My Alleged Husband

Chapter 247: Chapter 227 I Will Surrender_1

Xia Jing heard her future daughter-in-law utter such words, and she was deeply moved. She had always understood that this girl was considerate and always thought about issues from others’ perspectives. She knew this girl was exceptionally kind and conducted herself with integrity; in fact, she didn’t hate the girl. She just didn’t know how to interact with her. Now, after this incident, she had come to a realization—how could she continue to hurt such a kind-hearted girl over and over again? Besides, the girl had parents of her own; wouldn’t her parents feel heartbroken if she kept hurting their daughter? As parents themselves, if someone hurt their own son, they would certainly feel unwilling to accept it. If that was the case, why impose on others what one wouldn’t want for oneself, to let them experience such pain? That would be too selfish. When she realized this, she had decided to go to the police station and confess her guilt. She smiled at her future daughter-in-law and said, ”I know you’re a good girl. From the first day I met you, I understood that you were understanding, smart, and surely a virtuous person. Actually, I’ve always had things to say to you, but I never knew how to begin. You might think I look down upon commoner’s daughters, but that’s not the case. I only didn’t want my son’s future to be dragged down by a commoner’s daughter. But I know now that you would give up your very life for my son, you’ve sacrificed so much for him. I’ve realized that with such a wonderful girl loving him, what have I got to worry about? It’s not easy to find a confidante in life, to find a true friend, and even less so to find someone who loves him more than their own life. So I’ve come to an understanding now. I agree to you being with my son, Yichen. I hope you two can live a happy and joyful life together, and hope that my interference won’t create any resentment between you. After this incident, I understand that I’ll never be able to return to the Zhang Family again, but I have no regrets. Through this, I’ve seen clearly what kind of person you truly are, and that makes me very at ease. Having someone like you to care for Zhang Yichen fulfills my heart. The love that I’ve deprived him of all these years, I can no longer make up for, as I may spend the rest of my life in prison, but I hope that you can return the love I owe him. To him, you matter more than his mother; your place is more secure than mine. He can cope without me, his mother, but he can’t lose you. I see now, in his heart, I am dispensable, but without you, he would be in agony. How can I let my own actions cause my son to suffer so? I cannot let my mistakes make him pay such a heavy price. I hope you will treat him well in the future, and that you can build a happy and loving family together. Don’t let your children follow in his footsteps. Ultimately, I have failed him in this life and cannot make amends. Please apologize to him on my behalf. I don’t presume to ask for his forgiveness anymore, as I don’t have the right to ask for anything. Now, I only hope that you can lead a safe life, that you can live happily ever after with him. That alone is enough for me.”

Ran Zhihan had not expected her mother-in-law to say such things. She had just overheard the conversation between her grandfather and Xia Jing and knew that under no circumstances did she want to turn herself in. But why, after talking to her for just a short while, did she decide to go to the police station herself? Could there be some other reason?

”Auntie, you really don’t have to turn yourself in. I’ve already said I won’t pursue anybody’s responsibility for this incident. Although you shouldn’t have to bear any responsibility for your past mistakes, I only hope that in the future, when you act, you will think from your son’s perspective and consider his feelings a bit more. What might not seem particularly important in your eyes could be extremely important to him. Everyone thinks differently, and after all these years apart, there is bound to be a generation gap between you and him. I wish that whatever you do, you would take a moment to calmly reflect on how it might hurt those who love you. You need to understand that those whom you can hurt so easily are those who love you; they feel heartbroken over even a small mistake from you. But if you continue to deeply hurt those who love you, then it will become impossible to repair those relationships to their original state later on. I hope you can understand that everything should be approached with calmness, and not to act impulsively based on emotions – that will not lead to good outcomes, including harming those who love you because of your actions...”

”Auntie understands, Auntie thanks you for the words you have spoken to me, I will always remember them in my heart. But now I’ve come to realize that since it was my own doing, I must pay for my mistakes. You can’t always wait for others to clean up the mess for you; otherwise, you’ll never know how much you can grow. Actually, I’m very happy to have this conversation with you today. These past few days, every time I spoke with you, it was either with cold indifference or malicious mockery. I caused you great harm, and if it weren’t for my stubbornness, you wouldn’t be lying here today. Auntie hopes you can forgive me!”

”Auntie, why would you even say that? I know all you did was out of love for him. He is your son; everything you do is rooted in the love of a mother for her son. How could I possibly blame you? Often, I don’t even know what to say, but Auntie, today I want to sincerely tell you something from the bottom of my heart. He holds you, his mother, very dearly in his heart, and your place as his mother is extremely significant to him. If he did not value his mother’s place in his heart, he wouldn’t feel so disappointed by the mistakes you’ve made. Auntie, actually, from the day I met him, I knew that his destiny was meant to be this way, and from that moment, I fell in love with him. My love for him has lasted a whole ten years. During these ten years, I’ve been looking for him at every moment. I don’t ask to spend my life with him, but I only wish to see him leading a happy life. For me, even if I can’t end up being with him, I am content. Loving someone is not about possession, but about happiness. When he’s happy, you are happy for his happiness, and when he’s sad, you feel even sadder than he does. When he encounters any difficulty, you feel more pained than he does, and when he’s in trouble, you’ll stand up fearlessly and clean up the mess for him. That is true love. In my eyes, I don’t crave for much because I understand that I am just an ordinary girl. I have no reason to insist that his love for me is unwavering, but at least over these ten years, I have been the only one in his heart. To me, that’s enough. Even if the person who ends up spending a lifetime with Yichen isn’t me, I will still smile and wish her well from behind. Because after all, he is someone I once loved deeply. He made my life vibrant, and it was because of him that I had the courage to study abroad. He has made my life quite different...”
