My Alleged Husband

Chapter 453: Chapter 432 Answer Me_1

”No, if we tell Grandpa about this now, he definitely won’t be able to bear such a shock. Do you want him to end up in the hospital overnight? I don’t want such a thing to happen again. Don’t say such things in the future. If you have any respect for Grandpa, then keep it a secret for a while. Being able to keep it a secret for a time is a happy time for Grandpa.”

”Are you out of your mind, husband? Do you really think Grandpa is an ignorant three-year-old child? How could he possibly not know about these things? If Grandpa entrusted this matter to you to investigate, it proves he trusts you and believes you’ll give him a fair answer, without any cover-up or fraud. But if you don’t tell him now, and Grandpa finds out about it through other channels, especially that it’s related to our Mom, won’t he be even more upset? It might even backfire by then. Grandpa actually has many ways to find out who did it, but he hasn’t chosen to investigate on his own. Instead, he’s given us this responsibility. He just hopes that we can clearly understand that not everyone in this world values family ties and benefits like we do— in others’ eyes, there are only benefits, no family ties. I hope you’ll consider this carefully and think about whether or not to tell Grandpa clearly, so he won’t feel even worse later, thinking that even his own grandson isn’t willing to tell him the truth. How would Grandpa be able to accept such a blow to his heart?”

Zhang Yichen felt that his wife had made a very reasonable point, and he hadn’t even considered this aspect himself. Would things be much easier if he could be as sensitive as his wife?

”Alright, I understand. I’ll think it over carefully and decide whether to tell Grandpa clearly. If in the end, I decide not to tell him, I hope you can support me and not tell Grandpa ahead of time. If Grandpa can be happy for a while, let him be happy. Why burden him with unhappy things when he could be enjoying his life? Let’s not discuss this any further for now. We’ll see tonight when we get home whether Grandpa asks about it. If he does, we’ll talk, but if he doesn’t, let’s not bring it up.”

As soon as the couple got home, Old Master Zhang, upon seeing his grandson and granddaughter-in-law return, quickly asked, ”How’s the investigation going? Is it the person we suspect? Don’t try to hide it from me. If you have found anything, I want you to answer me honestly.”

”Grandpa, we haven’t figured it out yet, and we don’t know who did it. Just relax and wait for our news at home, and don’t be too anxious. I believe we’ll figure it out one day!” Ran Zhihan quickly responded to Old Master Zhang.

”You two, as husband and wife, don’t think about concealing it from me with any tricks. I want you to tell me honestly who did it. If I find out you’re hiding something from me, then you don’t deserve to be my grandson and granddaughter-in-law. Move out and don’t let me ever see you again. Think it over carefully: will you tell me honestly or continue to hide it? I hope you make the right decision. If you choose to keep hiding it, you should be very clear about the consequences.”

Zhang Yichen knew what his grandpa meant. How could he not know what the consequences would be? He just didn’t know how to say it. Caught between his grandfather’s health and his duty to his grandfather, which should he choose? Should he betray his mother, or should he fulfill his filial duty to his grandfather? Making this choice was agonizing, but it had to be made; otherwise, he’d end up endangering both outcomes.

”Grandpa, I don’t even know how to start telling you, but I can say this much: we really hope to investigate a little longer, even though all evidence points to the person we have in mind. But I believe it’s not that simple. You must know my biological mother has never come back, she doesn’t know what our child looks like, how could she possibly know he is my child, and prevent him from going home late at night? Maybe she genuinely passed by chance, saw my child looking nice and well-behaved, and therefore asked my child to stay a little longer to talk to her. But we can’t rush to a decision so easily; many hasty decisions can hurt feelings between people. I hope we can settle this matter quietly. I don’t want it to spread too widely. My wife and I have kept it secret hoping that you could live happily without any negative impact. I hope you can give me a bit more time to investigate, as there are many things I need to verify myself. I need to clear up whether this was done on purpose or not. If it was intentional, you don’t need to tell me—I know the Zhang Family rules on how to deal with it.”

”Since you’ve spoken honestly now, Grandpa won’t blame you, but Grandpa hopes you’ll remember one thing: no matter what it is and no matter whom it’s for, you must never hide anything from Grandpa. If Grandpa ever finds out you’ve deceived him one day, he definitely won’t let you off. You know how much Grandpa loves you, cares for you. If you’ve really lied to Grandpa and made his heart suffer, how can it be accepted that his own grandchild has deceived him!”

”I’m sorry, Grandpa. We were wrong, but we did it hoping you could live happily, without being affected by anything unfavorable. I know we were wrong and I hope you won’t be upset, I also hope you’ll take care of yourself...”
