This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Half an hour later, Du Heng walked out of the office carrying an iron. At the same time, Cao Binghe emerged with him, holding an antique-looking electric furnace. He had no idea where he had found it. It was the oldest-style electric furnace, the kind with a coil of spring-like electric heating wires inside and a ceramic casing.

Gu and her family in the hospital room knew the iron needed to be heated, but they hadn’t expected Du Heng to use such a method. They all looked at Du Heng strangely.

Those who knew Du Heng planned to use an iron for the treatment all gathered around, eager to see how Du Heng would snatch life from the jaws of death. Even bag day from across the corridor, despite the embarrassment, squeezed right into the heart of the crowd. He wanted to broaden his horizons and see how Du Heng would perform a treatment with an iron.

As for fighting for survival? Haha, once he learned about the patient’s condition, he didn’t think there was any fight for survival to be had. Western medicine, with its anatomy, neurology, and other disciplines, had already provided detailed explanations. He was unwilling to waste more words on it. He could admit Du Heng had some skills, but he didn’t believe Du Heng could challenge modern medicine. Especially using an iron for treatment—it was simply a colossal joke. Is this traditional Chinese medicine? Even a shaman performing a ritual wouldn’t think of using an iron. That huge iron lump... was he going to press it directly onto the patient’s face, like ironing clothes, smoothing out wrinkles? What a joke! It wouldn’t kill her, but the pain would be excruciating!

Actually, Du Heng hadn’t wanted this either; it wasn’t that he couldn’t have used a different iron lump. However, a very thick one would be difficult to heat, while one too thin would likely lose its heat before he could use it. Besides, he needed an iron lump that was easy to handle. After much thought, this kind of old-fashioned iron was the most suitable tool he could think of.

As for a heating source, there really was no choice. There were no stoves in the hospital. Even if there were, he couldn’t very well add coal and start a fire directly in the hospital room, could he? Induction cookers could work, but using them might be somewhat dangerous each time. But where could he find one? Even if the nurses had one in their dormitory, would they dare to bring it out? The head nurse would punish them severely if she found out. In the end, only alcohol lamps remained as an option. But how many alcohol lamps would it take to heat the iron to the required temperature? The problem was, heating an iron lump with alcohol lamps just didn’t seem reliable.

Left with no other choice, Cao Binghe had rummaged through the storeroom for a long time and finally found this device, solving Du Heng’s pressing problem.

Glancing at the onlookers, Du Heng had no intention of shooing them away. If this treatment succeeds, it doesn’t matter if they watch or not. If it fails, it still doesn’t matter. People would talk about it anyway, embellishing the story. It’s better to let them see it with their own eyes. Otherwise, if rumors spread and the story becomes some mystical tale, that wouldn’t be good.

While Cao Binghe prepared the electric furnace, Du Heng began his final instructions to Gu. ”Gu,” he said, ”I’ll be holding a red-hot iron very, very close to you shortly. You mustn’t be afraid, and you absolutely must not move. You must keep your body stable. Remember, trust me. You absolutely must trust me.”

It would be a lie to say she wasn’t afraid, Gu thought. In fact, she wasn’t just afraid; she was also a little annoyed. Her current appearance was already horrifying enough, and now, with so many people watching, she felt incredibly distressed. But she also knew this wasn’t the time to be willful. She had to listen to Du Heng obediently. Yet, even though she was mentally prepared, she couldn’t help but shudder at the sight of the red-hot iron on the electric furnace.

”Director Du, is it almost ready?” Cao Binghe, who was helping to heat the iron, reminded him softly.

Du Heng glanced back at the iron, now glowing faintly red. Then, he turned to the onlookers at the door. ”Everyone,” he addressed them, ”I know you’re curious about today’s treatment. But I must make this clear: during the treatment process, everyone must remain completely silent. No talking, and no making any other sounds. Also, stay exactly where you are now. Don’t move. Don’t push anyone, and don’t shift your own position. If any action on your part affects my treatment and consequently harms the patient, don’t blame me for being ruthless.”

Was there danger? Of course, there was. But Du Heng had decided not to drive everyone away. He just needed them to keep their distance and ensure they made no movements or sounds that could disturb him or the patient.

Cao Binghe, the resident doctor, and the nurse in charge of this hospital room proactively positioned themselves at the front, creating a two-meter diameter clearing in front of Du Heng. They herded everyone inside the room to stand against the walls and pushed those at the doorway completely outside.

This was no laughing matter. Du Heng might have the confidence to be lenient, but they couldn’t afford to be. If even the slightest thing went wrong, although Du Heng would be the one primarily responsible, the rest of them wouldn’t escape unscathed either. Colleagues, seniors, beauties, secret crushes—at this moment, everyone had to stand against the wall. Want to watch the show? Go home and gawk at your own underwear!

Du Heng paid them no mind. He took a deep breath and asked Gu, ”Are you ready?”

Gu stared intently at the red-hot iron. Even now, she had no idea how Du Heng intended to use it, but the mere sight of it was terrifying.
