My Alleged Husband

Chapter 476: Chapter 455 Impossible_1

Old Master Zhang really hadn’t expected his own son to come asking for help again over this matter after all these years. Never had he groveled before him like this; this was, indeed, the first time. And, yet again, it was for the sake of that so-called wife of his, a woman who had clearly cast him aside. But why did he persist in using that woman to hurt himself over and over? Could it be that, in the eyes of his own son, playing the role of a father was truly so insignificant? After having given so much, he couldn’t even earn a word of thanks, only repeated hurt. What sins had he committed in a past life to be rewarded with such a son in this one, to suffer such torment?

”Do you know that what you said to me today really hurts me deeply? He has already treated you that way, yet you treat her like this. I’ve been so good to you; why can’t you repay your own father properly? Don’t you realize that every decision you make inflicts untold pain on those who care about and love you? He has long since lost all feelings for you, yet you remain so deeply fixated. What more are you willing to do for her?”

Zhentian knew that his father wouldn’t agree to help him so easily, so he had prepared thoroughly for this visit. He was determined to make his father agree to help him willingly and without any thought of reward. Yet by doing so, he felt even more indebted to his father.

”Dad, you know as well as I do, matters of the heart can’t be forced, just like how you once gave up so much to be with mom. And now, I too am willing to give up everything for the one I love. She once gave so much for me, how could I just abandon her because of that one lie? I admit, I was confused when I left her because of that lie, and I didn’t foresee the consequences of my actions. It never occurred to me, after so many years, she still isn’t willing to forgive me.”

”If others are unwilling to forgive you, why should you persist in pleading and clinging to them shamelessly? Don’t you understand that only makes you seem spineless? Once you make a decision, don’t think about regretting it later. If you’re going to regret it, then don’t do it at all. Every time you act, you do so recklessly, yet afterward, you want to regret it. Do you really think there is an endless supply of regret medicine in this world? Do you believe there are that many people who will let you hurt them again and again, forgiving you each time? Not everyone is a saint; they just hope you will at least treat them well superficially, even if your love isn’t the sincerest. But you, you can’t even muster the effort for appearances. Do you think that’s fair to those who love you?”

”I know that making this decision today has hurt them, but I have no choice. Who hasn’t been selfish for the sake of love? I only want to be with my beloved. When I heartlessly abandoned her, only then did I realize that I couldn’t live without her. But, out of pride, I couldn’t ask for her back. As time went by, I slowly realized I wasn’t truly ready to let her go. But why should she have to suffer so much on account of one small matter of mine?”

Old Master Zhang was truly at a loss for words with his son. He was the one who had insisted on breaking up, and now was the same person who wanted her back. He didn’t know what he, as a father, was supposed to do. There were many things he couldn’t do, but for his son’s sake, he had done them regardless, only to end up like this. Now he wondered whether he should help his son one more time, risking further hurt.

”I really don’t know how to help you with this matter, because I’m not sure whether you’ll just repeat the past. After I help you, you might commit an outrageous act that damages the trust we have in you again. Everyone can overlook every mistake you’ve made, but I can’t, because it was I who raised you to be this way. I’m responsible for your many errors, over and over, and yet you still haven’t learned. You’re asking for my help now not because you truly understand your wrong, but because you can’t let go of her. Do you understand how much pain that brings to a father’s heart, to be repeatedly begged by his own son for a woman? Have you ever considered my feelings? Why must you be so selfish?”

”Dad, I’m sorry, but I have no other solution. I just hope to continue living with her. Maybe this decision surprised you all, but the thought of giving her up is impossible. If I let go of her, I’ll have no desire to live on. Without her, what’s the point of living? I might as well not live at all, then neither of us would suffer, right? I’ve thought about many ways, aiming to be with her, only to find that it’s not as simple as it seems. We had to overcome various difficulties, and finally, when we did end up together, a single small lie caused all this pain. How hurt must she have been when I abandoned her?”

”Have you ever considered how much your every action hurts me, as your father? You only think of her feelings; what am I, your father, to you? I just hope you can consider my perspective too, can also care for my feelings. But today, there’s absolutely no way I’ll help you with this. Even if you knelt down and begged me, I couldn’t possibly assist with this matter. The mistakes you’ve made are for you to bear, to fix. I cannot be expected to bail you out for life, and I don’t have the energy to help with these issues!”
