Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 353: Chapter 24: Grilled Crocodile

In wilderness survival cooking, most survivors are actually not too concerned.

Except for a show called ”Wilderness Chef King,” which invited chefs and hunters to survive together and create a large number of delicious dishes.

In most survival reality shows, survivors handle food in a very crude manner.

One method is roasting, and the other is boiling.

Roasting is the most common choice.

Chen Wen had previously used fat to fry meat, which was already a very innovative method.

However, after Du Feng’s research, he discovered that while these two methods are convenient, if there are dangerous predators around, the aroma may attract these dreadful creatures.

He came up with a cooking method that is less likely to attract predators’ attention.

The inspiration came from Beggar’s Chicken.

This method, which involves wrapping food with leaves and mud for baking, locks in the scent tightly.

Moreover, the food cooked this way is not as dry as when directly roasted.

It allows survivors to have a certain water supply.

And this roasting method is also relatively easy to use, not wasting much time.

Therefore, Du Feng researched two methods suitable for wilderness survival to make Beggar’s Chicken.

This was the result after he took a trip to Changshu City, Su Province, the birthplace of Beggar’s Chicken, for learning and exchange.

He even referred to the method of making roasted piglet.

According to Du Feng,

These two methods take into account convenience, safety, deliciousness, and balanced nutrition.

During a gathering before the New Year, Du Feng shared these two methods with Chen Wen.

Chen Wen was very moved.

Regardless of whether the method is effective or not, Du Feng’s intention was very sincere.

”Everyone may have noticed that this time I haven’t processed the scales and outer skin of the crocodile together.”

Chen Wen tapped the hard shell of the Nile crocodile and said, ”This is because I have a new cooking method that I plan to try, which was told to me by a friend who is an excellent chef.”

To be safe, Chen Wen did not directly mention Du Feng’s name.

In case of failure, he felt Du Feng might be affected.

The show is to be broadcast on domestic online platforms.

Therefore, Chen Wen decided to report Du Feng’s name after the dish was successfully made.

”As is well known, in Hua Country, a very famous martial arts novelist, Mr. Jin Yong, once recorded a recipe in his famous work ’The Legend of the Condor Heroes,’ called Beggar’s Chicken.”

Chen Wen said slowly, ”The cooking method my friend told me about was inspired by Beggar’s Chicken.”

”He told me two schemes, one complex and one simple.”

”The simple method involves rubbing seasoning inside the food, wrapping the outside with non-toxic leaves or lotus leaves, then covering with mud and baking it in a fire pit.”

”The complex method requires digging a pit, putting certain stones in, first burning a fire above the stones to heat them, and after the bonfire extinguishes, using the same treatment method, but after placing the food in the pit, covering it with mud for insulation, then baking.”

”Both methods have their pros and cons, but today, we still have plenty of time.”

Chen Wen glanced at the sky and said, ”Therefore, I plan to use the complex method to roast most of the Nile crocodile’s meat, and leave one leg to be roasted using the simple method to let everyone see the effects of both methods.”

He started working right away.

Chen Wen took the javelin and intended to disassemble one of the crocodile’s legs.

This work was rather troublesome.

After all, a javelin, though sharp, is not as handy as a knife.

Darn, it’s really inconvenient not to have brought a knife!

Chen Wen couldn’t help but think.

With difficulty, he used the javelin’s tip to detach the left hind leg of the Nile crocodile.

Chen Wen weighed it; this left hind leg was very heavy, certainly enough for dinner tonight.

This Nile crocodile was relatively heavy, probably close to 200 kilograms.

Chen Wen tried to lift it. Although he could, it was quite strenuous.

This was even with the attribute enhancement.

Taking a deep breath, he hoisted the Nile crocodile and began walking toward the shelter.

This scene surprised quite a few of the assisting players again.

Although strength does not represent the strength or weakness of survival ability, a survivor with giant strength is enough to make everyone cautious.

...

With difficulty, Chen Wen brought the Nile crocodile near the shelter, panting as he laid it down to the side.

With a muffled thud,

the Nile crocodile slammed into the ground, flattening a patch of vegetation.

”It can’t be placed too close, let’s roast it here!”

Chen Wen said and planned to dig a pit.

Digging a pit was relatively simple.

Chen Wen used the other end of the javelin to loosen the soil and then dug in with his hands.

In about a few dozen minutes, he had dug a large pit that could fit the whole Nile crocodile.

He filled the pit bottom with the stones he found, then put in firewood.

Transferring the fire source, as the firewood began to burn, the stones underneath gradually increased in temperature.

Taking this time, Chen Wen started processing the Nile crocodile.

After washing his hands, he evenly spread the bright red Indian spices inside the Nile crocodile’s body.

Externally, he wrapped it with nearby tree leaves.

Chen Wen didn’t recognize these trees, but he was very sure these are not among the few types of posionous wood found in the Caprivi Strip.

With the underbelly facing up, he covered it with leaves and smeared mud over it.

Turning it over, the back with its thick scales was similarly covered with leaves, and mud was applied over it.

By the time the entire Nile crocodile turned into a mud statue, the bonfire had just gone out.

Chen Wen immediately dragged the Nile crocodile into the pit, letting the ash cover the mud shell of the crocodile.

He placed the Nile crocodile and covered it with soil.

Chen Wen explained the principle of this cooking method: ”It’s about heating the stones below to make them very hot, using the temperature of the stones to bake the Nile crocodile to achieve the roasting effect.”

”Therefore, we must make sure to insulate well.”

Saying this, Chen Wen added more soil.

”This way, the Nile crocodile under the soil is like being in an oven. As the stones’ heat transfers to the Nile crocodile, its meat will be slowly roasted, ensuring moisture while also preventing the escape of aroma. In the Caprivi Strip, it’s considered a quite good cooking method.”

”However, this method takes a long time, and given the size of this Nile crocodile, I feel it’s better to check the situation tomorrow morning.”

”Tonight, our main course is still the Nile crocodile’s hind leg.”

Chen Wen clapped his hands and looked at the processed crocodile hind leg not far away.

The hind leg had skipped the seasoning application, and Chen Wen took it by the leg, throwing it directly into the campfire.

Chen Wen added some firewood, and amidst the roaring flames, the hind leg of the Nile crocodile was roasted by the high heat.

The fragrant aroma was supposed to escape, but it was securely locked inside by the leaves and mud.

Even sitting by the campfire, Chen Wen couldn’t smell a bit of the meat’s fragrance.

”I have to say, in a place with relatively abundant wild animals, this method is really quite practical.”

Chen Wen couldn’t help but say.

However, whether this method can be used long-term depends on if the roasted meat is tasty.

Feeling the meat was about to be cooked,

Chen Wen used the javelin to poke the crocodile leg out.

He put it aside to cool for a while, and when it felt cool enough,

Chen Wen picked up a stone and cracked open the hard mud shell.

Waves of meat aroma mixed with the freshness of the leaves slowly wafted out.

Chen Wen’s eyes lit up.

Hmm~!

Perfect, a rare delicacy!

He reached out and opened the steaming leaves.

A crocodile leg roasted to be quite juicy appeared before Chen Wen.

Without minding the heat, Chen Wen promptly picked up the crocodile leg.
