System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

Zhang Tiesheng’s glasses were stylish, and he had a refined demeanor. But after listening to Lu Cheng, he grinned somewhat lewdly and lowered his voice: ”Want me to take you to try some stuff?”

Lu Cheng’s eyes flickered: ”Brother Zhang, aren’t you afraid to play around like this with your wife around?”

Zhang Tiesheng insisted on maintaining his position as the boss, folding his hands in front of his belly: ”A man’s night out is a proper thing, as long as Xiao Lu, you are willing to go!~”

”Leave it to your Brother Zhang, I assure you I’ll find a few who look good and perform well.”

Lu Cheng had heard of people like this before: originally very romantic, but once that image was shattered, they become very promiscuous for a while.

Of course, Lu Cheng didn’t think Zhang Tiesheng was that type. Most likely, he was just a smooth-talking playboy only interested in witty comebacks: ”Brother Zhang, I admit defeat; I can’t outlast you.”

Zhang Tiesheng looked as if he understood everything: ”Xiao Lu, talking like that is no fun. I’ve even planned it out, and now you’re saying you won’t go.”

Lu Cheng yawned.

Zhang Tiesheng lowered his head to check his phone again, holding it to his ear for a while.

Suddenly, Zhang Tiesheng said: ”Xiao Lu, what on earth are you thinking? You’re so skilled, yet you keep it hidden. Can you really hold it in?”

This was the point Zhang Tiesheng was genuinely curious about.

From what he heard from brothers in the urology department, Zhang Tiesheng could almost conclude that Lu Cheng’s skills were indeed quite strong.

But surely it’s not just today that he became strong. Yet it seemed that the current Lu Cheng was not like he used to be. He wouldn’t say anything or do anything, playing dumb even though he clearly understood.

Can he really hold it in?

”Brother Zhang, what did you say?” Lu Cheng, feeling a bit sleepy, had just yawned and didn’t quite catch Zhang Tiesheng’s words.

Zhang Tiesheng repeated it.

”What’s there to hold in?” Lu Cheng replied with a smile.

Zhang Tiesheng then made a joke, breaking the barrier: ”So you just heartlessly stand by and watch people die without helping?”

During shifts, encountering so many different patients, Zhang Tiesheng didn’t believe there was no suitable occasion for Lu Cheng to act.

”Brother Zhang, you’re like a big brother to me, stop trying to trap me.”

”Some things just shouldn’t be done, same with surgeries, they require the right circumstances and timing.” Lu Cheng took another sip of his coffee.

Wondering if any patients would come tonight, Lu Cheng chatted idly with Zhang Tiesheng, passing the time without any specific purpose, feeling a bit sleepy.

”What do you mean?” Zhang Tiesheng didn’t grasp Lu Cheng’s words right away.

Lu Cheng’s tone was casual: ”If it’s not part of our hospital’s role, we shouldn’t blindly get involved.”

”Showing off is not suitable for our hospital. We are just a County Hospital; if you do well, people think it’s expected, but if you fail, they say you’re audacious.”

”A severed limb is okay, after all, it’s just a hand, not a life.”

”No one expects the County Hospital to save patients that even city hospitals can’t treat.”

”Every hospital has its own role.”

”Moreover, such things are hard for peers to believe, why waste effort convincing the patient’s families…”

Like today, Du Qiang’s cousin was definitely in danger, and if not handled well, it could be a matter of life and death.

If it weren’t for Du Qiang backing him up, Lu Cheng wouldn’t take the initiative to try and save lives.

Who asks you to perform Blind Hemostasis Skill at the County Hospital???

Does medicine even recognize terms like Blind Hemostasis Technique, operation without visibility?

Certainly not, there is no formal documentation of it anywhere.

If you bring it into a top-notch unit like Xiangya Hospital, you’re impressive; Huaxi Hospital and the like have their main responsibility in saving lives.

You can do something a bit unconventional there.

But at a County Hospital?

Lu Cheng wanted to be a doctor, but not noble enough to risk his career for saving lives.

This isn’t an issue that even extraordinary surgery can identify.

Zhang Tiesheng thought for quite a while, then concluded: ”You’re afraid of causing trouble?”

Lu Cheng nodded.

”Then why did you choose to make a move today?” Zhang Tiesheng asked.

”If Director Du is willing to stake his reputation, then even if it backfires, I’ll just have to accept my bad luck.”

Lu Cheng laughed: ”Director Du is the head of general surgery, how could he easily risk his own reputation?”

”Don’t you agree?”

With this, Zhang Tiesheng found common ground with Lu Cheng and spoke frankly: ”Then aren’t you afraid people will say you only use your skills for those with connections?”

Lu Cheng’s stance was simple, if a colleague backed him, he’d even risk bringing one down with him.

Without such backing, Lu Cheng would turn a blind eye.

Though Lu Cheng didn’t say it directly, that was clearly his meaning.

”Who would pay attention to a small doctor like me?”

Lu Cheng continued: ”Moreover, Brother Zhang, do you think regular patients and their families would trust me? If I don’t give them enough assurance, would they agree to let me operate?”

”These life-and-death matters aren’t clarified just with conversations and signatures.”

”Things not appearing in guidelines, textbooks, or literature—even with a ninety percent success rate, I wouldn’t bet the ten percent failure would be lawsuit-free.”

”I am just a minor figure, can’t afford such high trial-and-error costs.”

”Brother Zhang, I’m going to take a nap, feeling a bit tired.” Lu Cheng ended the discussion.

Though these words are reasonable, they are sensitive, and if misunderstood, someone could easily label you as stubborn.
