Chapter 170: Chapter 156: Graduate Student Orientation: The Goddess and the Academic God Both Hail Wu Ting

Like all the other new students, Wu Ting found his way into the lecture hall. He sat down in his assigned seat, which was far in the back. Wu Ting sat there quietly, closing his eyes to rest.

He really wasn’t very interested in this kind of matriculation ceremony. It didn’t have much to do with him, and he planned to leave as soon as it was over.

Inside the lecture hall, the large screen displayed the words ”Jinggang University Medical College 2024 Graduate Student Matriculation Ceremony.” In the top-left corner were the school’s emblem and its name.

The PowerPoint slide was about eighty percent bright red, giving it a festive, grand, and solemn feel.

On the wall beside the large screen, there was a pair of couplets. The one on the right read, ”Dedicate yourself to medicine, and abide by medical ethics.” The one on the left read, ”Love your country, and be loyal to the people.”

On the main stage, nine seats were arranged in a row. The dean of the graduate school, a bureau director, the vice dean, and several major department heads were in attendance.

Wu Ting glanced over casually. Dean Song was among them, and he was also very familiar with a few of the other major department heads, Shen Guofeng and Shen Xiaofei.

Once the scheduled time arrived, the matriculation ceremony officially began.

Dean Song began by welcoming the new students on behalf of the college’s leadership. He then gave the students a basic introduction to the college, covering its history, educational standards, program development, and talent acquisition efforts.

He also expressed his hope that all faculty and students would work together to ensure the quality of graduate student education...

Next, Director Deng, the head of the Department of Basic Medicine and the person in charge of the basic medicine degree program, introduced the department’s unique characteristics. He encouraged the new students to participate in activities like the Basic Medicine Innovation Forum and literature review conferences, and to maintain effective communication with their advisors and research groups.

After that, the other department heads, Shen Guofeng and Shen Xiaofei, took turns coming to the stage to talk about the faculty and achievements of their respective specialties.

Professor Shen Guofeng encouraged the new students in attendance to be diligent in their research, to scientifically plan and balance their studies, work, and family life, and to continuously innovate in their pursuit of excellence, so they could have a fulfilling and enjoyable graduate school experience.

Everyone broke into a round of applause. Wu Ting clapped a few times as well, as a sign of respect.

Soon, the leaders and major department heads finished their speeches. Next up were two outstanding graduate representatives.

First was Dr. Yan Xi, a ”senior sister” pursuing a direct-to-PhD track at the college.

Dr. Yan Xi was extremely popular in the graduate school. The moment she appeared on stage, her stunning looks and youthful energy drew a burst of applause from the audience.

Working as event staff, recent graduates Tang Yunyun and Yu Yamin also clapped excitedly, looking forward to Dr. Yan Xi’s speech.

Dr. Yan walked gracefully to the podium.

”Hello, everyone. I’m Yan Xi. Some of the junior students here may not know me, so I’ll start with a brief introduction...”

Yan Xi’s voice was lovely—melodious and moving. Without any pretense, she rattled off her various outstanding achievements from her master’s to her doctoral studies.

”Previously, I always believed that besides being a clinical discipline, medicine is, more importantly, a science. I thought I could simply participate in clinical work while focusing most of my energy on research, continuously improving medicine and advancing new technologies so they could better serve us in clinical practice... That was until I recently met a clinical genius who is much younger than me... Of course, he’s also brilliant when it comes to research...”

”After this period, I’ve discovered the value and significance of clinical experience for scientific research. Only by mastering both can we go further!”

As Yan Xi spoke, she smiled at someone in the back rows where the new students were seated.

”Lately, I’ve been conducting research for my doctoral thesis at a laparoscopic research center jointly established by Qinghe City Jiuhua Hospital, Xianglin City Xuanshang University Affiliated Hospital, our own Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital, and Fan City First Hospital.”

”At City First Hospital, I met Dr. Wu Ting of the research center. He’s the young physician I mentioned, the one who embodies both clinical skill and research talent...”

”Under Dr. Wu Ting’s leadership, we completed the specific clinical application of indocyanine green fluorescence laparoscopy. Furthermore, by combining the research findings of two other PhDs from Saint An Hospital and Jiuhua Hospital, we co-created the unique Perfect Triple Method Laparoscopic Assistance Skill.”

”The results of these projects led the *Jin Country Surgery Journal* to publish a special issue dedicated to our research center! What’s more, we will soon be applying for a National Youth Fund project...”

”I want to tell all the junior students here about the allure of clinical practice and the allure of research. I also hope that while you complete your research, you will also practice more in clinical settings, identify your shortcomings, and improve yourselves... Participate in and observe more surgeries... Learn from Dr. Wu Ting! He is my role model now.”

Hearing Dr. Yan Xi’s heartfelt speech, everyone was both surprised and deeply impressed.

”Dr. Yan Xi is amazing, as expected! She’s so incredible. She’s already published in a top domestic core journal during her PhD and is a key member of a national-level youth fund project.”

”But that Dr. Wu Ting she mentioned sounds even more incredible.”

”Just how amazing must this Dr. Wu Ting be for even Dr. Yan Xi to praise him so highly?”

Some new students even started searching for him online. Before this, they knew nothing about Fan City First Hospital and had no interest in it.

As staff members, the recent graduates Tang Yunyun and Yu Yamin were stunned to hear that even Dr. Yan Xi held Wu Ting in such high esteem.

City First Hospital, the emergency department’s research center, the genius Dr. Wu Ting who excelled in both clinical practice and research!

Wasn’t that her university classmate?

”Your classmate is that incredible?!”

Yu Yamin blinked, looking at Tang Yunyun in disbelief.

Tang Yunyun finally understood completely. It turned out that after just a few years, she was the one who was no longer in Wu Ting’s league.

She realized that Wu Ting’s recommendation could, to a certain extent, truly determine whether she had a chance to get into City First Hospital.

’Wu Ting, you’re actually this amazing!’

After Dr. Yan Xi finished her speech, the second outstanding graduate representative took the stage.

Compared to Yan Xi, who was still a PhD student, Wang Nanjin was more mature, and his resume was even more brilliant.

Moreover, this time, Wang Nanjin had intentionally polished his image, eloquently recounting the various awards, patents, papers, and youth fund projects he had accumulated since going to Jiuhua Hospital.

The new students in the audience gasped one after another, their eyes filled with admiration.

Yu Yamin and Tang Yunyun’s eyes also lit up. Wang Nanjin was clearly an object of their admiration and respect.

He was a young attending physician in the hepatobiliary surgery department of Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital. The only reason he hadn’t been promoted to associate chief physician yet was due to seniority requirements.

If Yan Xi was the ceiling, the ultimate goal for these new students during their time in graduate school, then Wang Nanjin’s achievements just a few years into his career were already the lifelong goal for most of the medical students present.

”Dr. Wang is so incredible!”

”Dr. Wu Ting is amazing, but there’s still a gap between him and Dr. Wang. Dr. Wang is the true genius who combines clinical practice and research!”

”I wish I could work and study under Dr. Wang.”

...

The new students’ curiosity and admiration for Wu Ting were completely overshadowed by Wang Nanjin’s glorious resume.

Sitting in the back row, Wu Ting breathed a sigh of relief, though he was also a bit speechless. ’Why did Dr. Yan have to drag me into her perfectly good outstanding graduate speech?’

’I just wanted to attend the ceremony low-key and then slip away. But she ended up putting me in the spotlight even more than herself. Thankfully, Dr. Wang stole the show, so I’m not the center of attention anymore.’

However, Wu Ting had only just let out a sigh of relief.

On stage, Wang Nanjin suddenly shifted his topic.

”The Dr. Wu Ting that Dr. Yan Xi just mentioned is, in fact, also a true clinical genius I’ve encountered recently. Dr. Wu and I have a great deal of mutual admiration...”

”During this time, I was part of an expert team from Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital on an exchange to discuss ERCP techniques. Unexpectedly, I encountered a patient with a rare mucinous cystic neoplasm in their emergency department.”

”At first, I nearly misdiagnosed it as hepatic cystic echinococcosis, but thankfully, Dr. Wu Ting stopped me in time. Using his comprehensive and meticulous ability to interpret medical imaging, he proposed a unique perspective. This, in turn, reminded me of a related patient case from a surgery I performed with Director Shen Xiaofei back in the day...”

Dr. Wang vividly described the tense atmosphere of the surgery at that time, how Wu Ting saved the day, his own subsequent moment of realization, and the thrilling and exciting experience of joining forces with Wu Ting to successfully complete the operation.

It had to be said that Wang Nanjin’s eloquence and storytelling ability were top-notch. The story he shared was not only entertaining but also professional and educational. Most importantly, it established both him and Wu Ting as geniuses.

The mutual admiration between the two, in particular, was something to marvel at and aspire to!

After Wang Nanjin finished speaking, the entire lecture hall erupted in fervent applause, and everyone was now filled with curiosity and respect for this Dr. Wu Ting.

Tang Yunyun and Yu Yamin listened as if to an epic tale, their blood pumping with excitement, their hearts filled with respect.

At that moment, they finally and completely understood that Wu Ting was no longer on the same level as them.

No wonder he didn’t care about the attitude Tang Yunyun and Yu Yamin had shown him. He had simply laughed it off.

An elite physician who could guide Dr. Yan Xi and share a mutual admiration with Dr. Wang, not to mention being the head of the emergency department’s research center at City First Hospital—how could a figure like that be bothered by nobodies like them?

Even if Wu Ting successfully recommended Tang Yunyun and Yu Yamin for positions, they would only end up running errands for doctors who were Wu Ting’s subordinates.

To Wu Ting, there was no real difference between using Tang Yunyun and Yu Yamin or any other recent graduates. They were just subordinates of his subordinates, workhorses among workhorses. In that case, using someone familiar was slightly better than using a complete stranger.

By taking on Tang Yunyun and Yu Yamin, Wu Ting was merely fostering a bit of goodwill with his alma mater and the Jinggang University graduate department, a small favor for fellow alumni.

On the stage, Wang Nanjin didn’t point him out, but he did smile and nod slightly in one direction.

Tang Yunyun and Yu Yamin followed Wang Nanjin’s gaze and, sure enough, it landed on Wu Ting.

Wu Ting simply returned a professional smile—calm, nonchalant, and effortless.

Tang Yunyun finally couldn’t hold back any longer. She took out her phone and typed a few lines, starting with an apology to Wu Ting.

Then, she very politely expressed her desire to join the emergency department’s research center at City First Hospital. Her tone was humble and respectful.

At this moment, Wu Ting was no longer just her old classmate. He was a future titan of the medical world—a truly brilliant talent who had already achieved significant results in the field and held considerable standing in the circle of elite doctors.

Perhaps, in her entire life, Tang Yunyun would never even qualify to be the assistant to Wu Ting’s assistant. Faced with such a gap, she couldn’t muster any other feelings; she didn’t dare to feel jealousy or resentment.

For the rest of her life, she could only look up to him from afar. In the future, she could brag to her friends: ”Wu Ting was my university classmate.”

Soon, the matriculation ceremony came to a successful conclusion.

The most lasting impression the ceremony left on this year’s new students wasn’t Dean Song, the various department heads, the goddess Yan Xi, or Dr. Wang Nanjin.

It was the unseen but deeply admired Dr. Wu Ting!
