Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1246: Chapter 1248: Just Speak Your Mind

Li Junping finally managed to swallow all the mouthfuls of steamed bun, hiccuping violently.

”Go get your mom some water!” Qin Ru Hai saw that Qin Fen was being too outrageous, just looking on as his mom almost choked to death on a steamed bun without lifting a finger, and he glared at him and yelled.

Only then did Qin Fen slowly stand up, staggered to the water vat in the kitchen, and ladled out half a dipper of cold water to bring over.

Li Junping guzzled the half dipper of water, took a breath and then said, ”Don’t even mention it, I haven’t eaten all day, nearly starved to death. All the money I brought was used up for Qin Fen’s treatment, leaving only enough for one person’s meal, so Qin Fen bought a few buns to eat.”

”What? The money you guys took with you when you left wasn’t a small amount, how could it all be spent?” Qin Ru Hai was shocked, ”Is the hospital that expensive to treat an illness?”

”What did you think? The doctor said it would require several courses of treatment. This is only the first one.” Thinking about the follow-up medical expenses was truly a headache; before, she could still ask Qin Jian for some money.

Now, there wasn’t even a thought about it.

All of Qin Jian’s money, bankbooks and everything, were in An Hao’s hands. Now that she and An Hao were at such odds, it would be strange if An Hao gave her money.

There was even less hope for the An Family’s vegetable garden.

”How much money is this going to cost?” Qin Ru Hai was deeply worried as he listened, ”There isn’t any income at home, only expenses. We’re just getting by with daily living and meals, and now we have to pay for Qin Fen’s treatment, we’re really not well off.

”It’s a huge expense.” Li Junping was also worried, ”Our family could starve and we might still not manage to gather enough money.”

” Might as well let Qin Fen go out and find a job to earn money. We can’t just keep supporting him. Look at how he’s been living for a year and a half since marrying; nothing but mooching! He’s gnawed us down to the bare bones.” Qin Ru Hai, puffing on his pipe, said in frustration, ”Look at the children raised by the same parents, look at what kind of life Qin Jian is living? Spousal affection, harmonious life. And look at Qin Fen, his life is neither human nor ghost-like.”

”You think I want this?” Qin Fen was struck in a sore spot again and stood up angrily, ”Look at who Qin Jian’s real father is? Commander! They don’t have to do anything, they lack nothing in their household.”

”You little bastard!” Qin Ru Hai was so angered by him that he took off his cloth shoe and hurled it furiously at Qin Fen, ”Did I raise you to disgrace me?”

”Enough! Even if you beat him to death it’s useless! Look at him now, can he go work? Would you feel at ease? What if he gets into trouble again? Wouldn’t that cost us old folks our lives? Better let him get well, relieve that anxiety in his heart, too.” Li Junping felt her son was already miserable enough, and after all, she couldn’t bear to let him suffer the slightest grievance.

”What you’re saying might as well not be said at all! If he doesn’t go earn money, are you saying you go out to work? Or should I?” No one wants two old timers like us out in the workforce.

”Neither of us.” Li Junping looked at Qin Ru Hai and said, ”Do you still remember that bracelet I gave to An Hao? I must have that bracelet back.”

”What? You’re going around in circles just to say this?” Qin Ru Hai, knocking his pipe bowl against the stone slabs of the courtyard with a clatter, ”Don’t even think about it. It was already given to An Hao, it belongs to her now. Once you gave it away, you can’t ask for it back.”
