I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 440, Plans Have Been Stalled

“Shaman, what is a carriage?” Yu Ying asked curiously.

Yu Ying had occasionally heard this word but had never known what it meant.

“I’ve told you before, it’s a type of transportation vehicle,” Su Bai explained simply.

He had mentioned transportation vehicles before when talking about hot air balloons, so Yu Ying should be able to understand.

Yu Ying nodded thoughtfully and said, “I remember now. Shaman, anything that can replace walking to help us move is called a transportation vehicle, right?”

“That’s not entirely correct, but your understanding of it is fine.” Su Bai said.

He had originally wanted to explain that war horses or some Ferocious Beasts could also be used as mounts.

But after thinking about it, he decided it was better not to explain too much to her, who would not be able to understand it anyway. It would be better to explain when they actually get created.

“Shaman, can Uncle Gu Mu or Uncle Shan Qiu start making the carriage?” Yu Ying asked curiously.

“Not yet possible. We haven’t found horses yet, so there’s no rush to make a carriage,” Su Bai calmly said.

He was quite eager to have them start making carriages, but they had yet to capture any horses.

The Tribe still had carpentry and stonemasonry to do, so there was no need to rush the creation of a carriage.

It would be enough to make them when they found horses. After all, it would not be very difficult to assemble two large wheels with several wooden planks, right?

“Shaman, what does a horse look like? Aren’t there any in the forest?” Yu Ying asked.

This was the first time she had heard of an animal called a horse. Since it could be used as a transportation vehicle, it must be very special.

“It’s similar to cattle and sheep, but also a bit different. You’ll know when you see one,” Su Bai smiled.

Although horses, cattle, and sheep were all mammals, they had slightly different functions.

Cattle were mainly responsible for labour or were quite good as a food source, while sheep’s main function was to produce milk, or to collect wool.

Horses had different functions. They could be used as draft horses to pull things.

Though, their main use was to be used as war horses. Warriors riding on horses could gallop forward, wielding weapons in their hands, and easily take the enemies’ head.

This kind of team was called a cavalry. They would advance in great numbers, with formidable combat power.

Yu Ying wagged her pink fox tail and said with partial understanding, “Shaman, what were you drawing this morning?”

She had seen Su Bai drawing something on Wolf Tail Grass Paper in the morning, but she could not understand what it was and had been wondering about it for a long time before deciding to ask.

“I was drawing city walls. The Tribe must have city walls around it.” Su Bai said.

City walls had always been within his planning scope. If they were going to build a city, then they must have city walls to protect it.

It was important that they had city walls for military defence. That way, they could resist external invasions.

Also, ordinary Ferocious Beasts and wild animals would not be able to easily enter the city once they had proper walls, which would also protect the people in the Tribe to a great extent.

“City walls? Shaman, what are city walls?” Yu Ying once again heard a term she did not quite understand.

“It’s like the wooden walls we have now, except all those wooden walls will be replaced. We’ll use stones piled on top of each other. That’s called city walls,” Su Bai said seriously.

The current row of wooden walls could be said to be not sturdy at all, they could stop people but that was about it.

Once Ferocious Beasts appeared, those wooden walls would be like a mantis trying to stop a chariot. They would easily get crushed or be jumped over.

He had experienced this during the rainy season. At that time, a River Bear appeared in the river and it was heading towards the Tribe.

If it had not been killed in time by the Totem Warriors in the river, it might have easily climbed over that row of wooden walls, and the people of the Tribe would have suffered casualties.

So, the construction of city walls was urgent. Without city walls, the safety of the people in the Tribe would be difficult to guarantee, even with powerful Totem Warriors.

After all, the power of Totem Warriors was limited, while those cruel Ferocious Beasts came in endless waves.

The Tribe could not spend too much time dealing with those Ferocious Beasts every day; time had to be spent on development.

Those Ferocious Beasts just needed to be kept out with high city walls.

By then, arranging a group of Totem Warriors to patrol on the city walls would save a lot of effort.

“Is it like building cement houses? Will the entire Tribe be surrounded by city walls?” Yu Ying widened her pink eyes.

Although she did not understand much about this, she had certainly seen it happening. She had witnessed the Tribe building cement houses. She knew that building cement houses was not easy, and if they were going to build city walls around the Tribe, it would definitely be a difficult task.

“Yes, city walls need to be built around the entire Tribe.” Su Bai nodded seriously.

“Shaman, what about the cement houses in the Tribe?” Yu Ying worried, because if people were sent to build city walls, then no one would have time to build cement houses.

The snow season was coming, and cement houses were definitely better than wooden houses. At this point in time, it seemed that building cement houses would yield higher returns than city walls.

“It is under the to-do list for later. Although the city walls must be built, the Tribe doesn’t have enough manpower right now.” Su Bai frowned.

This was the reason for his headache. He had plans for farming, but it was stalled due to manpower issues, which was frustrating.

If the Tribe had enough manpower, his farming plan would proceed quickly and steadily.

“Shaman, our Tribe already has quite a few people now,” Yu Ying said, tilting her head.

She ultimately did not understand much about this matter and only felt that the Tribe currently had many more people than before.

“Silly girl, these few people are far from enough. If we have twice as many people, that would be just about right.” Su Bai smiled.

If they had that many more people, then he could arrange for this group of people to build the city walls. It would be the perfect number.

However, ideals were beautiful, while reality was harsh.

The most important thing was to see how things were going with the Spotted Deer Tribe. After all, Qing Yan and the others had gone out with a plan to attract more people.

“Shaman, but if there are more people, there won’t be enough dried meat…” Yu Ying said worriedly.

Although the dried meat in the Tribe was enough for the people in the Tribe right now, if there were more people, it would not be enough.

“Don’t worry about that, It’s not a problem.” Su Bai confidently said.
