Divine Emperor of Death

Chapter 5047 Strange Pulsation

Davis stepped through the entrance.

The exterior was quite modest, but the interior was a sight to see.

The living space within could extend many times since the lobby stretched out before them in a long, sweeping expanse that had no business existing inside a three-story rectangular building. This was none other than the effect of spatial expansion. Davis realized immediately.

Whoever had originally commissioned this place had spent considerably on the internal formations while keeping the outside deliberately unremarkable, making him wonder which power was trying to act low-key in this city, where displaying wealth would get them more benefits, but on second thought, Davis guessed it wouldnʼt be the case since it would also invite taxation, conscription, and unwanted trouble.

The ceiling rose high, supported by thick columns of the same pale grey stone as the exterior, but here the stone had been worked with more care. Faint luminescent veins ran through each column, not glowing brightly enough to draw attention but sufficient to cast the entire lobby in a steady, even light that did not flicker.

The floor was wide and flat, and uncluttered. Doors lined both sides at measured intervals, and a broad staircase at the far end split into two directions at the landing above.

The group followed behind Davis and spread out instinctively, each of them taking stock of the space with the practiced habit of people who never entered a new location without first mapping the exits.

Fairy Qiyra Darkstar tilted her head upward and said nothing.

The Frostcloud Sword Empress let out a slow breath as it made the air chill.

Davis walked to the center of the lobby and turned around to face them. There were a lot of Exalts here. Each of them was capable, each of them here for a purpose that the handsome fatty would lose sleep over if he ever learned it, but if he learned what the weakest person here possessed, he might hang himself for letting them in.

Davis glanced at Fairy Qiyra Darkstar and the others.

”Pick a room on the second floor,” He remarked, ”Two to a room if you prefer company, one if you donʼt. Leave the third floor alone for now. Iʼll record your auras in the formations before tonight.”

No one said anything in response, causing Davis to inwardly laugh.

These disciples were capable of protecting their own skin, so why would they depend on these weak formations?

Besides, they wouldnʼt mind if he took the master room here, too, right?

He looked at each of them in turn, wanting to ask something, but then decided against it before adding, ”Rest. Eat if you need to. We are not moving until Iʼve gone through the jade slip and have something worth moving toward.”

Fairy Qiyra Darkstar and the others still ignored him as they looked around.

Davis didnʼt know whether to laugh or cry. They were acting as if he had forcefully brought them here. He could tell that regret was slowly setting in for these peace lovers who didnʼt do anything this bold, but to him, he had already done plenty of things that made his logical side of the mind feel regret, but what use was it?

If the heart doesnʼt follow, what would be left would be nothing but a killing machine.

Nonetheless, Davis was still grateful for their help.

They dispersed without ceremony, their footsteps quieting as they took to the staircase and filtered through the doors on the second floor.

Davis stood in the quiet for a moment.

The heaven and earth energy inside was noticeably denser than outside, contained and preserved by the internal formations. The building had been well maintained despite its recent change of ownership, but there were no signs of maids, servants, or the like. He made a note to examine the formation inscriptions along the base more thoroughly later. Understanding what was already here would tell him whether anyone had left anything behind that they did not intend to leave or intentionally left. He didnʼt want anyone to ruin their plans in this way.

That would be laughable.

Evelynn had waited beside him without moving.

He looked at her, and she looked back, and no words were exchanged that needed to be. He extended his hand, and she took it, and they walked together toward the staircase, bypassing the second floor entirely and continuing to the third.

The third-floor corridor was narrower than the floors below and held only three doors. The formations up here were more refined. Davis could feel the layering, privacy barriers, sound isolation, and a mild spatial layer that would alert the holder of the formation core to anyone stepping onto the floor uninvited. Whoever had lived here before had used this floor personally.

He chose the door at the far end.

The room beyond was large and simply furnished. A wide bed framed in dark wood sat against the far wall beneath a window that looked out toward the faint luminescence of the Ethereal Lumina Tree in the distance, its glow washing gently through the glass and settling across the floor in pale shifting patterns. A table and two chairs occupied one corner. Shelves lined the wall to the left, but they were empty and awaiting new items to be placed.

However, did they have such thoughts?

Davis could only wryly smile when Evelynn released his hand and walked to the window.

She stood there for a moment, the treeʼs distant light touching her face, and Davis watched her from the doorway with a quietness that had nothing to do with caution and everything to do with the fact that some moments did not need to be interrupted.

”The city is quite peaceful,” Evelynn uttered eventually, her voice soft and dejected.

”Hmm.”

Davis nodded as he strode towards her and hugged her from behind.

There was no need to say anything about this since they were here to personally destroy that peace.

Evelynn had also come here, ready to raise hell, but when she saw the people in the outer city already suffering after having lost their loved ones and being able to trust no one, she wondered if they were the ones who were wrong or if it was the heavens who created this era in order to hunt her husband.

”Wisteria noticed the peculiarity.” Evelynn suddenly uttered, ”There is more than one ghost thatʼs hunting the people outside.”

”Hmm, I also noticed, but what does it have to do with us?”

”Nothing in particular, but Wisteria said that these ghosts are growing fast. One possible answer is that these ghosts have another hunting ground where they hunt Empyreans or even Exalts. However, assuming the people these ghosts target are all weak, but they still manage to grow stronger faster than your average cultivator with a lot of resources, that means they mustʼve been powerful when they were alive.”

”…”

Davis raised his brows.

He didnʼt consider this before, as he was focused on making the living turn into corpses, but Evelynn was saying corpses were already available?

He felt like he should ask the handsome fatty about this matter.

Still, Davis didnʼt place too much emphasis on this matter. He still wanted to go hunt some lowlifes here and make them do his bidding, but most importantly, be his meat shield.

Instead, he looked at Evelynn with some worry.

”I know youʼre worried. How about you let me use the poison replica? I bet I can handle it.”

”You canʼt.” Evelynn openly denied him with a calm expression, ”Dying is one thing, but this is one of the most terrifying karmic poisons. Even if you revive, youʼll still be in a poisoned state. It will be extremely difficult for you to sense it.”

”You also arenʼt immune to this poison.” Davis had a steely expression.

”But I know how to use it without being hit with much of a backlash. If I am poisoned, I can command the replica to absorb it back as long as I donʼt accidentally die.”

”Does the replica have a spirit?”

”No, but it has instinctively recognized me after I killed quite a few Nether Devils with it back when we went to pick up a cultivation resource for Natalya.”

Davis couldnʼt help but sigh.

What was wrong with these poison treasures and poisonous bloodlines?

The former wanted to kill and spread the poison like it was spreading disease, and the latter grew to be twisted and sadistic. Sure, his Evelynn was not a sadistic person. She was kind, but the poisonous bloodline of the Three-Eyed Chromatic Hex Arachnid made her quite vicious and allowed her to latch onto her battle potential.

However, this time around, her bloodline had improved beyond her control.

He wondered if she would be able to withstand the quirks gained from the mutation of the Evilbane Hexweaver Arachnid and the Chaos Dragon.

Particularly, the Evilbane Hexweaver Arachnid was an evil spider species that appeared in the battlefields of the Asura Dimension. He heard that they were quite bloodthirsty. He hadnʼt seen Evelynn become bloodthirsty, perhaps thanks to the blood of the Chaos Dragon, but still, he was worried that she would lose control of herself during battle.

After all, the Evilbane Hexweaver Arachnid was known to love killing in the cruelest way possible.

If there was any consolation, Hexena Xylusc also hadnʼt shown any ridiculous traits like this, but that was on the basis that they didnʼt enter a battle state or a killing state.

He felt this was very important because on the day when she would unleash the poison replica but didnʼt retreat and continued to slaughter while taking delight was the day when his Evelynn might intrinsically change. He didnʼt want to see her change, nor did he want to give this big enough responsibility to poison the wormhole. He had no doubt that hundreds of millions of beasts were going to die in the most miserable way.

Perhaps the poison might even spread if the wormhole suddenly decided to vomit it all out. He felt his imagination was quite good.

Davisʼs lips curled with a wry smile.

Fortunately, he thought he had a way to allow her to control this dangerous quirk if it popped up as his hands snaked towards her sensitive parts.

Suddenly, he froze, making Evelynn blink before she turned around and attacked his lips.

=========

Somewhere in the twelve cities, a black-robed person who was thoroughly cloaked in a hood fetched out a white stone from their ring and observed it. Their palm was strangely translucent, but it quickly regained its opaqueness as the black-robed person held the white stone.

”Strange… why did this pulsate just now?”
