This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Listening to the busy tone from his phone, Du Heng slowly lowered it.

After a moment of thought, he felt he should also step in to help with this matter. If Liao remained in control of the company, Du Heng would have fewer worries and could focus on his own work. However, if someone else took over, he might have to find a new business partner. That would not only be draining but also a waste of time, severely disrupting his plans.

With this in mind, Du Heng began to consider who could assist him.

The first person who came to mind was undoubtedly his father-in-law. But wouldn’t it be overkill for someone of his father-in-law’s caliber to intervene? Was he overestimating Liao Quansheng’s rivals and their industry, or underestimating his father-in-law? No, that wouldn’t do. Du Heng dismissed the idea as soon as it crossed his mind.

Then he thought of Zhuo Mingde, his informal elder martial uncle. But on second thought, that seemed no different from asking his father-in-law. Those young masters were indeed difficult for people like him to handle, but for someone like Zhuo Mingde, it would be like using a cannon to shoot mosquitoes. So, who would be the right person to ask?

As Du Heng mulled it over, the image of his brash brother-in-law, who never yielded to anyone, filled his mind. Wu Shengnan’s brother loved to get involved in things, even if they didn’t concern him, let alone a matter involving his own sister’s husband.

So, as soon as Du Heng explained the situation, his brother-in-law immediately asked for Liao Quansheng’s phone number, saying he wanted to invite him for a meal. Since his brother-in-law was willing to step in, Du Heng gladly agreed and sent Liao Quansheng’s contact information without hesitation.

After tending to his own affairs, Du Heng noticed that the young man from earlier, along with his sister and brother-in-law, hadn’t come in.

Du Heng pursed his lips. After hearing what the young man’s brother-in-law had said, he was reluctant to get involved in the young man’s situation. Being too proactive wasn’t always a good thing.

For the following week, Du Heng stuck to his usual work routine. In his free time, he helped his sister-in-law, Zhang Sumei, clear out her school dormitory and move her belongings to her new house. As for their own upcoming move, Du Heng and Wu Shengnan didn’t have much to pack either, as they had only lived in their dormitory for two months. Zhang Sumei’s idea was for them to hold onto their current dormitory, which would give Du Heng and his wife an extra place to stay. However, neither Wu Shengnan nor Du Heng were inclined to take advantage of such situations. Besides, they had their own money and didn’t want to gain such a reputation. So, Du Heng went to the school’s general affairs office and returned the dormitory key.

The school was also very accommodating. Since Du Heng wasn’t residing in the school’s provided accommodation, they converted the housing benefit into a subsidy, which was added to his salary.

Today, Du Heng and Wu Shengnan had both taken the day off. They were preparing to bid farewell to the one-bedroom apartment they had inhabited for two months, carrying the last of their belongings to their new home.

Just as they reached their dormitory door and opened it, they saw several people blocking the entrance. These individuals had their hands raised mid-air, as if they were about to knock.

With a quick glance, Du Heng noticed that these people bore a resemblance to Wu Shengnan’s family in their demeanor, though with a slight difference. Wu Shengnan’s family possessed a certain sharpness. Whether it was her father, Wu Shengnan herself, or even the patriarch of the family, they all carried themselves with an unwavering, upright posture. The individuals before him, however, seemed a bit more refined, exuding a cultured air. Yet, both groups shared the same strong, imposing aura.

One thing stood out: at the back of the group was a person with a silk scarf wrapped around their face. Although it wasn’t particularly hot and the scarf was thin, it was wrapped quite snugly.

”Is this Leader Wu’s residence?” the middle-aged man leading the group asked after a slight pause, looking at Du Heng and Wu Shengnan, who were laden with bags.

Du Heng was taken aback that they were looking for Wu Shengnan. He quickly stepped back. ”I’m so sorry, we’re in the middle of moving. It’s a mess. Please, come in.”

Turning his head, he called out to Wu Shengnan, who was behind him, ”Honey, someone’s here for you.”

The group didn’t stand on ceremony and walked straight into the room.

Inside, apart from an old-fashioned wooden sofa, there seemed to be nowhere else to sit. Fortunately, it was an old-fashioned wooden sofa, so it was still usable for sitting.

But the people who entered were visibly surprised. They knew Du Heng and Wu Shengnan were moving, but they hadn’t expected the place to be so empty.

However, they reacted quickly, especially the young man accompanying them. He was remarkably swift, taking the bags from Wu Shengnan and Zhang Sumei’s hands. He smiled and said, ”Perfect timing! Let us help Leader Wu move these things down first. We can talk after we’re done.”

Without waiting for a reply, he picked up the items and headed out the door.

The middle-aged man also smiled. ”We’re truly sorry to disturb you. If there’s anything we can do to help, please let us know. We can all pitch in.”

Du Heng was a bit bewildered, and so was Wu Shengnan, as she didn’t recognize any of them.

However, Wu Shengnan’s eyes scanned the group and settled on the person with the scarf. She looked intently for a few moments, then asked uncertainly, ”Classmate Gu?”

Classmate Gu? Who’s that? Du Heng was still puzzled.

But the middle-aged man replied, ”Leader Wu and my daughter are indeed good friends. You recognized her even like this.”

He then looked at the person beside him wrapped in the scarf. ”We’re indoors now. You can take off your scarf and greet your classmate.”

However, the person in the scarf didn’t respond to the middle-aged man, instead pulling the scarf a little tighter.

Upon seeing this, Du Heng suddenly had a thought: these people were likely here under the pretext of visiting Wu Shengnan; their main purpose might be to see him. Looking at the woman’s posture, had she suffered burns, cuts, or did she have a large, conspicuous birthmark on her face?

While he was lost in these conjectures, Wu Shengnan had already approached the woman in the scarf and asked softly, ”Classmate Gu, what happened to you?”

Even though Wu Shengnan asked, the woman in the scarf remained silent.

At that moment, the young man who had walked to the door suggested, ”Let’s move the things downstairs first.”

The middle-aged man also quickly stepped in to smooth things over, urging everyone to help move the items.

There wasn’t much, just a few bags of clothes and daily necessities.

After loading everything into the car, instead of heading straight to their new house, Du Heng took the visitors to a coffee shop at the school, where they found a relatively secluded corner to sit.

It was during the drive that Du Heng learned from Wu Shengnan that this Classmate Gu was the student who had suffered a stroke in class.

Looking at her current condition, she didn’t seem to have any motor impairments, which indicated that the treatment had been appropriate and timely. But the scarf on her head made Du Heng realize that this woman probably had a residual symptom: facial paralysis.

Once everyone was settled and the conversation began to flow, Du Heng’s suspicion was quickly confirmed.

The middle-aged man gave a bitter smile. ”Director Du, it was truly presumptuous of us to show up unannounced today. My daughter’s situation is quite delicate; she’s very uncomfortable in crowded places right now, so we had to visit you this way. I hope you don’t mind.”

Du Heng glanced at Wu Shengnan. Seeing her gentle nod, he said softly, ”It’s no problem at all, Mr. Gu. Please don’t worry about it. Classmate Gu and my wife are classmates. I’ll certainly help if I can. However, Mr. Gu, please tell me what happened first, so I can get a better understanding.”

The middle-aged man sighed heavily. ”After my daughter fainted at school last time, she received timely medical attention, and no issues were apparent at first. But after a few days, her facial features, such as her eyes and the corners of her mouth, gradually began to deform. For instance, her eyelids started drooping, and her lower lip began to skew to the left. The doctor diagnosed it as neurogenic facial paralysis. Initially, she took a lot of medicine, but it had no effect at all. Then, we sought out many traditional Chinese medicine experts. We tried various methods, like Acupuncture treatment and electric shock therapy. However, not only did these treatments prove ineffective, but her condition also worsened. Now, the entire left side of her face is drooping.”
