My Alleged Husband

Chapter 239: Chapter 219: Turn Yourself in!_1

Xia Jing was stunned. She didn’t want the mother-son relationship that she had finally established to be destroyed by her own hands again. She was feeling a bit regretful now and wished time could flow backward. If time could reverse according to her wishes, she would certainly not have had the heart to make that cut; if it weren’t for that cut, she wouldn’t be dealing with all these troubles now. Moreover, she would not have her son become her enemy in the path of life ahead, which was the last thing she wanted to see. In her heart, she had always cherished Zhang Yichen as the most beloved person. In her heart, her love for her son had long surpassed that for her husband. However, she didn’t realize that what she saw as love for her son was seen by others as harm, and even in the eyes of her own flesh and blood, it wasn’t love because her love was unacceptable. It wasn’t that she didn’t love her son; it was just that her way of expressing love was wrong. Because of this mistaken way of expressing love, she made the person she loved most get hurt over and over again. How could she be reconciled with that? She knew that all her faults could not be remedied, and she knew that her son had been hurt so much, all because of her wrong way of expressing love. She didn’t know what she should do; for so many years, she hadn’t been by her child’s side. She didn’t know how to relate to her child, nor did she know how to express her love for him. It was precisely because of this, she kept doing things that hurt Zhang Yichen again and again.

Zhentian saw his wife’s eyes filled with sorrow and regret, and it really pained his heart. He didn’t know how to step forward and smooth things over. He knew that this time, Xia Jing’s place in their son’s heart was completely gone. He knew the magnitude of the mistake his wife had made, a mistake that not only related to their son’s lifetime happiness but also to Xia Jing’s future. He didn’t know how to plead for her, or even if he should stand up and plead on Xia Jing’s behalf. After all, everything was Xia Jing’s doing. Although he had been involved, who would want to candidly confess their mistakes? Who would proudly admit to their wrongdoings? Isn’t everyone just looking to make others bear the consequences? Even though Zhentian was a man, he thought the same. He felt that since his wife had made so many mistakes, why not have someone bear this wrong to avoid losing the Zhang family’s status? He didn’t want to leave his father again. He knew his thoughts were selfish, but who lives a life completely devoid of selfishness? He just wanted himself and his son to live peacefully and happily together, even if for a very short time; in his heart, that would be a beautiful memory.

...

While everyone was still hesitating, the lights in the operating room went out, and the lead surgeon came out. He looked at the people standing outside and asked, ”Who here is a relative of the patient?”

At that moment, everyone was baffled. They didn’t know what this meant; they didn’t know if the surgery had been successful. Everything was still an unknown to them because the lead surgeon had not yet told them the final result. They were all making wild guesses, hoping their conjectures were just thoughts and not the reality. They looked at the lead surgeon, but he didn’t give them any response. They all thought that Ran Zhihan’s rescue efforts had been in vain, and she had passed away.

No one stepped forward to admit they were her family, except for Zhang Yichen, who walked out tremblingly, stood in front of the attending physician, and gently asked, ”Doctor, I’m her boyfriend. May I know how she’s doing? Has she passed the critical stage?”

Upon hearing Zhang Yichen’s inquiry, everyone looked up eagerly at the attending physician, all hoping for the outcome they desired.

”This girl is out of danger now, but she lost a lot of blood. During the surgery, she went into shock twice. Thanks to our resuscitation efforts, she’s regained autonomous breathing. However, the wound was very deep, and she is still in a coma. We hope that when she wakes up, she will face no further distress as her condition cannot withstand any more trauma. That would lead to a collapse of her condition, possibly leaving her permanently weakened. If you are her family members, I hope you can persuade her not to dwell on the distressing events and not to engage in anything she’s reluctant to do. It could worsen her condition and extend her hospital stay. So, I hope you as her family members will take it upon yourselves to comfort her. No matter what happened today that led to her severe injuries, I hope as her family you can provide the primary comfort she needs!”

When the people heard the attending physician announce that Ran Zhihan was no longer in life-threatening danger, they all breathed a sigh of relief. They thought that since Ran Zhihan was okay, perhaps Xia Jing wouldn’t be detained by the police, and maybe could escape the charge of intentional injury. However, what they didn’t expect was that Zhang Yichen would step forward and speak to Xia Jing in such a manner.

”Mom, don’t think that now that she has passed the critical stage, you can just walk away free. I hope you will surrender to the police voluntarily, rather than forcing me to take you there. It wouldn’t look good for either of us. You are my mother, and I don’t want to see you go to jail. But since you’ve done something wrong, you must face the consequences, and those are consequences of your own making. Could it be that you want to shirk responsibility, unwilling to account for your mistakes? You should know that no matter where you try to hide, the law’s justice is strict and fair, and it will not let you go unpunished. Do you want to be a fugitive wanted by the entire world? I hope that is not a day you wish to see. So, why not turn yourself in now? This would be better for you, for me, and for everyone else. It might even lessen your sentence. You should know what to do. You’re an elder, and in principle, it shouldn’t be my place to say these things to you, much less since I am your son. But the actions you took today, I simply cannot accept. If you err and choose to flee, then I feel you don’t deserve to be my mother. In my heart, even if my parents were beggars or ruffians, I believe that they would take responsibility for their actions. Such parents are strong and unshakeable in my heart. No matter what they did, I could forgive them because they are great figures in my mind, people willing to accept the consequences of their wrongdoing. To me, such parents are better than any other kind. I don’t want to see you one day being hunted down by the police and spending your life in prison because that would be torture for you and a wound to me. After all, you are my mother, and nobody wants to see that happen. Sometimes, I just wish you would consider things from my perspective, think a bit more about me—for me, that would be enough...”
