Doctor: I Can Synthesize Infinite Entries

Chapter 160: Chapter 148: Graduate Interview: Wu Ting’s Heavenly Display!

[Congratulations, Host, for completing a reverse-teaching surgery with Zhang Zhong and Qin Donglai, helping them improve skills that had been stagnant for years. Acquired an Entry from Zhang Zhong: Clinical ECG Diagnostic Skill (Yellow). The clinical ECG diagnostic skill of a director of general surgery, allowing for the diagnosis of basic symptoms.]

In the past, Wu Ting would have been pleasantly surprised. But after getting purple-tier Entries left and right from professors like Ma Mengchao, Shen Guofeng, and Liang Ang, this one seemed just okay.

ECG analysis is a reflection of a surgeon’s comprehensive abilities. With the aid of ECG diagnostics, it helps emergency doctors make faster, more accurate diagnoses. It’s a practical, life-saving skill.

Although it was just a Yellow Entry, it was enough to handle a variety of common conditions, and it filled a major gap in Wu Ting’s skillset.

A new week began, during which a team of experts from Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital was scheduled for a week-long exchange.

However, Wu Ting wasn’t concerned with that. Meeting Professor Shen Siyuan was his top priority!

Ignoring the reception for the expert team from Haijin Port, Wu Ting rushed to Xiao City on Monday and found a hotel near Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital.

This way, he could head over first thing the next morning.

Shen Guofeng had specifically told him that Shen Siyuan was very particular about punctuality. If he was late due to some accident, the interview might be over before it even began.

Although the drive from Fan City to Xiao City was just over an hour, you could never rule out an accident or a traffic jam on the highway, so Wu Ting arrived a day early.

The next day, Wu Ting arrived at the cardiac surgery building bright and early.

It had to be said, Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital held a natural allure for all doctors in Jin Province.

Once upon a time, this had been Wu Ting’s dream workplace.

The cardiac surgery building already had some history; the entire structure was quite old, but that gave it a profound sense of history.

Inside the cardiac surgery building were numerous key laboratories, research centers, and all sorts of impressive-sounding titles.

Wu Ting walked through the lobby and into a long corridor, where he saw a display board. He paid special attention to the information about the cardiac surgery doctors.

Ranked first was Hu Zheyuan, the director of cardiac surgery. He was a senior expert, a local professor from the older generation with a widespread reputation, and one of the mentors Shen Guofeng had previously recommended.

The second was another director of cardiac surgery, Shao Yuqiao. In his forties, he was a pillar of the department, a core member of the staff, and the ”number one knife” of cardiac surgery at Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital!

The third was Deputy Director and Professor Shen Siyuan.

At only thirty-nine years old, Professor Shen Siyuan was truly the elite of the elite, the top figure of her generation.

Below them were other deputy directors, attending physicians, and resident doctors.

From the looks of it, this cardiac surgery department had clearly established a complete three-generation system of old, middle-aged, and young doctors, and their division of labor was very clear.

Director Hu held an administrative position, handled various affairs, and was gradually withdrawing from the front lines. Director Shao was the top clinical surgeon, with extremely rich surgical experience. Meanwhile, Professor Shen was completely dedicated to the field of scientific research.

Professor Shen Siyuan’s research area was the intersection of cardiac surgery and immunology, a very cutting-edge field.

The titles of Professor Shen’s published papers alone were enough to leave one impressed by their complexity, even without understanding them:

”A Study on the Changes of Spleen-Heart Peripheral Blood Immune Cells and the Role of lncRNA Sros1 in the Development and Progression of Heart Failure”

”Changes in Regulatory T-Cells and the Interventional Effects of Immunomodulation”

”A Study on Inducing Xenogeneic Heart Transplant Immune Tolerance Through Combined Peripheral-Central Preconditioning with Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells”

...

Shen Siyuan’s own mentor was a leading authority in the field of immunology in Jin Country. The main immunology textbooks were all edited by this Professor Ye.

Professor Shen’s research topics, on the other hand, were basically all in line with the latest international research. There were very few domestic references; she primarily used the latest foreign journals as research references.

Therefore, Professor Shen placed great importance on a graduate student’s learning ability and their capacity to read and apply foreign literature. Even when communicating with her team members, she would speak directly in a foreign language.

When Wu Ting arrived at the door of the laboratory Professor Shen had specified, he could hear voices conversing inside, all in a foreign language.

With the ’Top Student’s Foreign Language Ability’ he had acquired from Cheng Feng, Wu Ting felt no pressure at all.

Listening, Wu Ting began to understand and feel a sense of admiration.

Based on the conversation inside, many of the medical terms were from the latest original-language journals. They hadn’t been precisely translated into Chinese yet, nor had a consensus been reached on them domestically. Therefore, using the original foreign terms was actually easier to understand and less prone to ambiguity or misunderstanding.

’As expected of a team from Haijin Port Hospital.’

Currently, many top medical colleges in the country also offer courses taught entirely in a foreign language. They even frequently hold competitions for young teachers to teach entirely in a foreign language.

This was all to encourage medical students to better use foreign languages for communication and to facilitate scientific research. In the field of medicine, the country was still behind in many areas. Thus, if one wanted to achieve results and specialize in cutting-edge international topics, being unable to read and use original-language journals was not an option.

This was especially true for the interdisciplinary field of immunology and cardiac surgery that Professor Shen was researching.

Immunology research held a special status in the medical field. In the 20th century, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded for it as many as 18 times. The very first Nobel Prize was awarded for an achievement in immunology, and after the 1970s, immunology won the prize three times every decade!

Professor Shen’s lifelong aspiration was self-evident!

Wu Ting had nothing better to do, so he just listened from outside the door.

Inside the lab, they were discussing the interventional effects of immunomodulation on the peripheral blood of elderly patients with cardiac insufficiency.

The entire discussion was in a foreign language. Wu Ting didn’t understand the field of cardiac surgery, but with the super-memory he got from Ling Ling, he memorized everything, cramming it all in without full comprehension.

As he listened, he found it was actually quite interesting.

’Right now, the world’s elderly population was rapidly increasing, and chronic cardiac insufficiency was prevalent among them, making it one of the leading causes of death for the elderly. As a syndrome, chronic heart failure exhibited certain characteristics of chronic inflammatory and immune diseases, making it a very typical and highly significant area of research.’

’Without a doubt, if Professor Shen could make a breakthrough in this topic and take a step forward in treating chronic heart failure, it would be a world-renowned achievement. It could significantly increase average human life expectancy and the quality of life in old age.’

’Just listening to one of Professor Shen’s topics made Wu Ting feel more and more certain he had made the right choice.’

’In the future, if he could just obtain an Entry related to Professor Shen Siyuan’s research topic and then make a breakthrough based on it, that would be a truly world-shaking achievement.’

While Wu Ting was enjoying the listen and daydreaming about the future, Shen Siyuan spotted the engrossed young man outside through the glass window on the lab door.

Shen Siyuan had long since received all sorts of personal information about Wu Ting—including some casual photos—that Shen Guofeng had relentlessly sent her.

So, she recognized Wu Ting easily.

’Shen Siyuan acknowledged Wu Ting’s current achievements, but the areas where he had produced results were all very basic clinical surgeries. Her own field of research, while inseparable from the clinical front lines, also required boundless imagination and comprehensive research capabilities.’

’The most basic requirement was the ability to read and apply foreign journals.’

Shen Siyuan paused the discussion with her research team and called Wu Ting inside.

”Wu Ting, come here.”

Hearing Wu Ting’s name, the members of Professor Shen’s team in the lab looked at him curiously. ’Who’s this young doctor? He’s not bad-looking!’

”Shen Guofeng told me you want to be my graduate student, but it’s not that simple.”

Shen Siyuan immediately tried to intimidate him.

Her team members were also surprised and sighed internally. ’Another Iron Head.’

They were well aware of how formidable their director was and how strict she was with her graduate students.

Sure enough, Shen Siyuan then did something that even they felt was a bit excessive.

”Wu Ting, if you want to be my graduate student, the ability to read and apply foreign papers is a fundamental skill. How about this: I’m going to read a paper aloud. After I’m done, I want you to give me a rough summary of its main points, as well as your own thoughts and opinions on the topic!”

Shen Siyuan waved to one of her team members.

”Huang Dian, give me that journal... yes, the one we were just discussing...”

Seeing Shen Siyuan’s choice, Huang Dian felt a little sorry for Wu Ting.

’This was just an interview for a graduate student, but she was starting him off on Hell Mode.’

’This was an original-language SCI paper. If one could read it while looking up words and using translation software, it might be possible to summarize the main content. But to summarize the main points after just hearing Professor Shen read it once—and on top of that, to provide his own views and opinions? That was just terrifying.’

’Especially in a completely unfamiliar field, he would probably forget one sentence as soon as he heard the next.’

The team members all looked at Wu Ting with pity.

’Even if Professor Shen didn’t want to accept a graduate student, there was no need to embarrass him like this, was there?’

’But then again, when they recalled how merciless Professor Shen always was, they resigned themselves to it.’

”...Analysis of changes in percentage of phenotype CD4+CD45RA+ and CD4+CD45RO+ in peripheral blood and effect of immunomodulation in aged male patients with chronic cardiac insufficiency...”

Professor Shen showed no mercy and began reading fluently.

However, after she had spoken only a few sentences, Wu Ting called for a stop.

Seeing Wu Ting’s reaction, Professor Shen lowered the journal in confusion.

The team members blinked. ’This kid really is all show and no substance,’ they thought. ’Is he giving up already?’

Wu Ting slowly recalled what he’d heard, then spoke calmly.

”Professor Shen, when I arrived just now, I overheard your discussion about the contents of this paper. So, you don’t need to keep reading.”

Wu Ting possessed a photographic memory. Combined with the ’Top Student’s Foreign Language Ability (Purple)’—which he had synthesized from three of Cheng Feng’s ’Foreign Language Ability’ Entries—a discussion about a paper of this level was certainly no challenge for him.

To give Professor Shen Siyuan a deep impression,

Wu Ting began his performance.

”When I arrived, you, Professor Shen, were just saying, ’...lymphocytes that mainly induce myocardial infiltration and the progression of the disease...’”

”Next, a female voice said, ’...of primary T-cells (CD4+CD45RA+) and memory T-cells (CD4+CD45RO+) in peripheral blood in aged male patients...’”

”After that was a male voice, which must have been you, Huang Dian: ’...CD8+ and phenotype of CD4+CD45RA+ and CD4+CD45RO+ and the possible therapeutic mechanism. Methods: The participants were 155 aged...’”

...

...

Wu Ting recited every single line of the conversation.

To save time, he even intentionally sped up his speech to three times the normal speed.

After his recitation, the entire laboratory was dead silent. It was too shocking!

And after he finished his recitation, Wu Ting began to summarize the conversation, while also adding his own thoughts and the reasons why he chose Professor Shen, launching his counterattack.

He looked at Shen Siyuan with a pair of clear eyes, full of confidence and composure.

”...As the world’s elderly population rapidly increases, chronic cardiac insufficiency is becoming more prevalent... As a typical syndrome, if a breakthrough can be made in the aspects of chronic inflammation and immune diseases, it will surely lead to a world-renowned achievement, especially with the research into naive primary T-cells...”

”I chose you, Professor Shen, because I value this dedication and talent, this pursuit of the highest honor in the medical field...”

Even someone as strict as Shen Siyuan was mentally shaken. ’This Wu Ting... is no simple character.’

Her team members’ scalps tingled. ’This Wu Ting... damn, he’s a real talent!’

Even the notoriously difficult Shen Siyuan was completely stunned!
