Doctor: I Can Synthesize Infinite Entries

Chapter 162: Chapter 150: I Recommended You for an Interview, and You Conquered the Department of Cardiac Surgery?

As Director Shao walked, he called Shen Guofeng, the director of the Emergency Department. After all, the situation Wu Ting had reported was critical. If it truly was an attack of this rare cardiomyopathy, the patient would need immediate emergency treatment.

Shen Guofeng took this very seriously as well. Before long, just as Director Shao and Wu Ting reached the outpatient clinic, Shen Guofeng arrived too.

”Wu Ting, what are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be interviewing with Shen Siyuan?”

Director Shao was surprised at how well Shen Guofeng and Wu Ting knew each other. He explained,

”Shen Siyuan had me help her prepare the interview questions. I never expected Dr. Wu here to spot a problem with a patient’s diagnosis.”

Director Shao handed the ECG to Shen Guofeng. After briefly explaining the situation, Shen Guofeng was astounded. Wu Ting was just here for an interview, and he’d already managed to teach a lesson to the Director of Cardiac Surgery.

”You’re incredible!”

Shen Guofeng, thoroughly impressed, gave Wu Ting a thumbs-up.

Only then did they examine the patient together. The patient was still experiencing chest tightness and difficulty breathing.

With Shen Guofeng on the scene, Wu Ting relaxed and stepped aside.

”Based on the patient’s current condition, Wu Ting’s assessment is very likely correct. Let’s do this: send him to the emergency room immediately for a cardiac ultrasound... Then, run another ECG at the same time. Get a 12-lead ECG, record the precordial leads in detail, and measure vertically from the upper edge of the baseline to the peak of the wave...”

”The patient most likely has latent cardiomyopathy with left ventricular outflow tract obstruction...”

As a frontline doctor in the Emergency Department, Shen Guofeng had encountered far more strange and varied cases than the relatively straightforward ones seen in cardiac surgery.

He had encountered a few emergency patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and had some experience in managing them. Of course, he wouldn’t dare make a final diagnosis before the results from the cardiac ultrasound and the new ECG came in.

For now, they could only provide symptomatic treatment, focusing on relieving the dyspnea and resolving the atrial fibrillation.

Watching Professor Shen and Director Shao rush the patient off for treatment, Dr. Ying, the physician who had seen him first, finally let out a long sigh of relief.

”Differences in Clinical Diagnosis and Presentation Between Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and Coronary Artery Disease?”

Dr. Ying went to a medical forum he frequented, posted about the situation he had just encountered, and promised to provide follow-up updates.

”After my department director and the director of the Emergency Department finalize the diagnosis and treatment, I will provide an immediate update. I also welcome my colleagues here to share their thoughts.”

”I was honestly panicking at the time... I could use some reassurance.”

Dr. Ying also posted the patient’s anonymized information.

On the forum, many medical students and senior physicians of various ages clearly saw the post, quickly propelling it to the top of the ”hot” list.

However, among the replies, it was clear very few people could distinguish between the two conditions. The patient’s initial ECG had shown no specific abnormalities, and the test results were inconclusive, making a clinical diagnosis extremely difficult.

Back in the Emergency Department, Director Sha Zhou from the Ultrasound Department also came over to assist with the consultation.

The cardiac ultrasound and the second ECG finally gave the directors a clue, especially since the patient was in the midst of an episode.

Once the diagnosis was confirmed, the subsequent treatment plan became relatively straightforward.

Director Sha was also deeply impressed by Wu Ting:

”Dr. Wu, I never expected you to be so seasoned in ECG diagnostics. I’m impressed, truly.”

Seeing Sha Zhou’s reaction, Shao Yuqiao was in disbelief.

”Director Sha, you know Wu Ting, too? Isn’t he just here for the entrance exam for Professor Shen Siyuan’s postgraduate program?”

Sha Zhou laughed.

”Dr. Wu is amazing. His real specialty is hepatobiliary surgery. I just had no idea he was so brilliant at reading ECGs, too.”

Shen Guofeng nodded silently in agreement.

”If Wu Ting hadn’t set his sights on Shen Siyuan and her postgraduate program, countless other top directors would be fighting to recruit him.”

”I’m at a disadvantage myself since I’m not currently recruiting postgraduates. Professor Ma Mengchao from Jiuhua Hospital tried to get him to become a grand-disciple to Scholar Zeng Jiu, and he still refused.”

”Professor Jin Yu from Saint An Hospital, Professor Liang Ang from Lin Province Pinfan Hospital, and even Dean Liu Rong from Qinghe City Jin Country General Hospital have all extended olive branches to Wu Ting. It’s just a shame the kid is as stubborn as a mule; he’s got his heart set on Shen Siyuan.”

”And to think Shen Siyuan still wanted to test him. Well, I bet she’s satisfied now.”

He was secretly delighted. ’That woman, Shen Siyuan, was completely won over by Wu Ting.’

”Wu Ting,” he said, ”you did good. You didn’t embarrass me.”

After all, Wu Ting was the person he had recommended. Seeing him pass the interview so spectacularly made Shen Guofeng feel proud.

”So that’s how it is,” Shao Yuqiao said. ”It seems our Department of Cardiac Surgery has really recruited a young prodigy.”

This time, Shao Yuqiao spoke with a serious tone.

”Dr. Wu, since you’re now a student of Director Shen, that makes you one of our own in Cardiac Surgery. Our department head, Director Hu, is rarely here, so I’m the one who calls the shots on all clinical matters. Since you have such a remarkable clinical talent, you should come to the operating room more often. I’ll take you under my wing personally.”

Director Shao understood exactly what Shen Guofeng was doing by singing Wu Ting’s praises like this.

Besides, Wu Ting’s performance had already completely earned his trust and admiration.

”Thank you so much, Director Shao.”

”Directors, since the patient’s condition has been diagnosed and he is now stable, I’ll be taking my leave.”

”The experts from Haijin Port’s hepatobiliary surgery department are here at City First Hospital for a week-long exchange. Now that things are settled here, I should get back and see what I can learn.”

The directors were impressed. Even after all this, Wu Ting wasn’t arrogant or conceited; his mind was still focused on going back to learn.

”Alright, Wu Ting,” Shao Yuqiao said. ”Let me know the next time you’re coming. If a suitable opportunity comes up, you’ll join me in the cardiac surgery operating room.”

Seeing a diamond in the rough like Wu Ting, a top-tier clinical surgeon like Shao Yuqiao had the exact same thought as Shen Guofeng.

’A clinical genius like this would be wasted if he only focused on following Shen Siyuan.’

With Professor Shen Siyuan’s approval, all that remained was to complete the paperwork. After the matriculation ceremony for the incoming class of postgraduates, his classes would officially begin.

Wu Ting was a professional postgraduate student, so his schedule wasn’t as rigid. He only had to show up when required, and could spend the rest of his time at the Fan City First Medical Research Center.

...

...

It was only noon when Wu Ting returned to City First Hospital.

Wu Ting timed his arrival at the hospital cafeteria perfectly for lunch. He saw a few unfamiliar faces that he guessed must be the visiting team of experts from Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital.

Dr. Yan Xi, serving as the liaison, was responsible for hosting these experts from Haijin Port.

”Wu Ting, over here!”

The team from City First Hospital’s Emergency Department was sitting together. Qin Donglai called out to Wu Ting.

Yasui, Luo Ming, and Cheng Feng were all gathered around Qin Donglai.

Wu Ting smiled and nodded at Yan Xi before walking over to the seat opposite Qin Donglai.

Yasui tactfully scooted over, making room for Director Qin’s top surgeon.

Cheng Feng was not to be outdone.

Qin Donglai asked with concern, ”How’d it go? Did it go smoothly?”

Everyone knew today was the day of Wu Ting’s postgraduate interview.

”Of course. I won over Professor Shen Siyuan with ease, and I managed to win over the second-in-command of Cardiac Surgery, Director Shao Yuqiao, while I was at it.”

Wu Ting stated it plainly.

”Amazing! That’s Brother Ting for you!”

His number one fanboy, Cheng Feng, lavished him with praise while bringing over a plate of food, his service second to none.

The others had mostly finished their meals, but they all remained seated, waiting patiently for Wu Ting to eat.

As the newly promoted deputy director of the Emergency Department, with Jiang Ming away for advanced training and Director Huo rarely present, Qin Donglai was effectively in charge. Yet, in front of Wu Ting, he remained patient and considerate, not rushing him in the slightest as he waited quietly.

”I don’t recognize the people at Dr. Yan Xi’s table,” Wu Ting asked while eating. ”Are those the visiting experts from Haijin Port?”

”That’s right, from Haijin Port,” Qin Donglai replied. ”The one leading them is Wang Nanjin, an elite attending physician from their hepatobiliary surgery department.”

”The focus of their visit to our research center is the ERCP technique, which we urgently need to implement. Dr. Wang demonstrated a procedure for us this morning, and it was absolutely textbook. He’s truly the ace young doctor from Haijin Port.”

”Dr. Wang is a high-level talent recruited by the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department of Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital. He’s a brilliant mind who has also secured a youth research grant.”

”While he was still a PhD candidate, he published an SCI paper, won a Second-Class Award for Scientific and Technological Progress from Qinghe City, and holds two invention patents. He even sold one of those patents to a pharmaceutical company. He’d already earned his first ten million before he even graduated!”

Even Qin Donglai was full of admiration when he spoke of Wang Nanjin.

In terms of academic qualifications, background, achievements, and institutional platform, Wang Nanjin was so dazzling that even the current Wu Ting paled in comparison.

”Inviting Dr. Wang was a deliberate choice, discussed and decided upon by Director Huo Yun and Director Shen Xiaofei.”

Now that Qin Donglai was a deputy director, his perspective had broadened.

”Director Huo and Director Shen’s decision to bring in Dr. Wang is actually a win-win.”

”Director Huo hopes that after this week, our research center can master the ERCP technique quickly. By fostering a good relationship with Dr. Wang through this collaboration, we can get timely technical support when we start implementing it ourselves.”

”Of course, it’s also a great opportunity for Dr. Wang’s team. Even for an elite surgeon like him at the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department of Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital, patient resources are limited. It’s especially difficult for him to accumulate the specific cases he needs for his advanced research on ERCP.”

”After all, in the hepatobiliary surgery world at Haijin Port, anyone who makes it to director or deputy director is a top gun. Competition is fierce, and the lion’s share of patients goes to the senior-most surgeons. Dr. Wang’s resume is brilliant, but it’s mostly academic achievements. In the department, his seniority is still relatively low. Director Shen Xiaofei has to balance everyone’s interests, so he figured he might as well let Dr. Wang use this opportunity to do an exchange at our research center.”

”Ostensibly, it’s a ’technology transfer’ to help us out. In reality, he’s here to leverage our research center’s patient pool. Here, he’ll have free rein to accumulate a large number of clinical cases.”

”Lately, I’ve really started to understand the true purpose of this expert exchange week.”

”The top-tier hospitals have plenty of masters, but all the resources are concentrated in the hands of the directors and deputy directors. So, our research center has naturally become a training ground for their up-and-coming elites, a place where they can get tons of surgical opportunities. Since our own doctors lack the technical skill, we can assist these experts, observe their surgeries, and listen to their advice. It’s a decent symbiotic relationship, I suppose.”

”It’s just... if this keeps up, we’ll only ever get these second-tier young doctors visiting for ’exchanges’...”

Qin Donglai sighed. He couldn’t help but feel a little bitter.

But the reality was that even these ”second-tier” doctors were more than enough to completely outclass them and were perfectly qualified to teach the staff at City First Hospital.

Take these second-tier doctors led by Wang Nanjin, for example. On the surface, they were polite, but they couldn’t hide the sense of superiority in their every action, the way they looked down their noses at everyone.

It was frustrating, but it was their own team’s fault for not being strong enough. They didn’t have the reputation to attract the real top-tier experts and professors for these exchanges.

Qin Donglai was the backbone of the ER now, a senior frontline doctor, but he felt completely out of his depth in front of Wang Nanjin. Just one morning with him had been a major blow to his confidence.

Wu Ting listened quietly. After finishing the last bite of his meal, he said,

”Everyone get some rest during the lunch break. This afternoon, I’ll go meet these ’experts’.”
