Chapter 191: Chapter 173: The Surgical Video Went Viral

Zhang Heng clearly hadn’t expected Wu Ting to take him so literally. ’I was just being polite, and he actually took it seriously?’

’Besides, did I really have that many problems?’

But in this situation, he was in too deep to back out. Zhang Heng could only pretend to listen humbly and look for a chance to explain himself later.

”Second, the embolic agent should be injected under fluoroscopy. It should be pushed slowly by hand, and the injection pressure needs to be controlled very gently. Director Zhang, in your recent operation, your control of the force wasn’t optimal. High pressure can easily cause the embolic agent to reflux, leading to an ectopic embolism... The technique for this is...”

Zhang Heng had wanted to argue, but upon hearing it, he realized it was true.

”Interesting.”

Without realizing it, Zhang Heng actually started taking notes. A surgeon at his level had already hit a bottleneck. He hadn’t noticed it before, but now that a master on another level was pointing it out, his minor surgical flaws were suddenly being resolved.

Although Zhang Heng lost some face, he still felt it was well worth it.

At that moment, he felt that Wu Ting could actually say even more. He had no doubt that after internalizing Wu Ting’s pointers, his skill in this particular surgery would reach a new breakthrough.

”Dr. Wu, continue!”

Zhang Heng’s eyes lit up.

Guo Guoguo, standing to the side, looked at Director Zhang with some surprise. ’Given Director Zhang’s pride, it seems Dr. Wu really hit a nerve.’

Wu Ting continued his commentary at length:

”For the intraoperative angiography, there’s actually a better choice of contrast agent. The team at Haijin Port uses a new non-ionic contrast agent that can reduce damage to liver function...”

Listening to Wu Ting’s meticulous explanation, Zhang Heng jotted it down again.

He had come to City First Hospital from the Provincial Tumor Hospital under immense pressure. His former colleagues thought he was just wasting his time and throwing away his career.

At this moment, Zhang Heng felt that coming here was worth it; he had learned so much from Wu Ting alone. This time, when he went back to the Provincial Tumor Hospital, he planned to perform this surgery again to show those colleagues of his how much his skills had advanced by leaps and bounds in such a short time.

Zhang Heng was very talented. With Wu Ting’s pointers, he had an epiphany, and all his previously deficient techniques were now optimized.

By the time Wu Ting finished giving his opinions, Zhang Heng had unconsciously filled three full pages in his small notebook.

Seeing Wu Ting’s expert demeanor and Director Zhang listening so intently, occasionally slapping the table in admiration, the other junior doctors were also amazed.

Even Qin Donglai and Lu Xuejun were surprised. They never expected the typically domineering and arrogant Director Zhang to be so humbled before Wu Ting.

Sure enough, in the City First Hospital Research Center, Wu Ting was the real big shot.

Cheng Feng’s eyes shone even brighter. This time, he was definitely going to brag to everyone about Brother Ting.

Even the associate director recruited from Jin Province Tumor Hospital was completely convinced.

In the end, Zhang Heng and Guo Guoguo thanked Wu Ting respectfully once more before the surgical exchange event concluded.

[Ding! Congratulations, Host, for conducting an academic exchange with Zhang Heng and earning the adoration of City First Hospital. You have obtained the entry from Zhang Heng: EST (Yellow). EST, or Endoscopic Sphincterotomy, is a procedure developed on the basis of ERCP.]

[It is a minimally invasive surgery that uses a special sphincterotome to incise the sphincter of the duodenal papilla, for the purpose of removing gallstones or roundworms, draining the biliary tract, etc. EST is a brand-new therapeutic function of the electronic duodenoscope, and its range of applications and indications is constantly expanding.]

[This surgery can clear foreign bodies from the extrahepatic bile duct and can be used to treat the following conditions: biliary stones, biliary ascariasis, necrotic tumor thrombi in the bile duct, intraductal mucus (mucinous neoplasms), cast-like bile plugs after Liver Transplantation, and blind loop syndrome after bilioenteric bypass.]

Looking at this entry, Wu Ting was thrilled. This was a brand-new, cutting-edge technology, a new Surgical Technique that the research center desperately needed.

Wu Ting also expressed his thanks to Zhang Heng:

”You’re too kind, Director Zhang. I also learned a great deal from today’s surgery. Thank you, thank you.”

Wu Ting was being completely sincere.

This, in turn, made Zhang Heng blush a little. ’With my level of skill, how could I possibly have taught Wu Ting anything?’

’This Dr. Wu is truly modest and polite.’

Zhang Heng was utterly convinced by Wu Ting’s abilities.

Fortunately, though, Zhang Heng could perform many other surgical techniques in hepatobiliary surgery.

Besides his own research project, he also had ERCP and the EST technique developed from it. Originally, Zhang Heng hadn’t planned to reveal them so soon.

’It seems that in addition to advancing my research project, I’ll have to bring out EST to let the doctors at City First Hospital know that Director Zhang still has plenty of gas in the tank.’

’Wu Ting’s strength is in his specialization, but my, Zhang Heng’s, strength is in my versatility!’

After returning to his office, Zhang Heng contacted his old director. He planned to make a trip back to the Provincial Tumor Hospital in a few days for some surgical exchange and study.

”This time, I’ll let you all see the results of my upgrade from the exchange at City First Hospital Research Center!”

Besides this, Zhang Heng also posted the surgical video of Wu Ting’s earlier emergency treatment for a traumatic liver rupture to his account on a medical forum.

Zhang Heng was a very active member on this forum, a big shot who cultivated an impressive image and often shared various surgeries and opinions.

On the forum, Zhang Heng was also an idol to many rookie doctors.

After all, in his series of posts, Zhang Heng had shown off quite a few awards, and everything he wrote painted the picture of a top-tier elite doctor.

But this time, for the video of Wu Ting’s surgery, he intentionally left the operator’s identity vague.

He just made a post, full of his usual flair, about an emergency treatment for traumatic liver rupture performed by a young doctor in his department. At the same time, he added a lot of text, glossing over the important details and highlighting how he, as a senior doctor, took over the remaining procedures that the young doctor couldn’t handle.

In short, the message was that this junior doctor’s performance was incredible.

’And I, as the second-line doctor who cleaned up after him... you get the picture, right?’

Sure enough, as soon as the post went up, it blew up.

Many senior doctors downloaded it to study, because the entire procedure was simply too astonishing, too shocking.

Seeing so many saves, comments, and shares, Zhang Heng felt a swell of pride.

He had finally gotten a little of his own back from Wu Ting. After all, having so many of his shortcomings pointed out by Wu Ting today was, upon reflection, still a bit depressing.

But then again, thinking about the chance to show off in front of his old colleagues and director, Director Zhang felt it was worth it.

”Wu Ting, I refuse to believe I’ll lose to you in ERCP and EST as well. I will get my pride back.”

Zhang Heng had already made up his mind. Next time, he would give Wu Ting nine suggestions for improvement. No, ten!

...

...

「Another week passed.」

It was time for Wu Ting to go to Haijin Port Hospital for his advanced studies again.

After arriving at Haijin Port, Wu Ting immediately went to find his mentor, Professor Shen Siyuan.

Their relationship had grown closer now. It wasn’t working hours yet, so Director Shen hadn’t changed into her white coat.

It was only then that Wu Ting discovered Teacher Shen was a woman of... ”great assets”!

A teacher with a good figure and beautiful looks really could motivate a student to study harder.

For a vigorous young man, looking at his mature teacher, every little expression held a special kind of charm.

No wonder they said Teacher Shen used to be the belle of Jiuhua Hospital.

Wu Ting chatted with Director Shen for a while before getting to the purpose of his visit:

”Teacher Shen, after my recent studies and exchanges with Director Fu, I still feel that the intersection of Hepatitis B-related primary liver cancer and immunology is an excellent research topic.”

”I’ve also been studying some theories on immunomodulation recently, and I think it has great potential.”

After all, Wu Ting had already obtained Shen Siyuan’s ”Immunomodulation Theory” entry, so he revealed a little of what he knew.

”Teacher Shen, through my recent research on Hepatitis B-related primary liver cancer, I’ve found that the postoperative reactivation of the hepatitis B virus in patients is often the cause of recurrence and the inability to achieve a complete cure...”

”And, on a deeper level, the reason for decreased liver function is postoperative bleeding, ischemia-reperfusion injury caused by blood flow obstruction, and organ damage from physical resection. All of these lead to a decline in the body’s immunity...”

”According to your theory of immunomodulation, Teacher Shen, if we could propose a new method to modulate the immune capacity of patients after surgery for Hepatitis B-related liver cancer, we could, to some extent, inhibit the reactivation of the hepatitis B virus...”

”After all, the pathogenic mechanism of the hepatitis B virus is closely related to immune cells... Based on your related papers and research findings, I’m going to make a bold guess that it might be related to immunoglobulins...”

”Although I don’t know the specific relationship yet, this is my preliminary hypothesis...”

’By reverse-engineering from the entry he hadn’t yet obtained, Wu Ting figured his guess should be more or less on the mark.’

After hearing Wu Ting’s analysis, Shen Siyuan began to re-evaluate him.

This student of hers wasn’t just some rash young man acting on a whim; he had genuinely studied both Hepatitis B-related primary liver cancer and her own immunomodulation theory.

Especially concerning some of the sub-fields, minor topics, and some of Director Shen’s own original theoretical findings. Shen Siyuan was astonished by Wu Ting’s learning ability, his focus, and his drive!

”Wu Ting, although my ability to help you on this interdisciplinary project is limited, your persistence and the effort you’ve put in recently have shown me that it’s a possibility.”

”Wu Ting, although I still don’t fully recommend you pursue this line of research, I am willing to help you delve deeper.”

”How about this: when I get back, I’ll compile a list for you of experts in the field of immunoglobulins, along with their research sub-specializations, and send it to you.”

”Then, you can look into their publications and papers. Once you have a direction, tell me, and I’ll make an introduction for you.”

”As long as you can ask genuinely good questions, I can arrange for an expert to have a long talk with you.”

”In the field of immunology, your grand-teacher and I still have some clout. We have at least that much influence.”

Wu Ting’s eyes lit up. ’It worked.’

’In truth, I already have a specific direction in mind, but I can wait a bit longer. I should let her see that I’ve really been putting in the work.’
