Reborn As Super Heiress

Zeng Fugui was in a panic at this moment, unaware that the situation outside had drastically changed. When he noticed that the police initially refused to let him make a call but later agreed, he felt a sense of pride, believing that even the police department feared the power backing him. Eagerly, he picked up the phone to call his great-uncle.

Zeng Fugui’s great-aunt was not part of the system but married to Xie Chuyu, the head of the Public Security Department of H Province. Xie Chuyu was known for nepotism and abusing his power to favor his own people, having bailed out Zeng Fugui from numerous messes and received many kickbacks in the process. The fact that Zeng Fugui could act recklessly in H Museum was due to Xie Chuyu’s support behind the scenes, leaving Director Li and others unable to deal with Zeng Fugui.

In the past, whenever there was trouble, his great-uncle would always help him without any hesitation, so Zeng Fugui was used to calling Xie Chuyu. However, this time when he called, unexpectedly, after dialing a few times and getting through, it just turned into a busy signal with no one answering.

Zeng Fugui found it puzzling, assuming that his great-uncle was busy and hadn’t noticed the call. So he decided to call his great-aunt instead, and she answered quickly.

”Who is it?”

”Great-aunt, it’s me, Fugui.”

”Oh, Fugui, why aren’t you using your cell phone and calling from this unfamiliar landline number? I didn’t recognize it.”

”Don’t mention it, great-aunt. I’m at the police station now, something has happened. Please help me call my great-uncle, ask him to quickly come up with a solution for me.”

When she heard Zeng Fugui mention being at the police station, her heart skipped a beat: ”Police station? How did you end up there, and who is so blind as to dare arrest you? Alright, hold on. I’ll call your great-uncle right away. Stay calm, he’ll make a call and get you out. Don’t worry!”

With this, Zeng’s great-aunt hurriedly hung up the phone.

Comforted by his great-aunt’s words, Zeng Fugui felt reassured. He crossed his legs arrogantly, waiting nonchalantly for his great-uncle’s call, and gave a contemptuous glance at the few policemen in the room, a smug expression on his face.

Seeing Zeng Fugui’s pretentious and self-important demeanor, Feng Qing couldn’t help but chuckle sarcastically, thinking to himself, go ahead and be smug, with that red tape document, I’d like to see how long you’ll stay smug!

Sure enough, not long after Zeng Fugui’s call was made, the phone at the police department rang. After taking the call, the operator’s expression changed, urgently gesturing to Feng Qing, indicating that the person on the other end was quite influential.

Feng Qing’s face turned cold, and the smile at the corner of his mouth widened as he walked over to take the call, greeting the caller with utmost politeness.

The person on the other side of the phone assumed an authoritative stance and spoke officially: ”Feng Qing, this is Cheng Guiming. I just heard you guys arrested Zeng Fugui, the Deputy Director of H Museum? What’s going on? The problem with H Museum’s artifacts — you should be arresting the thieves trafficking those artifacts, not targeting a Deputy Director. Is this how you conduct business? Let him go immediately!”

Cheng Guiming was a district party secretary, with a significantly higher rank than Feng Qing. Yet, Feng Qing found Cheng Guiming’s remarks increasingly amusing:

”Secretary Cheng, your words are quite interesting. How is this targeting? Our police department never makes random arrests. We enforce the law impartially and would never unjustly accuse an innocent person. We have both witnesses and material evidence. Deputy Director Zeng is indeed suspected of stealing artifacts for personal gain. This isn’t something that can be dismissed by a simple word from you.”

Feng Qing’s businesslike tone made Cheng Guiming very uncomfortable. He thought he had made his point clear, but Feng Qing seemed impervious, refusing to give face, so Cheng Guiming, somewhat annoyed, couldn’t help but raise his voice and sternly say:

”Feng Qing! Don’t say I didn’t warn you, there are people backing Zeng Fugui. If you really stir them up, that person is no pushover, and you might find your position as the head of the criminal investigation team at its end. I advise you to know what’s good for you, or you might end up ruining yourself!”

Feng Qing couldn’t help but sneer: ”Know what’s good for me, Secretary Cheng. I’ll return that advice to you. Zeng Fugui’s business is none of your concern, but if you insist on getting involved, don’t blame me for what happens. You’d better look out for yourself!”

Only then did Cheng Guiming sense something was amiss. In past district meetings, although Feng Qing was never one for much conversation, he certainly wasn’t this discourteous, and there was a hidden meaning in Feng Qing’s words. Cheng Guiming, having reached the position of district party secretary, wasn’t clueless. Realizing something had shifted, he couldn’t help but ask: ”You…what do you mean by this?”

Feng Qing knew that Cheng Guiming hadn’t been directly involved in Zeng Fugui’s case. If Cheng Guiming was making this call, it had to be at someone else’s behest — and he was all too familiar with that someone. At this point, he couldn’t very well set someone up, so he decided to hint openly and secretly:

”Secretary Cheng, this call was at the behest of that person from the Xie Family, right? I’ll be honest with you. Zeng Fugui is really in trouble this time. A red tape document has come down, directly from the central government, demanding strict punishment for the museum artifact switch case. It’s not just about Zeng Fugui; even that person from the Xie Family might not be able to stay uninvolved. So I advise you to stay out of it and keep your distance from that family for the time being!”

Upon hearing this, Cheng Guiming felt his mind buzz, going blank for a moment, his entire face paling: ”Red tape document? Are you serious?”

Feng Qing nodded: ”Would I deceive you about something like this? I might as well tell you another thing — the Zeng and Xie families are far too bold. They switched a third of the over a thousand artifacts in the museum’s exhibit hall. This has already enraged the higher-ups, and there’s no way this is blowing over quietly. Zeng Fugui’s arrest is just the first step.”

Cheng Guiming now understood, shivering from head to toe with a cold sweat breaking out on his back, experiencing a burst of fear:

”No wonder it was the wife from the Xie Family who called me just now. I was wondering why it was his wife calling. I suppose Xie himself is eager to distance himself as much as possible. Damn, I almost got used as a pawn by them! Lucky for me, I encountered you today, Feng Qing, or I’d have really been played by that wife from the Xie Family!”

Feng Qing glanced over at the carefree Zeng Fugui, smiling: ”It’s all right, just stay out of it. I reckon the discipline commission will soon take action. That person from the Xie Family is not clean either and will soon be invited over for tea.”
