My Alleged Husband

Chapter 240: Chapter 220: Ran Zhihan Wakes Up!_1

Xia Jing heard her son say such words, and her heart was displeased. She couldn’t believe that at this crucial moment, her son was not on her side, let alone standing with her on the same front. Instead, he was asking her to turn herself in. She didn’t understand whether her son truly knew what turning oneself in meant. It meant admitting to the crime, admitting that she had intentionally injured someone. How was she supposed to live with herself after that?

At that moment, Xia Jing hated her son. She wished that the person before her was not her son. She couldn’t believe that this man, whom she had yearned for over a decade, was her own flesh and blood. Why was it said that one’s own children would stand with their mother on the same front at the most crucial time? Yet, why was her son doing the exact opposite? At this pivotal moment, instead of joining her, he was pushing her to confess, forcing her to walk step by step down a path of no return. Was this still her biological son? What meaning did this son bring to her existence? What was the point of keeping him at her side with all her might? She might as well not have fought tooth and nail to return here. Why did she have to come back only to face humiliation by her own son?

Everyone present, upon hearing Zhang Yichen’s words, thought that the boy’s actions were correct. Even if his own biological mother had done something wrong, he remained righteous and resolute to the extent that he even chastised his own mother. Ran Zhihan’s parents also felt that this future son-in-law was worthy of their respect. They believed that if they entrusted their only daughter to such a boy, they could do so with peace of mind. However, among all those present, only Xia Jing opposed her son’s statement. In her eyes, she had done nothing wrong. She simply felt that the whole incident was Ran Zhihan’s fault. She blamed Ran Zhihan for the entire mishap, convinced that if Ran Zhihan had not charged at her with all her might, the incident would never have happened. What she didn’t realize was that regardless of whether Ran had charged at her, once such an incident occurred, there was no escaping the legal consequences. Xia Jing had never considered what she would face in the future or the repercussions of her actions. She felt empowered to follow her instincts and believed that her son would forgive her no matter how grave her error, that her father would surely let her come home, her husband would never leave her, and even that the law would not punish her severely. Yet, Xia Jing failed to foresee that when she ruthlessly plunged the dagger into the chest of her son’s beloved girl, the outcome was destined to set. It branded her as Zhang Yichen’s enemy because she was the murderer who had killed his beloved; how could he willingly let the killer of his beloved woman return to his home? Wouldn’t he find that dangerous?

Old Master Zhang looked at Xia Jing, who was desperately unwilling to admit her mistake, and he truly did not know what to do. He knew that over the years, he hadn’t managed to speak a single word to her and Zhang Zhentian, nor had he contacted them even once. Perhaps it was precisely this that had led them to such extremeness in their hearts. He didn’t want his son and daughter-in-law to become murderers, nor did he wish for his daughter-in-law to kill without the slightest hesitation. He hoped that, a hundred years later, his daughter-in-law could face their ancestors without shame. Watching Xia Jing’s confused expression, he stepped forward and slowly said, ”Actually, making a mistake isn’t scary. What’s scary is when she commits an act and doesn’t have the courage to admit her fault but instead shifts the blame to someone else, making others take the fall for her. Such a person is the most pitiable. Everyone has selfish desires and wishes not to be the one responsible. But, when committing the act, nobody considers the consequences it will bring because, at that moment, that person is blinded by hatred. She cannot see right from wrong, nor does she understand the outcome of her actions, what she will lose or ultimately gain. In fact, such a person is the most sorrowful. Don’t be fooled by her superficial glory; inside, she’s loneliest, longing for her family’s love, hoping to someday reunite with them. Most such people are those who have lost touch with their families, who have run away from home, who have a home but can’t return...”

Xia Jing heard what Old Master Zhang said, and she was very dissatisfied in her heart. What did he mean by ”some people”? What did he mean by ”everyone”? His words were clearly targeting her. If that was the case, then why not speak plainly? Why beat around the bush? Was there any point in saying it like that? She said to Old Master Zhang with a raised voice, ”Dad, you’re clearly talking about me. Since you’re talking about me, then why don’t you just speak openly and directly? What do you mean by saying I don’t consider the consequences when I act, that I haven’t thought about other issues from a different perspective, what do you mean by what I will ultimately gain or lose? What exactly are you trying to say? I have to admit, I do regret. I shouldn’t have done it. I feel like I shouldn’t have harmed a life, it would make me lose my son, my husband, lose the family life that could have been happy forever, and even more, lose the freedom I have yearned for so many years. I know that when these things happened, I understood that I couldn’t escape the punishment of the law, but I don’t understand why in your eyes, you never thought about what kind of person I really am, and have already driven me out of the house. Why bother saying these things to me now? My life and death have nothing to do with you from now on, and I hope you don’t meddle in my affairs. My life is my own to control, you are not the master of my life, and you certainly can’t control my life and my destiny...”

......

They were all still here, arguing non-stop over the crime, when the doctor came out of Ran Zhihan’s ward. He said to Zhang Yichen, ”The patient has regained consciousness. She asked me to convey a message to you all: She doesn’t blame anyone for this matter, nor does she want any of you to pursue anyone’s responsibility. Also, she says she does not intend to delve deeply into this issue, regardless of whose fault it is. She wants to let it go, so please stop quarreling over it, as it prevents her from resting and recuperating in peace.”

Xia Jing had not expected this girl to plead for her. Originally, she might have felt grateful, but now she only felt that the girl was being hypocritically virtuous, making her father, her son, her husband all join her side against her. She felt the girl was very calculating, a match that she was utterly unable to meet. She felt completely inferior to the girl, thinking the depth of the girl’s scheming was far too profound.
