Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 358: Chapter 29: Driving Away the Hippo

Watching the hippo pacing beneath the tree, occasionally opening its mouth to roar.

Chen Wen was truly helpless.

”You tell me, why does such a disgusting creature exist in the world?”

”Not only is it big and heavy, but it also sprints fast. The main thing is its skin is thick and smooth, so ordinary long-range weapons can’t harm it.”

”Moreover, this thing is amphibious and has a strong territorial consciousness—wherever it goes becomes its territory.”

Up in the tree, Chen Wen looked at the agitated hippo and said helplessly, ”Bro, I came here first, and you still want to make this your territory?”

”Is that reasonable?”

The hippo roared back in response.

Great, it’s not even a special animal.

Chen Wen scratched his head.

This creature is really disgusting!

But it’s not completely hopeless.

Chen Wen set his eyes on the drone.

He planned to use the drone to divert the hippo.

However, before Chen Wen could take action, the hippo moved first.

Perhaps because it reached its limit, the hippo charged at the tree where Chen Wen was, ramming into it.

The thick tree wouldn’t break from the hippo’s impact.

But it would shake from the collision.

With the trunk shaking, the treehouse where Chen Wen was also started to sway.

Luckily, Chen Wen’s knots were tied quite firmly, and when he was working on the treehouse roof today,

he had woven the reed leaves he picked and dried on the first day into ropes to reinforce the structure.

Though it’s not like a fortress, the treehouse is at least as stable as a mountain.

Therefore, Chen Wen just leaned back slightly to maintain balance and didn’t make any extra movements.

”Bro, there are ten water lilies in the Kuanduo River, and I only picked one. Do you know why?”

Chen Wen grinned as he looked at the agitated hippo below.

After hearing Chen Wen’s voice, the hippo’s body noticeably tensed.

It felt like the creature above was provoking it.

Before the hippo could take any other actions, Chen Wen chuckled and said, ”Haha, because of you, I will pick nine lotuses!”

The hippo went berserk immediately.

It could sense Chen Wen’s provocation.

The already hot-tempered hippo was further instigated.

It started frantically slamming into the tree like mad.

Chen Wen sat steadily in the treehouse, watching the hippo vent its temper.

The big tree he chose would take some effort even for a full-grown African elephant.

Let alone a hippo.

Even if it slammed into it all night, the tree wouldn’t budge.

However, if it continued to ram, the treehouse might be affected.

Chen Wen thought for a moment and decided to use the drone to provoke it.

He expertly controlled the drone, taunting the hippo by making it dive towards the hippo.

But just before reaching the hippo’s large jaws, it abruptly soared.

The hippo was startled by the drone.

Startled, it quickly became enraged.

The hippo switched its attack target and started chasing the low-flying drone.

But its bulky body was the hippo’s biggest obstacle.

Chen Wen nimbly maneuvered the drone, intentionally making it fly near the campfire.

The hippo slammed forward, accidentally entering the fire’s range several times, getting severely scorched.

After being burnt by the campfire twice.

The hippo slowly stopped.

It let out an angry and resentful cry.

But after finishing its cry, the hippo left Chen Wen’s camp without looking back.

Chen Wen followed it with the drone from a distance, not calling it back until the hippo had left the camp and gone to the riverbank to forage.

He got down from the tree and added some wood to the campfire.

Only then did Chen Wen sit down reassured: ”This hippo’s temper isn’t very stubborn. Once it realized it couldn’t do anything to me, it left.”

”Some stubborn hippos would still linger in such situations, but that’s a good thing. It indicates its injury is worse than it seems.”

Chen Wen continued working on wooden spears.

He considered hunting this hippo.

But he’d have to wait until it was weaker.

After finishing, Chen Wen went to the base of the tree to check the traces left by the hippo.

Even if the hippo’s injuries aren’t light, the traces it left are not to be underestimated.

A piece of bark on the tree was directly gouged by the hippo’s tusks.

Chen Wen touched it and clearly felt the indentation left by the hippo.

”If that bit a person’s limb, not to mention tearing through it, it would easily pierce straight through.”

Being cautious in his heart.

The thought of hunting the hippo slightly faded again.

If it doesn’t cause trouble, then let there be temporary peace.

Chen Wen thought silently and went up the tree to sleep.

Meanwhile, by the river.

The agitated hippo was feeding.

But after every bite, it would raise its head and stare blankly for a while.

Occasionally, it turned to look back in the direction where Chen Wen was.

This bizarre behavior caused the nearby Nile crocodiles to move further away.

...

At the camp, seeing Chen Wen safe and the hippo completely gone.

Lin Jiawei let out a long breath and sat back in his chair.

Thank goodness.

The shelter was not only sturdy, but the response was also timely, and the method to distract and expel the hippo was truly eye-opening.

Chen Wen is still the same Chen Wen!

Steady with a touch of flamboyance.

Yoshikawa Feng’s assistant next to him looked displeased.

Chen Wen not being eliminated was undoubtedly the most disappointing outcome for him.

”Ha, just lucky,” said Yoshikawa Feng’s assistant obstinately.

Lin Jiawei sneered: ”Next up, if Yoshikawa Feng doesn’t rely on luck, he will definitely be the first one out!”

”You better start praying tonight, or he will come back here like a dog on the brink of starvation!”

”What kind of nonsense self-abusive survival method is that, relying on initial supplies and stamina to quickly complete survival elements except for food? This survival method has been around for ages, why do you guys love copying everything like some certain folks?”

”Besides copying, isn’t Yoshikawa Feng’s survival method the most luck-dependent out there? If his luck runs out and no animals pass by his traps, how’s he going to survive? Can’t it be purely based on skill?”

”Oh, remember now, you guys seem to love betting on luck, but unfortunately, you’ve never won.”

Lin Jiawei unleashed a barrage of criticism.

He sighed in satisfaction.

The time spent learning from Chen Wen’s sarcasm wasn’t in vain.

Moreover, he now deeply understands why Chen Wen loves the trash-talking segments so much.

Two words—feels good!

Yoshikawa Feng’s assistant’s face turned green.

Being compared to certain folks or called out for relying on luck struck his sore spots.

People around who understood the situation in East Asia laughed at Lin Jiawei’s words.

Containing minimal profanity, the insult was extremely potent.

Yoshikawa Feng’s assistant hummed a few times but truly didn’t know how to counter.

The reality of Chen Wen’s achievement was right there, making any flowery words powerless.

Yoshikawa Feng, oh Yoshikawa Feng.

If you can’t quickly build an advantage, I won’t survive here!

Thought Yoshikawa Feng’s assistant.

...

Under the same night sky.

Looking at the completed shelter.

A hint of pride flashed across Yoshikawa Feng’s face, but his gaunt face truly marred his aura.

Not letting him be proud.

”Tomorrow... go check the traps. If the luck is good and there’s a catch, the situation will turn around!”

Yoshikawa Feng gasped and crawled into the shelter.

After almost three days without eating much, he had entered a weakened state.

But the harvest of these three days was quite considerable.

Steady water source, safe living environment, sturdy treehouse shelter, and a steadily burning campfire.

All survival essentials but stable food have been secured.
