time and Space couldn’t have prevented Her from leaving.

And why did the Goddess of the Spring fall so easily?

Because She abandoned Her foundation, transforming from an embodiment of a Law into a parasite that eked out an existence based on faith. She became so weak that a little turbulence could drown Her.

She was a True God, yet She allowed the newly ascended God of Time and Space to seal Her Divine Kingdom, giving Her no chance to escape.

Unless a few more deities from the Dwarves and Elves were to fall, there was simply no one on this continent who could take down William.

Hill felt that, at a time when the World Will was still quite favorable to the Undead Tribe, plotting conspiracies was just like sending them large-scale missions.

It was practically helping William out, saving him the trouble of coming up with things for this bunch to do.

Hill always felt as if he was assisting William, so he didn’t plan to explain this matter too clearly. If the Undead Tribe discovered it, it would just be like Hill had once again led a storyline task.

If the Undead Tribe didn’t find out, then they would wait and see if they could cause some trouble for William in the future. But Hill thought the chances of that happening were slim.

Maybe Hill’s schadenfreude was a bit too obvious, for the next day he received some bad news.

His biological father, Count Pelast, had finally ended his life.

Even if Hill didn’t want to leave the house, he had no choice but to leave his warm homeland and travel to the distant northwest to attend the Earl’s funeral.

The Countess was quick to act, wasn’t she?

Hill languidly instructed List to help him prepare for the trip, as he still had a lot to deal with here!

With a worried frown, Hill went to check on Alice. What was to be done with the little kitten?

Fortunately, Merkel solved this problem for him.

Hill watched the swiftly changing sky and gently flew down to the base of the mountain.

It was just the time when the Undead Tribe came to lure the Magical Beasts, and they quickly rushed over as well.

Behind them followed a line of Magical Beasts.

To the Magical Beasts of Hill Valley, it was Merkel who was the awe-inspiring figure.

Hill was merely the landlord.

However, Hill did get the rare chance to see so many feline creatures all at once.

The Undead Tribe members gazed at the various big and small cats in the trees, all of them growing restless.

Many girls’ eyes seemed to well up with water as they stood under the trees and meowed.

But isn’t it a bit too much to meow at a leopard? That leopard was almost unable to resist swatting you with its paw, my lady!

Hill used the tension of the Undead Tribe to distract from his own worries.

In some ways, Merkel was similar to him.

If his Mental Sea had been overwhelmed by ancestral inheritance during his advancement, the result, even if successful, would be a drastic change in his personality, no longer the same individual as before.

If it really was, as Merkel thought, the memories and experiences of that Demigod being passed down, Hill didn’t even want to consider how terrifying that stream of consciousness would be, requiring how strong a will from Merkel.

But Hill sincerely hoped that Merkel would succeed perfectly.

In the sky, there was no tall mountain peak that signified the advancement of an Element Lord.

Instead, there were steep cliffs with various colored boulders suspended, and uneven Earth Spikes that had appeared on the ground.

This signified that a legend of the agile Earth System was advancing.

Hill didn’t drive away the spectating Undead Tribe; he needed their chaotic noises to stabilize his emotions.

Hill keenly felt a small figure swiftly rushing over.

Alice had actually interrupted her sleep and dashed over in the middle of her advancement.

He caught Alice as she rushed towards the cave and held her tightly, ”Don’t worry, Merkel is strong. Charging over will only disturb him.”

Alice meowed a few times, eventually collapsing despondently into Hill’s arms, ”Why did he have to advance while I was asleep! I almost missed it.”

”I don’t think Merkel will be pleased when he comes out and finds that you interrupted his deep sleep for advancement,” Hill didn’t respond to her unreasonable complaints. Advancement wasn’t something Merkel could control himself.

Moreover, when Alice wakes up, she will be a legend, and Merkel certainly wouldn’t want his rank to be lower than hers.

Alice lazily pressed her head against Hill’s arm, ”It’s okay, just a bit of scolding. How could I possibly fall asleep, meow~”

Time passed, and the strange sights in the sky gradually faded away.

Hill carried Alice and slowly walked toward the entrance of the cave.

Then, the black leopard emerged from the cave, brushing past the entrance.

It had grown more than twice its original size.

Alice stared in astonishment, ”Isn’t he a leopard? Why is he growing taller?”

Merkel, with sharp ears, heard her and leapt in front of Hill in one stride, ”I’m very well, extremely well. As an Earth System magical beast, to only grow this much after becoming legendary is already a matter related to the leopard bloodline.”

Hill looked at Merkel carefully, the aura emanating from him, the aura shining around him, all told Hill that this was still Merkel, unchanged.

”Congratulations!” Hill placed Alice on Merkel’s back, ”Would you like to stay in my tower for now? It’s best for Alice to continue sleeping, and you can decide where to live after she wakes up, okay?”

After becoming a legend, Merkel no longer needed to sleep on the ground to feel the Earth’s laws; he was already very closely connected to the laws he was part of.

The relationship between magical beasts and laws has always been very close. Thus, they can easily become demigods, or even deities.

This is an entirely different path than that of mages who analyze and utilize laws.

Hill, as a magician, actually has a path very similar to that of magical beasts. So seeing Merkel’s success, Hill truly felt happy and believed that his own advancement could be just as successful.

Merkel nodded in agreement.

”I’ll be leaving in the next two days. If something comes up, look for List.” As Hill led Merkel toward the Magic Tower, he made a sign to List to postpone the appointment with the Undead Tribe by another two hours, then asked them to leave.

”You are going out again?” Merkel said curiously, ”Aren’t you afraid of bumping into trouble again? I think it’s better for you to go out after you’ve become a legend.”

”I’ve come across something that I can’t avoid.” Hill said helplessly, ”My father has passed away, and I need to leave immediately.”

”Well, then it can’t be helped,” Merkel said, ”Just take care of yourself and don’t meddle in idle affairs. I feel like whenever you get involved in anything, things tend to escalate.”

Hill remained silent. He didn’t think he was someone who stirred up trouble everywhere, but trouble seemed to have a way of finding him.

After Merkel entered the Magic Tower, he keenly glanced downward, ”Why is the Earth’s aura so strong after your Earth element lord has advanced?”

Hill smiled, ”I’ve obtained a Divine Artifact of the Earth System, likely a shield made by dwarves. It is now with the Earth Elemental, hoping to awaken the beast soul.”

”All dwarves should die!” Merkel said harshly, ”The first enemy of magical beasts is dwarves. I can sense that the World Will has shifted more towards magical beasts, the wilderness demigods are likely to emerge soon.”

”Why?” As Hill accompanied them onto the Floating Stairway, thankfully, having foreseen that the Earth element might be curious to ride it, he made the stairway quite large.

”This world has suffered a great trauma in the past,” Merkel said, ”When you become a legend, you will probably see it too. The World Will slept for a very long time. It only awoke about a hundred thousand years ago, and by that time, Its control over this world was already very weak. Isn’t the Natural Consciousness also very foolish? It woke up even later. Otherwise, how could It not know that the Nature God was murdered?

Now, it seems like the World Will has slowly regained control over the World Rules. Once It favors magical beasts, demigods won’t need to live off the chaos of the wilderness laws anymore.”

Hill felt that the Natural Consciousness was displeased but it did not deny Merkel’s words.

After sending them to Alice’s guest room, Merkel was quite satisfied with the room located below Hill’s study.

List had completely cleared out this floor, leaving only the botanical garden.

Their rooms were made with transparent crystal walls. Lying on the thick carpet, one could see the scenery outside.

Alice, drowsy, was very pleased, ”I really like it!”

Merkel dropped her onto the beautiful little bed, ”Go to sleep now! I’ll stay beside you.”

Hill did not plan to disturb them and left immediately after saying goodbye.

Hill looked up at the sky outside, the wilderness mentioned by Merkel had piqued his interest.

List approached, ”Srei is ready, currently in sailboat mode, and some from the Undead Tribe want to join you on the trip.”

Hill glanced at List, members of the Undead Tribe who had taken on the task of following up on the Earl’s news?

”I’ve changed the task to, the truth behind the Earl’s death,” List said honestly.

Hill sighed; once a task was issued, it could not be taken back, so he had to change it. He was uncertain how much secret the Undead Tribe could dig up.

How could the Countess have acted so swiftly!

Did she start her move after hooking up with Duke Saral?

Where did she find the people to carry out the deed?

Despite Hill’s complaints, he couldn’t help but laugh, ”This is the Countess who satisfied the Earl the most, what a perfect black lotus!”

”If that lady hasn’t contacted Edgar, don’t meddle,” Hill said to List as he flew toward the valley entrance, ”I think if she truly loves her son, she wouldn’t let him know what she’s doing.”

”And if she wants Edgar to do something?” List asked, ”He’s currently in Kexlote, and if he performs well, he might be able to join the City Defense Forces.”

”If she sends someone to contact Edgar, then be straightforward with him,” Hill said coldly, ”I won’t allow someone holding my letter of introduction to the Knight School to get involved in this kind of trouble. If he wishes to acknowledge his mother, then he should leave Kexlote.”

”Very well, sir,” List nodded, ”I will ask Mr. Snow Cloud Peak to have someone keep a close eye on him.”
