Caught in Affairs with Superstar

Chapter 242: Chapter 204: Ascent: 40

”Mm, I know, this matter must be very difficult for you too,” Zhou Yun sighed. ”Those attacks against you are completely groundless.”

”No, they’re not,” Song Chi suddenly said.

”Ah?” Zhou Yun was stunned, and it took her a while to come to her senses.

Song Chi spoke through the phone, ”I had known for a long time that he had a lover on the side.”

Zhou Yun was slow to respond, silent for a long moment without words.

Song Chi: ”Does that disappoint you?”

Zhou Yun couldn’t say that she was disappointed, but she did feel somewhat emotionally complex. Before this call, Zhou Yun had firmly believed that Song Chi was also kept in the dark. Those attacks by netizens were slander, just nitpicking. Who would have known? Zhou Yun didn’t even know how to react at the moment.

At this moment, she suddenly realized her own ”double standards.” When it came to Song Chi, she could not label him as an ”accomplice” in public opinion, nor could she ”hate the evil” as one would expect.

Her first reaction was: yes, even if Song Chi knew that person had kept a lover outside, it was not a big deal, Song Chi was not the one who was married and keeping a lover.

Humans are indeed strange creatures; some principles that one thought would never waver, when applied to a few special people, become like steel sinking into magma, burning into ash.

”He must be a senior you greatly respect, right?” Zhou Yun asked.

”Yes,” Song Chi admitted.

Zhou Yun: ”Then it’s fine.”

Song Chi was surprised and laughed, ”What do you mean by ’then it’s fine’?”

”Only saints are without moral failings. It’s not you who is keeping a lover outside. If it was you, that would be a different matter,” Zhou Yun said.

Song Chi laughed for quite a while on the other end before saying, ”Thank you.”

”Please,” Zhou Yun didn’t know what else to say.

Both of them were silent for a while. Song Chi said, ”This matter, actually, is no secret. His wife has known about it for a long time.”

Zhou Yun asked in surprise, ”His wife knew about it all along? Then, then why...”

”Do you want to ask why she hasn’t left him?”

”Mm,” Zhou Yun said, ”I thought she was kept in the dark all along.”

”This matter is somewhat complicated, it’s not good for me to tell you in detail, I’ll be at his home this afternoon,” said Song Chi. ”Don’t worry about me on your end, you must be quite busy these days, right?”

Zhou Yun said, ”Busy is true, but not that busy, not to the point where I don’t have time for a phone call.”

Song Chi said, ”My company received a script, it’s very good, but it’s a film script from a female perspective, and I can’t act in it. I’ll send it to you in a bit, if you’re interested, my company will produce the movie and you can star in it.”

”Song Chi, have you gone mad?” Zhou Yun cried out in astonishment, ”I have never acted in a film, aren’t you afraid of making a loss?”

”No, the script quality is really good, I believe you can perform well,” Song Chi said with a laugh. ”I also don’t know why this script was sent to my production company.”

Zhou Yun was of course happy, but she was afraid of messing it up and affecting Song Chi.

”You don’t need to worry too much. I’m not a nouveau riche who can laugh off large sums of money. You are a hot actress right now, many production companies want you to act in their plays, I’m getting a bargain if you’re willing to act.”

”But a script that you find promising, basically wouldn’t make it to me,” Zhou Yun said. ”Production companies wouldn’t be so confident to entrust a good script for me to perform.”

Song Chi: ”Then perform well and make a name for yourself so that they will never underestimate you again.”

”Song Chi, thank you.”

”Let’s not be so polite between us, okay?” Someone was calling Song Chi’s name from his end, he said, ”Someone’s looking for me, I have to hang up first.”

”Mm, bye.”

-

The merciless verbal and written assaults on Song Chi seemed unstoppable in the short term.

More and more people joined in.

However, there were quite a few rational people expressing their own opinions. Surprisingly, these statements, which were not necessarily in support of Song Chi, were mistaken by many as taking sides with Song Chi. They were treated like the enemy and attacked harshly.

In such an atmosphere, Zhou Yun could not adjust and could only reduce her time browsing the internet.

After an event, Zhou Lan told Zhou Yun that the fashion magazine ”Victor” had sent her an invitation for the ”New Style” event.

”The chief editor of ’Victor’, Chen Ting, has stepped down, and there’s a new editor-in-chief. This ’New Style’ event is this new editor-in-chief’s idea,” Zhou Lan smiled. ”A new official does like to make an immediate mark.”

Zhou Yun asked, ”What’s the background of this new editor-in-chief?”

”Named Ren Sumin, a Chinese American.”

”Oh.”

”Don’t just ’oh’ me, first tell me, do you want to go?” Zhou Lan inquired.

”Aren’t these kind of things usually decided by you? Why are you asking me?” Zhou Yun retorted.

”For normal events, I make the decision for you, but this one... well, it’s a bit special, right? You had a good relationship with Chen Ting, and I’m not sure if you would mind Ren Sumin.”

”It’s not something I can mind, Victor is such a big fashion group, could I just ignore them because they ousted Chief Editor Chen?” Zhou Yun’s tone actually revealed her answer.

”Don’t force yourself, if you don’t want to go this time, I’ll coordinate, it’s no problem,” Zhou Lan said.

”Will Song Chi be going?” Zhou Yun asked.

Zhou Lan shook his head, ”No.”

Zhou Yun nodded, ”He was closer to Chief Editor Chen, he definitely wouldn’t go. If I didn’t know the reason for Chief Editor Chen’s resignation, I might let it pass, but knowing that she was pushed out because she refused to use those anti-China, discriminatory foreign artists, if possible... I really don’t want to go, at least not to this event, this nonsense ’New Style’ celebrating a new editor-in-chief.”

”Mm, I’ll go decline them, I’ll just say you have a schedule conflict and can’t make time,” Zhou Lan said.

Zhou Yun nodded in agreement.

”However, Xiao Yun, like you just said, we can’t always make a clear distinction with Victor. As long as it has a place in the fashion industry, we can’t sever ties with them completely, you have to be clear on that.”

”Mm.”

Suddenly, Zhou Lan’s phone rang.

”A strange number? Could it be another sales call?” Zhou Lan muttered and picked up the phone.

”Hello, may I ask who is speaking?”

Zhou Yun was already pulling out her earphones, preparing to put them on.

Suddenly, she heard Zhou Lan speaking in a surprised voice, ”Editor-in-Chief Ren? Oh, hello, hello, yes, I’m Zhou Lan.”

Zhou Yun looked up in astonishment at Zhou Lan.

Editor-in-Chief Ren. Which Editor-in-Chief Ren? From her life experience, she had only heard of one Editor-in-Chief Ren, and that was the one she had just been told about a minute ago.

Ren Sumin, the one who replaced Chen Ting as the new editor-in-chief of ”Victor.”
