Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

Chapter 294: Chapter 294: Go for Instant Messaging

After tasting a sip of tea, Yang Yu moistened his throat and began to speak:

”Magicians communicate with each other by relying on crystal balls.

High-level magicians can project their own images directly onto the other person’s crystal ball for real-time communication.

Whereas slightly less capable magicians can only rely on text.

From what I understand, it’s time-consuming and laborious for low-level magicians to pass messages to each other.

Once a text message is sent from one crystal ball to another, it cannot be changed.

To avoid misunderstandings as much as possible, each input must be carefully checked, which greatly reduces the efficiency of communication.

That’s exactly why you thought of stuffing emoticon packs into crystal balls, making them part of the crystal ball.

When someone wants to communicate, they just directly pull up an emoticon pack from the crystal ball.

This significantly reduces the barriers to communication between low-level magicians.”

Fuer didn’t deny it; this had been his goal from the beginning.

He didn’t have much magic talent and understood the pains of the low-magic-power population well, so he could think of using emoticons to replace text.

”I’m just standing on the shoulders of giants.”

With his hand resting on the teacup, the reflection of the tea revealed Fuer’s helpless expression.

”People like me with scant magic are the main theme of the All Things Library, and there will certainly be thousands of others suffering the same annoyances, looking for ways to reduce the barriers to long-distance communication.

There have been historical attempts to engrave commonly used phrases in crystal balls to be summoned when needed.

But due to the magic technology of the time, it wasn’t realized.

Now, the ability to project images owes a great deal to the development of magic, allowing us to create the emoticon pack crystal balls.”

Yang Yu tossed a few biscuits into his mouth and smiled,

”There’s nothing wrong with standing on the shoulders of giants.

Through the long river of history, there may have been many people who had the same idea as you, but you are the first to take concrete action and succeed. You should be proud of yourself.

But you can’t become overly proud and end up stagnant and making no progress.

Though we now have emoticon pack crystal balls, many people definitely don’t want to be limited to communicating with just emoticons.

In urgent situations, the usefulness of emoticon packs is minimal and using entertainment emoticons in such scenarios seems quite inappropriate.

We need an even more timely, rapid, and convenient communication tool.

Only then can we achieve accurate and error-free exchanges of information.

Rather than blindly expanding the number of emoticon packs, allowing users to search through a huge library to find the one they want, consider emoticon packs a pure byproduct.

The real cake that needs to grow bigger and stronger is instant communication, letting people freely express their thoughts, and allowing them to communicate with whomever they want, whenever and wherever they want.”

Fuer also knew this, but...

”Actually, I’ve had similar ideas to yours, but this path is full of thorns.

The idea of unrestricted communication between people is quite fantastical.

First of all, everyone has different amounts of magic power storage, and it’s simply impossible to bridge this gap.

People with insufficient talent cannot skillfully use a crystal ball...”

”Why limit ourselves to crystal balls? Why not introduce a new type of instant communication tool? If you’re the first to create such a tool, you could turn the whole industry upside down and become the rule-maker.”

Interrupting Fuer, Yang Yu looked at the round crystal ball on the tea table with disdain in his eyes.

”I’ve always thought that communicating via crystal balls is just plain stupid.

A crystal ball of that size is not at all convenient to carry around.

Besides, civilians have no way of using magic to communicate, which limits the use of crystal balls to magicians.

As you said, even among different magicians there are communication barriers.

In my view, a crystal ball is merely a tool that showcases a person’s power indirectly and is far from what we ideally want in a tool.”

Crystal balls have been a communication tool passed down for many generations, and now Yang Yu explicitly stated that crystal balls, aside from being used to show off by big shots, are useless.

This left Fuer astounded,

”Then what do you think could completely replace crystal balls?”

”I think it should be small enough, square, and fit right into a pocket, so that even ordinary people can easily carry it. People like me who can’t use magic should also be able to use it effortlessly.

Just by tapping the screen, two people far apart can communicate whenever and wherever.”

Hearing Yang Yu’s description, Fuer furrowed his brows,

”Can such a thing really be created? If it does not have the support of magic power, what does it need to operate?”

”Well, it could still use magic power or it could switch to some other kind of energy.

In this world, there’s already technology capable of storing magic power.

So can’t we make that device I mentioned modular?

Could there be a specific part that stores magic power, continuously supplying it to maintain the communication tool’s operation?”

Fuer pondered for a moment, then said:

”Are you talking about a magic power storage device? I’ve seen such a thing in books; it’s one of the necessary tools to keep machinery running.

But those devices are too large, and even the part that powers a magic lamp is at least the size of an egg and spherical, nowhere near your square description.

The technology for storing magic power is complex, and to store and then extract it for use is truly too difficult for us.”

”It may be so for us, but that doesn’t mean others can’t do it.

Your emoticon pack crystal balls were a result of a collaboration with Tico, weren’t they?

Try looking for someone even more capable.

Besides, what progress comes from standing still?

Only by going forward can we break through.

You know about magic scrolls and magic power storage devices; can’t you combine the two to create a small and portable magic battery?

With a magic battery, even someone who doesn’t know how to use magic would be able to use our communication tools.”

Fuer fell silent for a moment, then quickly raised a new question concerning the issue of collecting magic power. If too many people were to use the device Yang Yu spoke of, replenishing the magic power would become a huge problem.

Facing this question, Yang Yu indicated that manual work was only a temporary measure. Once enough wealth had been accumulated, technology could be developed to continuously extract magic from the air, creating various devices to supply the communication tool with magic power.
