Chapter 377: Chapter 46: Thoughts on Fishing

Fish meat, not low in nutritional value.

It can also supplement some nutrients and trace elements that crocodiles don’t have.

As a side dish, it’s quite good.

For Chen Wen, a survivor born into a fishing family, fishing is as simple as drawing water.

Therefore, looking at the fish drifting in the Kuanduo River, Chen Wen’s fisherman’s heart slowly revived.

But now is not the right time for fishing.

Chen Wen thought for a moment, the tools at hand could only make a simple fishing rod.

That means using wood as the rod, weaving reed into fishing lines, and grinding crocodile bones or teeth into barbed hooks.

It would be laborious, and whether he could catch any fish is uncertain.

So, let the fisherman’s heart settle down again!

Now entering the stage is—the net fisherman’s heart!

Riding on the hippo, Chen Wen’s chuunibyou soul fades away.

”Do you know what fish are in the water?”

Chen Wen asked the hippo.

Fish?

The hippo wasn’t very clear on this concept.

Nile crocodile, that was its old neighbor.

Since gaining intelligence, it understood what its old neighbor was called.

But it still didn’t have the concept of fish.

After thinking for a while, the hippo snorted: ”What’s a fish?”

Chen Wen pointed to the fish in the water and said, ”It’s these things.”

The highly near-sighted hippo buried its head to look for a while, then said: ”Ah, it’s them, I don’t know what they are, but I remember many different little dots.”

It seems that the fish species in the Kuanduo River do have some variety.

Chen Wen thought.

He vaguely remembered the fisheries information he had seen from Namibia.

Here, it’s mainly marine and coastal fishing, while inland fisheries exist but aren’t very developed.

However, inland tilapia still occupies a significant portion of exports.

In Caprivi, locals also have the habit of fishing for tilapia to eat.

Therefore, in this river, the number of tilapia is surely considerable.

Tilapia can actually be called African carp.

In Chen Wen’s view, this fish is basically a creature that shares the table with janitors.

In Hua Country, most people’s impression of tilapia might be that rather magical joke.

What to eat in the morning?

Tilapia~

But in fact, this fish has a strong ability to survive and adapt.

They can survive in both fresh and saltwater environments.

Their tolerance to low oxygen is also stronger than most fish.

The main thing is they’re omnivorous, they eat everything, and they eat a lot.

Once they start overpopulating in a closed environment, it’s like holding it in for three days at the toilet—you can’t stop them!

However, the reason why this fish doesn’t have the same notorious reputation as janitors.

Is entirely because they are edible!

And delicious!

Nutritional!

In official terms: Tilapia has delicious meat, with tightly structured muscle fibers, few intermuscular thorns, rich in protein, amino acids, and minerals.

They were even listed by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization as one of the important promoted aquaculture fish species.

Hua Country introduced tilapia to raise them for meat and occasionally for export.

But after decades of development, Hua Country has become the world’s largest tilapia farming nation.

Even forming a complete industrial chain from seed breeding, breeding production, processing, to export.

To be honest, a fish originating from Africa being an important export fish in distant East Asia—Hua Country exports about 500,000 tons of tilapia every year.

It’s enough to show how tasty and nutritious this thing is.

In the Chuan Province of Hua Country, in Panzhihua City.

People have even developed a dish called salt edge pickled fish.

This fish was introduced in 1958.

But in just these decades, so many cooking methods have been developed, only in Hua Country.

...

Back to the point.

With the backing of Hua Country’s foodies, Chen Wen thinks this fish is definitely more comfortable to eat than Egyptian catfish.

And compared to Egyptian catfish, if he had to choose, he would also choose tilapia.

But speaking of which, catching tilapia is a problem.

This fish lives in the mid-lower layers of the water, and fishing is the easier way to catch them.

But for Chen Wen, fishing is quite difficult, so he ruled out this method.

Hand-catching isn’t feasible either.

This fish lives in the mid-lower layers, and to catch them by hand, one must dive to fish.

But in the water, competing with tilapia in agility.

Chen Wen feels he would only do that if he had a fever.

Of course, there might be some skilled people who can do it to such an extent.

Then there’s trap fishing.

But trap fishing doesn’t seem to work either.

Because tilapia is omnivorous with a broad diet, from meaty carrion to vegetative plankton, there’s nothing they won’t eat.

So after setting the trap, what bait to use is a big problem.

Using meat bait, you’re more likely to attract tigerfish and sharp-toothed characins that prefer eating meat.

Many people might not know about tigerfish.

But mention the water tigerfish, also known as piranha, and many people would know.

In the Kuanduo River, there are some tigerfish existing, but they aren’t water tigerfish.

Rather they are some freshwater subspecies under tigerfish.

Chen Wen had eaten a grilled tigerfish during a meal with the show’s crew.

The taste was alright.

While sharp-toothed characins are fierce carnivorous fish.

This thing originated in South America, but as the world connected, someone unknowingly brought it to Africa.

It also holds a certain share in Namibia’s fish exports.

Second only to tilapia in freshwater fish production.

Therefore, in Chen Wen’s view, these three types of fish are the easiest to catch.

Tigerfish and sharp-toothed characins can be drawn by setting traps with meat bait.

There’s a chance to catch them.

But tilapia...

Chen Wen thought for a long time until the hippo became a bit impatient, still unable to come up with a better method.

”Let’s go, let’s go.”

Chen Wen patted the hippo’s body, deciding not to think any further.

When the car gets to the mountain, there will be a way; if not, he’ll make a fishing rod.

Or go find Kaelian and get rid of her.

Because among the three items Kaelian carried, there was a fishing rod.

She seems well aware that during the time before the dry season, the Kuanduo River has quite a few fish living in it.

But as the dry season approaches, the river water evaporates.

Many fish will die in the dry season, and only some can survive until the next rainy season, when they spawn and bring the Kuanduo River back to life again.

However, this also means that the fish in the Kuanduo River aren’t very big, except for catfish.

This highly survival-adapted thing is an exception, as most Egyptian catfish can live for several rainy seasons.

...

Accompanied by the hippo breaking the water’s surface.

The scenery around gradually changed.

Chen Wen noticed an increasing number of animals on the riverbank.

Where he was now was the plains west of the shelter, and a little further ahead was Yoshikawa Feng’s survival area.

However, Chen Wen wasn’t thinking about bothering Yoshikawa Feng, as it was too much trouble.

He might as well wait for Yoshikawa Feng to come, and it’s easier to counterattack him.

Or wait for Feng Zhong to come and join forces.

But just as Chen Wen was thinking about this, as the hippo slowly stopped.

Chen Wen noticed the hippo had brought him near a hippo herd.

”What’s up?”

Chen Wen asked.

The hippo’s emotions were complex.

It leisurely said, ”This was the herd I belonged to before; the hippo coming over there is the one that drove me out.”
