Reborn As Super Heiress

Chapter 474: Chapter 470 Uncle Gu

Ding Liang was distant by nature, and Huo Sining wasn’t fond of talking, so the other trainees’ hope of prying into specifics was only wishful thinking. Even when the curious ones asked, the two would simply brush off the questions without revealing a single word.

Around four in the morning, deeply asleep, Huo Sining was suddenly shaken awake by her roommate, Song Leyin, ”Huo Sining, get up quickly!”

Huo Sining had been exhausted from the day’s toils, sleeping soundly at the moment, and becoming abruptly awoken irritated her greatly. It took her eyes a long while to open, and only then did she react, ”What’s going on?”

As Song Leyin packed her things, she said to Huo Sining, ”We’ve been told to assemble urgently. Get up and pack quickly; the professors are waiting for us outside!”

Upon hearing this, Huo Sining’s grogginess considerably faded, and she got up and started getting dressed while asking, ”Where are we going?”

Song Leyin shook her head, ”Not sure, but I just saw some military vehicles arriving outside, and a few people in uniforms talking to Professor Xie and the others.”

Military uniforms? Huo Sining frowned. Archaeological work didn’t seem to have much to do with the military, did it? Why were troops being deployed?

”Hurry up and come out after you’re ready. I’m going to call the others.”

Seeing that Huo Sining was still cold and unresponsive, Song Leyin repeated herself before opening the door and walking out.

Huo Sining didn’t dare delay, quickly finished dressing, grabbed her backpack, and walked out, indeed seeing several military jeeps parked in the open space in front of the plank houses.

Full of questions, Huo Sining intended to ask what was happening, but before she had a chance to talk to Ji Kun, she was invited by some soldiers onto a jeep and quickly left the ancient tomb camp.

A few professors sat in one military vehicle, while Huo Sining and other trainees were in another vehicle behind. Along the way, the trainees asked the driving soldiers for information, but unfortunately, they acted as if they hadn’t heard anything, completely ignoring them.

The group was both puzzled and frustrated, knowing that they wouldn’t be able to pry anything out of these soldiers.

Huo Sining had a brainwave and took out her phone to call Ji Kun. An officer in the front passenger seat turned his head to look at Huo Sining but didn’t say anything to stop her.

The call was brief, and after Ji Kun had only spoken a few words, it was ended. Huo Sining’s face relaxed, and the others became eager, ”What’s going on?”

Huo Sining smiled, ”Nothing serious; we’ve just been notified to go offer assistance. We’ll know the specifics once we get there.”

These words eased the tense atmosphere among everyone, and smiles started to appear on their previously anxious faces.

Song Leyin couldn’t help but whisper a complaint, ”If there’s a notification, just notify us. Why make a big scene in the middle of the night without clarifying what it’s all about? Isn’t this just scaring people? I thought something serious had happened.”

Since there were officers present, Song Leyin didn’t dare to speak too loudly, but Huo Sining still heard her.

She smiled and nodded, agreeing wholeheartedly with Song Leyin’s words.

This wasn’t a surprise attack; why were they behaving as if they were underground operatives? It had scared her into thinking that the ancient tomb might have been robbed by tomb robbers again, truly a significant fright.

However, Huo Sining was still somewhat puzzled. Why was it a military officer from the army who had come to pick them up? Could it be that the military was involved in this matter too?

After over two hours of the car jolting around, they finally reached their destination at just past six in the morning. The travelers got out, weary and drained, only then did they realize that they had arrived at a grand estate. In the courtyard stood a six-story building with several people waiting at the doorway, seemingly for them.

Professor Xie also alighted from the car, and upon seeing the people standing at the door, Xie Daoyuan was the first to walk over and exchanged handshakes and pleasantries. However, Ji Kun let out an involuntary snort upon seeing the newcomers and slowly followed behind, his expression rather unpleasant.

Huo Sining, however, was startled. As soon as she stepped out of the car, she saw a familiar figure. Who else could be standing by that building entrance if not Gu Xu?

”Could it be that I’m still half asleep and seeing things?” Huo Sining wondered, involuntarily reaching out to rub her eyes vigorously.

”What are you doing? Hurry up and follow!”

A gentle voice sounded in her ear, and Huo Sining suddenly looked up. Lo and behold, Gu Xu was already standing in front of her, looking down at her with an amused expression.

”You... Why are you here?” Huo Sining’s eyes widened in surprise and happiness.

It was then that Huo Sining noticed, for the first time, Gu Xu was wearing a camouflage uniform. Having become accustomed to seeing him in suits and formal attire, the sudden sight of him in camouflage gave off a different charm.

”What, too handsome, you got stunned?” Seeing Huo Sining’s dumbfounded appearance was a rarity, Gu Xu suddenly felt like teasing her, and he asked with an exaggerated and proud smile.

”Pfft--” Gu Xu, who usually acted as rigid as an old-fashioned scholar, also had his informal moments. Huo Sining couldn’t help but laugh, pinching the material of Gu Xu’s uniform, she said with a smile, ”I am indeed stunned. I never imagined Uncle Gu could look quite dashing in military attire!”

Uncle Gu?! Gu Xu was both amused and speechless, he had known this girl was sharp-tongued and wouldn’t have any sweet words for him.

At this time, the group over by Xie Daoyuan had finished their cordial greetings, when suddenly a voice asked, ”Professor Ji, I heard you brought over a new female apprentice this time. Where is she?”

Upon hearing this question, many eyes turned toward Ji Kun and Huo Sining. Gu Xu’s face remained unchanged, but Ji Kun’s expression had already darkened significantly.

As soon as Huo Sining heard the voice of the person speaking, she furrowed her brow. The man on the other side seemingly hadn’t noticed Huo Sining standing there and continued to speak unceremoniously:

”Even if this young lady has caught your favor, you shouldn’t disregard the rules like this. This archaeological quest is different from the previous ones; what was required were skilled professionals. In such circumstances, to misuse your authority, don’t you think it’s somewhat inappropriate?”

Speaking like a pedantic old scholar from ancient private schools, the other man criticized Ji Kun and then turned his criticism to Huo Sining:

”And you, young lady, it’s good to know how to make use of your resources, but you should also understand the situation. The antiques appraisal circle has its own rules, and being young and pretty isn’t capital. Professor Ji might favor you, but that doesn’t mean you can let it go to your head and forget who you are. Without real ability, you want to come here just to gild your resume, but even that requires our consent!”

The man’s words were very blunt, almost outright saying that Huo Sining had ascended the ranks through her looks, with the implication that she might have had an improper relationship with Ji Kun.

As soon as these words were spoken, not just Ji Kun, but even the other professors and students like Xie Daoyuan and Ding Liang showed indignation, and Gu Xu’s face turned iron blue.

However, aside from the few who knew the full story, the rest showed expressions of disdain, ridicule, or schadenfreude, as if Huo Sining had truly relied on unsavory methods to climb up to Ji Kun and secure this opportunity.
