Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 385: Chapter 385 An Hao’s Concern

Qin Jian was yanked back to reality by the piercing scream. He abruptly turned his head to look at the other side of the street.

A woman was sitting on the ground, holding a child in her arms, crying heart-wrenchingly, ”Catch the thief! Catch the thief! That damn thief! He stole my life-saving money! My child’s father is still in the hospital waiting for the money to have surgery!”

Not far away, two pickpockets dressed in denim outfits were running like they had wings on their heels, faster than rabbits.

”An Hao, head back to school by yourself! I’m going after the thief!” Qin Jian said, and took off his army cap to place it in An Hao’s hands, ”When I return, I’ll find you to get my cap back!”

”Ah, Qin Jian... be careful!” An Hao hadn’t finished her sentence when she saw Qin Jian merge into the crowd like a gust of wind.

Watching the green figure get farther and farther away in her line of sight, an intense sense of foreboding suddenly surged in An Hao’s heart... The feeling coiled around her heart like a venomous snake, sending chills through her over and over.

Qin Jian had gone after the thief, and An Hao made her way into the crowd to check on the woman. She was crying her eyes out, nose running, and her child, not even two years old, was also crying so hard he was nearly out of breath.

Around her, a group of kindhearted people surrounded her, trying to comfort her. Some even donated money, two yuan from one, five from another.

An Hao watched as the sister cried, feeling a lump in her throat.

She had experienced despair and knew the difficulty of lacking money. So she reached into her pocket and gave the last ten yuan she had to the woman.

”Thank you all! But I can’t accept your money! You all have it tough too! Just now a PLA soldier went after the thief to help me. When the money is returned, I’ll...” The woman didn’t finish her sentence.

Someone in the crowd spoke up, ”I tell you, sister, there’s a good chance you won’t get your money back.”

”Why?” she asked, wiping her tears.

”Those two, I’ve seen them before. They’re part of a gang! These guys are too bold. There was talk in town that a thief stole money and even stabbed someone, and it was their gang.”

”Then why don’t the police catch them?”

”Who says they don’t? Plenty have been caught! But I’ve heard there are still accomplices at large! That PLA soldier... sigh...”

The man did not finish his sentence, but the meaning was clear enough.

Qin Jian was chasing the thieves alone... Would he run into trouble...?

An Hao’s heart grew even more anxious.

But what could An Hao do, other than wait for him?

Aside from worrying, An Hao reported to the police station and then went back to the school alone.

It was hard to pass the time, and An Hao got through two distracted days.

There were no classes on Wednesday morning, and An Hao got up before dawn, ready to go see if she could find anything at the military unit.

Qin Jian had told her to wait for him, but since he had not returned yet, she was really worried that something might have happened to him.

Even though she moved quietly, she still disturbed Gu Shuangshuang in the opposite bunk.

Gu Shuangshuang opened her eyes and saw An Hao dressed and ready to leave. Still groggy, she asked, ”An Hao, are you getting up so early to exercise?”

”Hmm. I’ve got something to do,” An Hao replied, grabbing her bag and heading out the door. She got to the entrance and then stopped to say to Gu Shuangshuang, ”If I’m not back by class time, could you please ask the teacher to excuse me?”

”Excuse you? What’s going on? Why would you need to do that out of the blue? An Hao, you’ve seemed out of it these past couple of days. Is something wrong?” Gu Shuangshuang said while climbing out of bed.
