This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Ever since the problem with her face started, every time she saw her own face, she had an overwhelming urge to break down. Consequently, she hadn’t seen her own reflection in almost two weeks.

Now, she still lacked the courage to look at her face again.

Seeing this, Mr. Gu quickly comforted his daughter, ”If you don’t want to look, then don’t. Wait until you’re completely recovered, and you can give yourself a surprise then.”

After saying this, he stood up. ”You rest for a while; Dad’s going outside to make a phone call.”

Gu’s aunt, who was beside her, also picked up the bowl and chopsticks she had just finished with and went out with him.

”Alright, you go. I’ll sleep for a while.” Gu had long been accustomed to her father’s frequent phone calls. Just as she was about to lie down, she suddenly felt an itch where saliva had trickled from the corner of her mouth. She casually scratched it and then lay down.

She didn’t think anything of such a casual movement, and neither did Mr. Gu and her aunt.

Outside the hospital room, Mr. Gu went directly into the stairwell and, uncharacteristically, lit a cigarette.

Gu’s aunt sighed. ”Brother, if this is too much, just let the nanny come. You can’t keep watch like this every day; it’s not sustainable.”

Mr. Gu shook his head. ”You know this girl’s temperament; she dislikes being attended to by nannies. Besides, I’ve been so busy with my job all these years, I’ve shown her too little care.”

”If, by any chance, this time... fails... I can at least spend more time with her.”

”Then... what about Sister-in-law? Isn’t she coming back?”

”She’s in M-country, contacting doctors and looking for hospitals.”

”Any news?”

Mr. Gu took a harsh drag from his cigarette. ”No. All the doctors who’ve seen her inspection sheet have refused.”

Mr. Gu hesitated for a moment before continuing, ”However, there’s a piece of unconfirmed news. A medicine still in development is said to be able to repair nerve damage.”

The woman beside him was suddenly excited. She didn’t really believe in traditional Chinese medicine; deep down, she still felt Western medicine, modern medicine, was more reliable. ”Then what are you hesitating for? Contact them quickly!”

Mr. Gu shook his head. ”The information relayed back is that the medicine has severe side effects. It can simultaneously damage liver and kidney functions, and this damage is irreversible. Its efficacy is also unstable, so it has consistently failed to pass the human trial phase.”

He sighed. ”Unless it’s absolutely the last resort, I don’t want to take that step.”

The woman fell silent.

It seemed their only hope now lay with traditional Chinese medicine and Du Heng.

Meanwhile, Du Heng was currently troubled by Gu’s condition. He sensed a change, but he didn’t know if this change was for the better or worse.

He opened the long-unused external application. Seeing the number of disease records below, which occasionally increased by one or two, he knew this thing wasn’t of much use to him anymore. Its current use was just to accumulate the required number of disease records to see what the next reward would be, and also for the monthly subsidies it provided. As for those statistics – ever since Liao Quansheng launched those two medicines, this function that could have monitored treatment effectiveness had become purely nominal.

Cao Binghe was scrolling through his mobile phone but couldn’t help asking Du Heng, ”Director Du, after three days of treatment, do you feel any change in the patient?”

Du Heng thought for a moment before saying, ”This morning, when I inserted the needle at the ST-02 acupoint, I felt the insertion was just a tiny bit smoother.”

”But I can’t be sure now if my perception was wrong at the time.”

Cao Binghe instantly put away his mobile phone, saying with some excitement, ”It definitely wasn’t wrong! A feeling like yours couldn’t possibly be mistaken!”

Du Heng looked at the excited Cao Binghe and shook his head. ”Don’t be so absolute. I only had that feeling for a fleeting moment when inserting the needle at the ST-02 acupoint. I’m really not certain.”

Cao Binghe grew excited. After three days, they had finally heard a sliver of good news.

He had immense trust in Du Heng, perhaps even more than Du Heng trusted himself. ”It doesn’t matter if you’re not sure,” Cao Binghe said. ”Isn’t there another treatment session this afternoon when we’re back at work? You can try to sense it more carefully then.”

Du Heng took a deep breath. ”You’re right. I’ll just have to sense it again this afternoon.”

Saying this, he stood up, picked up the empty lunchbox from the table, and headed out. ”Right now, first, wash the dishes, and then get some sleep.”

”Yes, wash the dishes and sleep.” Cao Binghe also picked up the bowl beside him. ”Get plenty of rest so you can sense it properly this afternoon. Since you’re prepared this time, you definitely won’t misjudge it.”

With that, he quickened his pace to Du Heng’s side. ”Give me the lunchbox. I’ll get some hot water and wash it. You go rest first.”

Du Heng chuckled and declined Cao Binghe’s kind offer. ”Nevermind. I’ll wash it myself. It’s just one lunchbox; it won’t tire me out.”

However, just as he reached the doorway, a figure blocked his path.

”Director Du.”

”Why are you here?”
