Chapter 1351: Chapter 1350: Southern Song: Modern Warfare Released

With the time it took to drink a cup of tea, Fang Zheng wiped out more than ten thousand Jin soldiers, though they weren’t all killed. Although the Meteor Storm swept across most of the battlefield, some did escape the net. These either surrendered directly or fled in terror.

In fact, because the turn of events was too sudden, the Jin soldiers didn’t even know how their cavalry was annihilated. It’s known that the Jin soldiers are unbeatable if their numbers exceed ten thousand. Yet here they were, wiped out in the time it takes to sip a cup of tea, and what’s more peculiar is that they had no idea how the opponents accomplished it!

This indeed terrified the Jin commanders, so much that when Yue Fei led the army to the gates of Luoyang City, the Jin commanders shut the gates tight, as if prepared to hold out until the end of days... But who on earth is the real invader here!!

Fang Zheng, however, seemed well-prepared for this.

”Looks like these people are resolved to defend the walls until the end of time.”

From afar, staring at the tightly closed gates of Luoyang City, Fang Zheng exchanged glances with Yue Fei and then chuckled.

”Unfortunately, it’s useless...”

”The Celestial Immortal’s words are absolutely right, it’s time for us to act and let those Jin people truly witness our might!”

Upon hearing Fang Zheng’s words, Yue Fei nodded, then he turned to the signal officer beside him.

”Send the signal!!”

”———Whoosh!!!”

Soon, a flare shot into the sky, bursting forth. Seeing the flare, the Jin soldiers naturally became extremely tense, gripping their bows and arrows, watching the horizon. However, contrary to their expectations, after several dozen minutes, they still hadn’t seen their imagined, fully armed soldiers coming from the other side of the horizon. Instead, the other side remained calm, as if nothing had happened at all.

What are these Han people doing? Are they celebrating the New Year out of boredom?

Just as the Jin soldiers were perplexed, they suddenly felt a shadow loom over their heads.

What’s happening? These Jin soldiers looked up in astonishment toward the sky, and then—they widened their eyes in fear.

Dozens of gigantic white Zeppelins emerged from the clouds, beginning to slowly descend toward Luoyang City. The Jin soldiers didn’t know what they were; quite a few were so scared they kneeled and prayed. At that moment, however, the white Zeppelins halted their descent, and then, the hatches on the bottom opened, releasing numerous black dots falling from the sky.

”Boom!!!”

Accompanied by thunderous roars, bombs whistled down, striking the walls, sparking blossoms of fire in an instant. Shards of broken metal flew mercilessly and cruelly, mangling the Jin soldiers.

”Enemy attack! Enemy attack!!”

Now, the Jin soldiers reacted, shouting loudly but to no avail. Some desperate Jin soldiers took up bows and arrows, trying to attack the white Zeppelins. But even though they exerted themselves, they couldn’t hit those white Zeppelins. Instead, the soldiers on the walls were directly blown to pieces by the descending bombs.

If the construction of the flying boats has a bit of the ”Immortal Hero” flavor, then these bombs are entirely created by Fang Zheng using the existing technology and craftsmanship of this world. Certainly, devising sufficiently stable and potent gunpowder was somewhat labor-intensive, but aside from that, whether it’s the ”bomb” casing, fuses, or other elements, they were basically made using existing materials in this world.

In fact, historically, the Southern Song Dynasty was also the first to utilize gunpowder to create ”land mines,” then called ”bomb cannons,” primarily used against the Jin cavalry. Now, having the Zeppelins, Fang Zheng naturally improved them further, turning them into bombs.

And the Zeppelins transformed directly into bombers... Since only they possessed Zeppelins in this era, air superiority wasn’t a concern.

After a round of bombings collapsed the Jin soldiers’ defenses on Luoyang’s city walls, the Zeppelins quickly descended. Then ropes lowered from the hatches, allowing fully-equipped soldiers to rapidly descend onto the walls. Meanwhile, soldiers armed with bows and crossbows appeared on the deck, striking the remaining Jin soldiers around.

Simultaneously, the soldiers landing on the walls quickly ignited flares, sending signals.

”Good!”

Seeing the flares, Yue Fei gave a strong pat on his horse’s back from afar.

”Let’s go, reclaim Luoyang today!!”

”Yes indeed.”

Hearing this, Fang Zheng couldn’t help but chuckle lightly.

”If General Yue could push a bit harder, perhaps you’d be the one standing on the walls now.”

”This... hahaha......”

Facing Fang Zheng’s jest, Yue Fei showed a slightly embarrassed expression.

”There’s no choice; after all, my dear Yue... hahaha......”

Watching Yue Fei like this before him, Fang Zheng also laughed and shook his head. To be honest, he didn’t expect this hero who resisted the Jin would have such a fatal weakness.

Fear of heights!

Originally, according to Fang Zheng’s plan, a commander like Yue Fei should directly oversee the battle from the Zeppelin. After all, commanding from a high vantage point allows for broader vision and easier issuance of orders. Although this world doesn’t have radio communication, using flares to send signals isn’t unachievable. In fact, Yue Fei did think the same.

But neither Fang Zheng nor Yue Fei expected that when Yue Fei stepped onto the Zeppelin, not long after it ascended, watching the ground below, Yue Fei turned pale, feeling weak in the legs, dizzy and lightheaded, almost as if he was about to pass out... Though after that, Yue Fei tried several times, but...

How to say... Maybe some people are just inherently afraid of heights...

The current tactics naturally resulted from Fang Zheng and Yue Fei’s deliberations. Though Fang Zheng hadn’t fought battles in modern times, he played numerous war games. It’s just that modern cities no longer have city walls, so he and Yue Fei had to discuss for a long time to tailor this strategy.

To put it simply, it involves securing air superiority, launching ground bombings, forcibly landing, occupying target areas, and then cooperating with the rear forces to sweep away all resistance!

Welcome to the battlefield of ’Southern Song: Modern Warfare’!

Despite the existence of firearms in the Southern Song era, their range wasn’t far, at least ineffective from the Zeppelins, and manufacturing modern firearms wasn’t time feasible. Thus, currently, the Zeppelins are equipped mostly with safe and reliable ranged weapons like bows and crossbows, which seem adequate for now.

After taking the city gates, Yue Fei led the army straight in, with the Zeppelins providing air support. And when have the Jin soldiers ever seen such air-ground cooperation tactics? All they could do was flee in terror, and within less than a day, Yue Fei reclaimed the enormous Luoyang City!

With the aid of the Zeppelins, in the face of Yue Fei’s led army, the Jin soldiers no longer gained any advantage, forced into a retreat. It took merely two or three months to recapture most of the territories originally occupied by the Jin soldiers!

However, just as Fang Zheng and Yue Fei planned to eliminate the Jin people in one fell swoop, a decree from behind left them dumbfounded.

”...... General Yue Fei and Immortal Master Fang Qing achieved great success in resisting the Jin, specially summoned back to the capital to receive rewards, such a decree......”

Staring at the decree before them, Fang Zheng and Yue Fei exchanged wide-eyed glances.

”Celestial Immortal, what do you make of this......”

”I think the Song Dynasty is screwed!”

Fang Zheng snorted coldly, he and Yue Fei were no fools. Throughout history and across the world, Divine Speed in warfare is an eternal truth. Initially, Fang Zheng planned to sweep away the Jin people in one breath, then take out the Mongolian Yuan, Western Xia, and Western Liao......

Instead, they haven’t finished the war, and now the rear wants to issue a decree inviting them to receive rewards?

Looks like the Southern Song ruling class is corrupt down to the bone......

”Forget it, don’t rush, I’ll have Aya investigate; there’s definitely a problem with this sudden decree coming from behind...”

Fang Zheng waved his hand, comforting Yue Fei, and not long after, Aya walked in.

”Greetings to the Celestial Immortal.”

”Ah, Aya, what did you find out?”

”Yes.”

Aya nodded and began to speak.

”I got some information from that Master earlier, it’s said that this time the reason Your Majesty summons the Celestial Immortal and General back is because......”

”Because of what?”

”Because... the abbot from Jinji Temple, Master Baozhi, approached Your Majesty saying the Celestial Immortal and General are using sorcery, taking life extensively, which disrupts the harmony......”

”These bald guys, what an outrage!!”

Upon hearing this, Yue Fei slammed the table fiercely, while Fang Zheng’s expression also darkened.

”As expected, these Bald Guys aren’t any good... given this..... General Yue, let’s head back to the capital and see what these Bald Guys intend to do?!”
