Bride of Retribution: Aloof Billionaire's Dominant Game

”Of course, I really need this job.” Avery Jane let out a long sigh of relief in her heart. Although it’s just a part of an advertisement, she finally has a job, right?

She was straightforward; few girls are this direct nowadays. At least they’d pretend a bit, go through the motions, but she answered very bluntly.

”Then let’s hope we collaborate happily.” Beckett Wright raised his glass, the liquid inside gleaming like a Ruby in the romantic light.

Rumors, much like bacteria, spread quickly and frighteningly.

The story of Avery Jane forcibly splitting off a share from an already decided contract was vividly depicted by everyone at M.C Headquarters.

Some were jealous, some envious, because if there really was a relationship, then Beckett, a young and promising designer, is far better than those older, unsightly bosses reeking of money who own companies.

The pure and beautiful model and the talented designer had already evolved into an ambiguous, imaginative relationship in their mouths. But Avery had long become immune to these rumors; what truly troubled her was not here, but at home.

After finishing her dinner, Avery returned to the Yates Family estate, not expecting another scenario waiting for her.

”Avery, our Yates Family has treated you not badly. Doing such a thing, how could you repay us like this, how could you repay Wenyard?” The study in the Yates Family was a place of antique charm, with heavy curtains drawn year-round, leaving the room’s air stagnant, carrying a long-standing smell of smoke. What’s even more uncomfortable was Old Master Yates’ gaze, stern with a hint of disdain.

”Master, I won’t see Mr. Hughes anymore.” Avery looked at Arthur Yates. She didn’t want to defend herself; no explanation would seem like an excuse given the circumstances of that day, any more words would be pale and powerless.

She now had a job, and the pay was considerable enough to allow her some time to continue saving money.

”I don’t care about your relationship with Joshua Hughes, but one thing you must remember, only Evelyn can become his wife. And you must help Evelyn accomplish this. After Evelyn marries into the Hughes Family, if you and Joshua behave, I’ll let her turn a blind eye. But don’t overdo it, and promise never to have children.” Under Arthur’s normally pretentious demeanor lay a greedy heart.

Since Joshua first visited the Yates Family, Arthur had sensed something unusual about his behavior, and yesterday confirmed his suspicion.

His murky eyes emitting greed: ”This is what you should do for the Yates Family. We’ve supported you for five, six years; now is your time to contribute.”

His implication was exceedingly clear, and for a moment Avery’s face turned pale, her lips trembling: ”Master, how could this be, I am Wenyard’s wife.”

Avery’s heart was icy; her husband had only been gone for half a year, yet her father-in-law was forcing her to become her sister-in-law’s man’s mistress. How could he utter such words? An elder always speaking of righteousness and morality, how could he be like this?

Couldn’t they understand her desire to keep clean for Wenyard’s sake?

”He’s already dead, but the Yates Family cannot fall. Avery, being with Joshua Hughes won’t be a loss to you. My goal is for Evelyn to secure her place as Mrs. Hughes. Avery, you cannot marry into the Hughes Family; disregard your lineage, you’ve been married once, losing the qualification to compete with Evelyn.” Arthur stepped before Avery, keeping her at the Yates Family indeed has benefits, as she’s highly advantageous to him for having his daughter secure the rightful Mrs. Hughes position.

After a brief talk in the study, Avery felt as though she’d died.

Joshua Hughes was forcing her, and now even Old Master Yates was pushing her towards a dead end. She didn’t know what else she could do.

Life always tangled her in such cycles, never giving her a moment’s peace.

Just when she felt hopeful having secured a contract, Arthur’s words were like the coldest December wind, slicing at her chest like icy blades, making drawing breath a luxury.

”Oh my, I truly couldn’t see it before, Avery, you have such skills to seduce Mr. Hughes. It’s simply our Evelyn lacked methods, not being as enticing as you, low and wanton, drawing men into madness just by them encountering you. But Avery, don’t think Mr. Hughes has genuine interest in you; you’re just a plaything to him. I warn you, if you dare entertain any wrongful thoughts, I’ll make sure you suffer. You’d best focus on how to ensure Evelyn marries into the Hughes Family quickly. Once Evelyn secures the main wife’s status, she might reward you with a meal. If you dare to disrupt, once Evelyn is married, you won’t even have a place to stand.” Harper Johnson’s face was filled with anger. She hadn’t missed the scene that day; at least by now, Joshua’s thoughts seemed more invested in Avery, so even foolishly, she knew Avery’s words back then weren’t mere retort.
