Reborn As Super Heiress

Chapter 494: Chapter 490: Something Happened

Just after one in the morning, Huo Sining was sleeping in a daze when he heard a gunshot.

Before Huo Sining could react, Song Leyin suddenly sat up from the bed and exclaimed, ”Something’s happened!”

Huo Sining was abruptly awakened. He got dressed and followed Song Leyin out the door, where they found chaos outside. The area around the ancient tomb was in disorder, with blinding spotlights beaming over. Ding Liang and the rest of the trainees had also been woken by the noise and were running out from their dormitories.

”It seems like it’s happening near the ancient tomb! Could those tomb robbers have come back?”

”All the items from the ancient tomb have been cleared out. Are those people looking to get themselves killed?”

”I don’t think it’s the tomb robbers, that bunch isn’t that stupid.”

The trainees were discussing fervently as Huo Sining involuntarily furrowed his brows. The group ran towards the site of the incident and saw police and soldiers crowding around the entrance to the ancient tomb. Captain Wu was on the phone, reporting to someone.

”What’s happened?”

Just as Huo Sining and the others arrived at the scene, Professor Xie Daoyuan and the other professors also hurried over anxiously upon hearing the news. They were baffled by the scene in front of them.

Everyone was puzzled when, at that moment, someone emerged from the crowd carrying a stretcher. Seeing the person on the stretcher, Huo Sining immediately stiffened.

”Our people have been on guard vigilantly, making sure no one could sneak in. However, this person, we don’t know how or when he sneaked into the tomb. The passage beneath the mountain on that side has been blown up; he definitely didn’t get through there.”

Pointing at the person being carried out, Captain Wu explained to Xie Daoyuan, ”This man was standing at the entrance to the ancient tomb. Our team members asked him to leave, but he did not respond. We had no choice but to fire warning shots, but he was completely indifferent.”

”Our team members were about to apprehend him when he suddenly collapsed. The man convulsed a few times and then stopped moving, which scared our team members quite a bit.”

Professor Xie Daoyuan was stunned for a moment, and then Li Xuanbing also noticed the man on the stretcher, with his eyes wide open and a vacant look on his pale face. She gave a shocked cry, ”Ah, this person... he’s the one who delivered the Tang Sancai during the day!”

”You’ve seen him?” Professor Xie Daoyuan frowned and glanced at Huo Sining and the others.

Captain Wu nodded, ”We all saw him during the day. He brought a Tri-colored Tang Horse figurine and some of the trainees noticed something off about him, so they notified us. We interrogated him and found out that he was associated with the tomb robbers, acting as their lookout. The Tri-colored Tang Horse was his payment from the tomb robbers.”

Li Xuanbing, originally an atheist, couldn’t help but shiver uncontrollably when she saw the terrified expression on the man’s face.

She looked over at Huo Sining and carefully asked, ”Captain Wu, is there any chance of saving him?”

Captain Wu shook his head, ”He’s already breathless. Looks like he was scared to death. He seemed a bit out of it during the day, probably scared out of his wits over the past few days.”

Upon hearing this, Li Xuanbing’s face turned deathly pale, thinking of the fact she had touched the Tri-colored Tang Horse earlier that day, almost bursting into tears; next to her, Feng Yang was also incredibly frightened, looking in panic at the migrant worker lying on the stretcher.

”What’s going on?” Seeing the unusual expressions of the two, Professor Xie Daoyuan couldn’t help but raise his voice and demanded to know.

Li Xuanbing was already afraid and when Xie Daoyuan pressed for answers, she couldn’t care for anything else and started to sob as she spoke:

”During the interrogation by Captain Wu in the daytime, that person said the Tri-colored Tang Horse was an ominous object. After he took the horse home, his wife miscarried, and a coworker who was living with him touched the horse and soon after broke his leg.”

”Now this man has inexplicably died in this ancient tomb, there must be something wrong with that Tri-colored Tang Horse! Today, Feng Yang, Huo Sining, and I all touched the horse, and the next to be unlucky could be us!”

The professors looked at each other in dismay, with Ma Liwen being the first to reject the superstition, asking, ”Where is that Tri-colored Tang Horse effigy? Bring it here for me to see!”

Captain Wu explained, ”It has already been taken away by the staff of the Cultural Relics Bureau.”

He then chuckled and reassured them, ”Do not worry, it’s merely a coincidence. This person must have done too many guilty deeds and scared himself witless.”

Li Xuanbing’s face turned ash-grey, obviously terrified, ”Then how do you explain him not sleeping in the construction dormitory in the middle of the night, and instead coming to this ancient tomb without anyone noticing?”

Captain Wu dryly said, ”He probably wanted to come and see if there were any treasures left in the tomb that he could take advantage of and get rich from...”

After finishing his words, the smile vanished from Captain Wu’s face, as even he found his own explanation far-fetched; if the other party truly wanted to get rich, he wouldn’t have handed over the Tri-colored Tang Horse.

Just as he awkwardly pondered how to explain, Gu Xu’s phone rang abruptly. After he took the call, his expression darkened considerably.

”It’s from the Cultural Relics Bureau. A shipment of relics was involved in a traffic accident. The driver and the accompanying staff member are both critically injured and unconscious.”

Gu Xu’s eyes flickered with shock and concern, particularly worried about Huo Sining, ”That Tri-colored Tang Horse was on that vehicle.”

Older people tend to have some reverence for deities and spirits, especially Xie Daoyuan, who had worked as a cleric with Lu Huairu and had seen many strange and bizarre things. Hearing Gu Xu’s words, his face suddenly changed, and he directly asked, ”Who else has touched that Tri-colored Tang Horse effigy?”

Ji Kun looked perplexed at Xie Daoyuan, ”Professor Xie?”

Xie Daoyuan sighed, ”Humans light candles, spirits blow them out, ever heard of it? It’s a covenant between the living and the dead that has been passed down for a thousand years, never to be broken.”

”I’m not an atheist, and although I also believe that there are no ghosts or spirits in this world, not everything can be explained by science.”

”Just to be on the safe side, I’ll invite a high monk from Mount Wutai to perform a Daoist exorcism ceremony tomorrow. Anyone who has touched that Tri-colored Tang Horse effigy should have the monk help dispel evil and suppress any shock they might feel.”

Hearing what Xie Daoyuan said, the other professors looked unconvinced, finding Xie Daoyuan’s approach utterly absurd. Ma Liwen was particularly scornful of Xie’s words.

Shi Qingyun also wanted to object, but seeing the panicked and nervous looks on Li Xuanbing and Feng Yang, he didn’t know how to start.

Huo Sining stood silently to the side, her gaze sweeping gloomily across Li Xuanbing’s face.

Just a moment ago, as Huo Sining firmly held Li Xuanbing’s hand, preparing to comfort her, Huo Sining noticed something that shocked her.
