Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

The entrance of the train station was bustling with taxis coming and going. They were all there to pick up fares and, seeing Meng Qingmei and her husband waiting for someone, they approached them to ask, ”Are you leaving?”

”No, we’re not leaving! Someone’s picking us up.” Meng Qingmei declined the taxi driver and irritably looked at her watch, saying to her husband, ”Why hasn’t Yan Huan arrived yet?”

”Let’s wait a bit longer. Maybe he’s busy with something at his unit?” Ji Shuanglin suggested.

”Actually, we don’t really need her to pick us up. We can just take a taxi. It’d only take a moment to get to Ji Chuan’s workplace. Once we get there, we can easily find out where he lives, right?”

”No. Let’s wait a bit more. You already told her the time. I bet Yan Huan is hurrying on her way. Look at this weather; it’s pouring rain, the roads might be difficult to travel. It could even be traffic.”

Meng Qingmei felt that her husband made a valid point, so she patiently waited for Yan Huan.

During that period, mobile phones were not yet widespread. The first people to use them were wealthy businessmen, who had important dealings and didn’t mind spending a lot of money on a mobile phone.

Back then, mobile phones were called ’Dageda’ and owning one was considered very impressive.

Therefore, intellectuals like Meng Qingmei and Ji Shuanglin didn’t own mobile phones, so they just had to patiently wait.

As time passed from six o’clock to seven, then from seven to seven-thirty, Meng Qingmei grew a bit anxious. She was eager to see her son, but with Yan Huan not showing up, she and her husband were stuck at the train station and didn’t dare to leave.

They feared that as soon as they moved, Yan Huan would arrive, and they’d miss her for sure.

”Old Ji, do you think Yan Huan has forgotten us?” Meng Qingmei began to wonder.

”Impossible. Maybe something held her up?” Ji Shuanglin had seen Yan Huan last time and felt she seemed like a reliable person.

”You wait here for a moment. I’ll go to the public phone booth to call Yan Huan.”

Meng Qingmei went to the public phone booth in the plaza in front of the train station to make a call. She just had to insert the IC card, and she could dial.

She connected to the military line and called Yan Huan’s office.

Qiu Xinyi didn’t wait for the dinner to end and left early. Such dinners were a bit tedious for her, as she had no so-called camaraderie with these people.

The only reason she attended the gathering was to get Yan Huan drunk.

By getting Yan Huan drunk, she would delay her from picking up her future in-laws, leaving a bad impression on them.

First impressions may seem trivial, but they’re actually quite important. Sometimes, the quality of a first impression directly determines the position you hold in someone’s heart.

If you leave a bad impression on someone, it can affect that person’s view of you for a long time.

Meng Qingmei is Yan Huan’s future mother-in-law, and it’s her first visit to Nancheng. If Yan Huan is delayed from picking them up due to other issues, what would Meng Qingmei think?

Especially, since they would be mothers- and daughters-in-law in the future!

Mother-and-daughter-in-law relationships have always been difficult. If not handled well, they can affect not only the unity and peace of the home but even the harmony and affection between the couple.

Qiu Xinyi didn’t know what kind of people Yan Huan’s future in-laws were, but she knew clearly that regardless of who they were, if faced with a daughter-in-law who didn’t respect them and was inconsiderate, they would certainly not be pleased.

That was Qiu Xinyi’s thought.

Even if she couldn’t have Ji Chuan, she intended to plant a bomb in Yan Huan and Ji Chuan’s life.
