Doctor: I Can Synthesize Infinite Entries

Chapter 161: Chapter 149: I Want You

[Ding! Congratulations, Host. Through your slick move, you have successfully bluffed Professor Shen Siyuan and won the favor of her team members. You have obtained an Entry from Attending Physician Huang Dian: Theoretical Research on Cardiomyopathy (Yellow)—all of Huang Dian’s theoretical knowledge from his research into cardiomyopathy.]

[You have obtained an Entry from a female team member: Theoretical Research on Coronary Artery Disease (Yellow)—all of her theoretical knowledge on coronary artery disease.]

[Recommended Entry Synthesis: Theoretical Research on Cardiomyopathy (Yellow) + Theoretical Research on Coronary Artery Disease (Yellow) + Clinical ECG Diagnostic Skills (Yellow) = Clinical ECG Diagnostic Skills for Special Cardiac Diseases (Purple). This Entry specializes in the clinical ECG diagnosis of coronary artery disease and cardiomyopathy, enabling the user to identify ECG characteristics of special cases that even cardiac surgery experts might overlook.]

[Do you wish to synthesize, Host?]

Shen Siyuan was a cardiac surgeon. Since Wu Ting would definitely have to work and interact with doctors from her department in the future, he completed the synthesis without a moment’s hesitation.

A massive influx of information flooded his mind. Just like that, Wu Ting now had a specialty within the field of cardiac surgery. He was no longer a complete novice.

While Wu Ting was absorbing his new Entry, everyone in the lab began to recover from their shock.

This time, Shen Siyuan’s gaze on Wu Ting was filled with curiosity and a newfound appreciation.

”Good memory, and your foreign language skills are okay, too. Hmm, not bad.”

Shen Siyuan’s assessment left her team members in disbelief. ’Is this really the strict Professor Shen?’ It was the first time they had ever seen her praise a young doctor so openly.

”Wu Ting, your basic qualifications are up to par.”

”However, when Shen Guofeng recommended you, he said you were a fast learner with outstanding clinical skills and diagnostic abilities. My research, however, is in an interdisciplinary field combining cardiac surgery and immunology, and my projects are focused in that direction.”

”Your experience so far has mainly been in the emergency department, hepatobiliary surgery, and general surgery. Have you had any exposure to cardiac surgery?”

Professor Shen’s tone had softened considerably. She asked a series of questions, clearly wanting to get a complete picture of Wu Ting.

Her team members watched quietly, wondering how Wu Ting would respond.

”Professor Shen, I have dabbled in cardiac surgery. I’ve read some papers and studied articles on cardiomyopathy and coronary artery disease. And during my time in the emergency department, I also learned ECG diagnostic techniques.”

”As for my connection to the field, I’d say I have a bit of a knack for ECG diagnosis of cardiac conditions like coronary artery disease and cardiomyopathy.”

Wu Ting hadn’t expected Professor Shen to bring this up right after he’d acquired the Purple Entry. ’Well, since she walked right into it, I might as well give her another unforgettable demonstration.’

”ECG diagnosis, you say?”

Seeing the calm and composed Wu Ting, Professor Shen’s interest was piqued. She didn’t particularly care about ECG diagnosis itself; what she valued was Wu Ting’s capacity for broad, cross-departmental learning and his ability to integrate different specialties.

Her own research was interdisciplinary, and a more comprehensive, generalized approach to learning was often the key to making breakthroughs.

After all, Professor Shen’s research was on cutting-edge theories with few precedents, requiring a great deal of independent exploration.

”Then let’s put your ECG diagnostic skills to the test.”

Without wasting any more words, Professor Shen directly called the department’s second-in-command, Director Shao Yuqiao.

”Director Shao, I have a prospective postgraduate student here for an interview. He claims to have some expertise in ECG diagnosis, and I’d like to test him. Could you pick out a few ECG case files from your side and bring them over for him to take a look at?”

”I’m not an expert on ECGs myself, so maybe you should come over too.”

In the department, everyone doted on Professor Shen.

Shao Yuqiao agreed immediately, without a moment’s hesitation.

Shao Yuqiao was also quite curious about any student who dared to interview for a spot in Shen Siyuan’s research group.

’For Shen Siyuan to call me for help with an evaluation, this student must have good comprehensive skills. Otherwise, she would have rejected him after a simple chat. She wouldn’t have bothered me.’

Shao Yuqiao gave instructions to one of his doctoral students.

The student quickly gathered a few ECGs. Since time was short, he just picked some recent cases. In his haste, he also included an ECG from a diagnosis made just that morning.

The doctoral student put the seven ECGs together and handed them to Shao Yuqiao.

Holding the ECGs, Shao Yuqiao hurried over to Shen Siyuan’s lab.

”For Professor Shen to go to the trouble of testing you, this young doctor must have some real skill, huh?”

The moment Shao Yuqiao stepped inside, his booming voice filled the lab. He looked at Wu Ting with great curiosity.

’Bright and handsome, confident and composed... he’s got a bit of the flair I had when I was young.’

’With looks like that, he and Shen Siyuan—the former number one goddess of Union—would actually make a perfect pair. They have a real Little Dragon Girl and Yang Guo vibe.’

Even with her eccentric temper all these years, Shen Siyuan was still doted on by the department and tolerated by all. Her stunning looks were, of course, a big part of it. Even at thirty-nine, she was a timeless beauty, and the years had only added a different kind of charm.

If she hadn’t married so young, Shao Yuqiao might have even tried his luck.

Shao Yuqiao was about to make another teasing remark when he caught Shen Siyuan’s impatient glare and quickly handed the stack of ECGs to Wu Ting.

”Alright, young doctor, take a look. I’ll be the judge.”

Shao Yuqiao took out his phone and started a timer.

Wu Ting took the ECGs and began to examine them one by one. Empowered by the Purple Entry, it was, of course, effortless.

”This one shows mitral regurgitation... myocardial ischemia... indicative of heart failure...”

”This one is a left ventricular outflow tract obstruction... with early closure of the aortic valve during mid-systole...”

...

Quickly and accurately, Wu Ting finished diagnosing the first six ECGs.

And his diagnoses were identical to those made by Director Shao’s own team.

”He’s got some serious skills,” Shao Yuqiao murmured.

Shao Yuqiao hadn’t expected the young doctor to be so proficient in ECG diagnosis.

Even his own postdoctoral fellows couldn’t read the films that fast. If he hadn’t known this test was impromptu and the cases were chosen at random, he would have suspected Wu Ting had prepared in advance.

Everyone saw Director Shao’s reaction and was equally impressed. This Wu Ting wasn’t just bragging; he truly had a profound grasp of ECG diagnosis.

”Are ER doctors all this incredible and well-rounded these days?”

The members of Professor Shen’s team were in disbelief.

At this point, Shen Siyuan was completely convinced that Wu Ting was a rare talent.

’Foreign language skills can be trained, but a photographic memory is pure talent. And the habit of studying papers and journals from various fields and departments... that comes down to personal discipline.’

’If he can achieve this level of cross-departmental ECG diagnostic skill through self-study, I have no doubt about his ability to conduct research in a completely new field.’

Besides, according to the information Shen Guofeng had bombarded her with—so much information, in fact, that she’d almost reported him for harassment—Wu Ting also had extensive research experience, a proven ability to lead a team, and a track record of producing results.

Shen Siyuan was thoroughly pleased with Wu Ting.

’If this interview were scored out of a hundred, I’d give him a perfect score.’

’I’m definitely taking him on as my student.’

Just as everyone was waiting for Wu Ting to diagnose the final ECG and conclude what seemed to be a foregone conclusion of an assessment,

something unexpected happened.

”This one,” Wu Ting began, ”is apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a specific type of primary cardiomyopathy. It accounts for about 1.68% of all hypertrophic cardiomyopathies.”

”The pathophysiological mechanisms of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy include mitral regurgitation, myocardial ischemia, left ventricular hyperkinesis, and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction...”

”The incidence rate in young people is 0.2%, and most cases are asymptomatic. It is very easily misdiagnosed as coronary artery disease or a mild myocardial infarction.”

”This patient’s ECG, in particular, isn’t very pronounced and lacks specific markers. If it’s misdiagnosed and mistreated, or if it isn’t taken seriously enough, the optimal treatment window could be missed.”

”If the patient also dismisses it and isn’t careful, when symptoms do present, it can easily lead to sudden death, dyspnea, poor exercise tolerance, or heart failure...”

Listening to Wu Ting’s analysis, Shao Yuqiao grew puzzled.

’When did our department ever have a case of such a rare cardiomyopathy?’

”Are you sure you’re talking about the ECG I gave you? Hand it here, let me see.”

As Shao Yuqiao took the ECG from Wu Ting, he suddenly remembered.

”Isn’t this the patient who was diagnosed and discharged this morning? How did this ECG get mixed in with the others?” he muttered.

The initial diagnosis from the attending doctor had been coronary artery disease, and the patient was treated for a mild case.

Given the timing, the patient had probably just picked up their prescription and hadn’t even left Haijin Port Hospital yet.

Hearing Wu Ting’s analysis, Shao Yuqiao would have normally just laughed it off. But after witnessing his performance on the first six ECGs, he knew Wu Ting’s diagnostic abilities were profound.

’Could it be that our department’s doctor actually made the wrong call?’

As the department’s second-in-command, he didn’t personally handle routine outpatient cases. Only when there were difficult or complex cases would the junior doctors submit the files to him for final review.

Shao Yuqiao examined it carefully. The ECG indeed lacked any specific indicators, and the condition Wu Ting described was exceedingly rare.

For a moment, Shao Yuqiao found himself unable to make a definitive judgment.

This specific type of apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was highly atypical, and most doctors wouldn’t study the characteristics of such an obscure, niche disease.

From his earlier conversation with the lab members, he knew about Wu Ting’s photographic memory and his habit of reading a wide range of academic literature and journals.

This made it easier to understand how Wu Ting could have made such a diagnosis.

’Rare and complex cases are often the subject of research papers. Wu Ting must have read an article about this, and with his photographic memory, he remembered the details of this rare condition.’

’Encountering this patient’s case must have jogged his memory of that paper, leading him to a conclusion no ordinary doctor would reach.’

’But how reliable could such a coincidental, almost accidental, diagnosis be?’

Following conventional diagnostic methods and based on this ECG alone, Shao Yuqiao would also have leaned toward a diagnosis of coronary artery disease.

Just then, his phone rang. It was the doctor on duty in their department.

”Director Shao, there’s a situation with the coronary artery disease patient from this morning. He’s having trouble breathing, feels extremely weak and unwell, and just came back to the clinic... Dr. Ying would like you to come take a look!”

Shao Yuqiao shot Wu Ting a look of disbelief. ’Could it really be apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?’

”Alright, I’m on my way.”

Not daring to take this lightly, Shao Yuqiao started walking, then glanced at Wu Ting.

”Dr. Wu, you seem to know a lot about this rare apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. You were in the ER before, right? Would you mind coming with me? Thank you.”

At this point, Shao Yuqiao couldn’t afford to be arrogant and extended a very serious invitation to Wu Ting.

Shen Siyuan and the others never imagined that a postgraduate interview would suddenly turn into a real-life consultation, with Wu Ting assisting Director Shao in treating a patient!

”Wu Ting, go with Director Shao, quickly!”

”You’re in. I’m accepting you!”

Shen Siyuan declared decisively.

Wu Ting was overjoyed. He immediately followed Director Shao, rushing toward the cardiac surgery clinic.
