This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

This student had found an excuse to shift the blame.

However, the Teacher’s expression immediately changed. She stared seriously at the girl who had spoken and said, ”You were disturbed? During rehearsal? I can tell you plainly, Du Xuejing’s ’disturbance’ was nowhere near enough. If this were a real emergency, do you think the patient’s family would just shout a few things in your ear? If you made a mistake, would they politely remind you? They would have laid hands on you long ago, screaming obscenities that would utterly crush your self-esteem.”

The girl felt terribly wronged; she had only said that one thing, not expecting to be so harshly berated. The Teacher then paid her no more attention and resumed her normal instruction, once again explaining in detail the easily overlooked aspects of first aid and the areas where procedures could easily go awry.

The Students on stage then swapped positions, with Du Xuejing taking on the role of the attending Doctor and starting the drill over. This time, the entire team effort was executed exactly according to the Teacher’s instructions, with almost no mistakes; it could be considered quite perfect.

However, in Du Heng’s eyes, there were still some minor irregularities in their technique, but these were trivial. After all, Du Xuejing was only a second-grade medical student; she still had six more years to study and practice, which was plenty of time.

When class ended, Du Xuejing and her best friend were about to leave. Du Heng quickly stood up, called out to her, and then walked her home. After picking up his Sister-in-law, Zhang Sumei, the four of them went to the restaurant Wu Shengnan had reserved to celebrate their moving-in.

Du Xuejing was incredibly excited the whole way, constantly asking Du Heng how her performance had been that day and if there were any areas where she could improve. Du Heng looked at the self-satisfied Du Xuejing, smiled, and then promptly brought her down to earth with a thud, critiquing the performance she was so proud of from beginning to end. By the time he finished, the girl could barely lift her head.

As for his Sister-in-law, Zhang Sumei, while she was full of praise for Du Heng, she had always believed in a tough-love approach when it came to Du Xuejing and Du Yi. Hearing Du Heng’s critique, she chimed in, admonishing Du Xuejing not to let it go to her head and to remain humble. If Wu Shengnan hadn’t tactfully intervened, the girl probably would have lost her appetite for dinner that day.

After dinner, Du Heng took the four of them on a leisurely stroll around the Capital, allowing his Sister-in-law, who had been busy since her arrival, to finally see the city’s nightscape. It wasn’t until around nine o’clock in the evening, when Du Xuejing’s Dormitory was about to lock its doors, that Du Heng sent her back. Then, he, Zhang Sumei, and Wu Shengnan headed home.

Just as they reached their doorstep, they were surprised to see the Gu family, whom they had met at noon.

Du Heng’s eyebrows twitched. He couldn’t help but marvel; he had no idea what the Gu family did for a living, but their influence was truly formidable. They had managed to find his new home the very day he moved in.

Now that the guests were at his door, Du Heng understood their purpose and, without any pretense or delay, invited them inside.

This was their second visit, Du Heng thought. He should probably take the initiative this time; otherwise, it would be too disrespectful.

However, before he could decide how to take the initiative, the middle-aged man spoke. ”Director Du, I’m truly sorry. We were inconsiderate at noon. This time, we’ve come hoping you could examine my daughter’s face and see if there’s any chance of recovery. I’ve consulted many experts in stroke treatment, and Everyone speaks incredibly highly of you, Director Du, saying you’re the foremost authority in stroke treatment today. They all said that if even you can’t help her, then there’s truly no hope. Please, Director Du, do us the favor of taking a look.”

No sooner had they entered and settled onto the Sofa than Du Heng found himself buried under a pile of lofty compliments from Mr. Gu, almost to the point of being overwhelmed. As Mr. Gu finished speaking, Gu decisively removed her silk scarf.

The moment she removed it, both Du Heng and Wu Shengnan were visibly shocked. Wu Shengnan was stunned. The once-beautiful girl now had the entire left side of her face sagging. Her left Corner of the eye drooped at nearly a thirty-degree angle, and the left half of her face seemed to have lost all elasticity, hanging limply. Her mouth was even more alarmingly distorted: the right side of her lower lip was pulled so far askew it nearly touched the left side of her upper lip, and the edge of her lower lip was alarmingly close to her jawline. Not only was her mouth crooked, but it also drooped, and saliva was visibly pooling at the corner. As a result, there was at least a two-centimeter difference in height between the left and right sides of her face.

How dreadful! Wu Shengnan thought, her heart aching. No wonder she was so reluctant to take off her scarf at the café. This is what she’s become.

Since becoming pregnant, Wu Shengnan’s maternal instincts had begun to surface more strongly. Now, seeing Gu’s condition, she was utterly heartbroken. She moved to sit beside Gu, took her hand, and began to cry. She couldn’t imagine how the once-beautiful girl had endured her current appearance.

Du Heng, however, was shocked for a different reason than Gu’s disfigurement. To be honest, he had seen patients with facial burns so severe that ”disfigured” couldn’t describe them; ”terrifying” was more apt.
