Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

”Do you see a problem with it?” Nathan Fawcett asked, looking at her in confusion.

Anne Sutton said, ”You didn’t mention this before. Besides this, did Nathan leave you anything else?”

”What were you hoping he’d leave?” Nathan Fawcett raised an eyebrow.

’Does this woman, who got together with Charles Prescott the moment I was gone, really deserve anything from me?’

Anne Sutton said, ”It’s fine if there’s nothing. I was just asking. It would be great if this power of attorney can really get rid of Charles Prescott!”

Nathan Fawcett said, ”Don’t worry about that. I’m not so incompetent that I can’t handle something this simple.”

Hearing this, Anne Sutton suddenly broke into a smile. ”Now that you’ve said that, I’m relieved! Ethan, thank you for coming to Westhaven.”

For her, his arrival was like a new hope dawning.

This made Anne Sutton very happy.

After all, she finally had someone to back her up against the Prescotts.

...

At the Shields family residence, Stella Shields had the driver stop at the gate and stepped out of the car.

She had been so busy these past few years that she rarely came home.

She spent more time at the Linden family’s home than her own.

Justin Shields was standing on the steps. Seeing her, he asked, ”Why the sudden visit?”

Stella Shields sighed. ”Ethan Linden got into a fight with his mother. I’m here to try and talk some sense into them.”

Justin Shields said, ”I take it this is about the Fawcett family’s business?”

”Exactly!” Stella Shields exclaimed. ”It’s all Anne Sutton’s fault. None of this would have happened if she hadn’t shown up. Ethan was doing just fine in Veridia all these years.”

The moment Anne Sutton appeared, he ran straight to Westhaven, and now he’s even getting involved in the Fawcett family’s mess.

Justin Shields looked at his younger sister, knowing how infatuated Stella Shields was with Ethan Linden.

He tried to reason with her. ”He’s a grown man. He has the right to decide what he does, and it might not have anything to do with Anne Sutton.”

”How could it have nothing to do with her? What was she even doing in Veridia? Back when Nathan died, what did she do? She aborted her own child just to be with Charles Prescott. A woman like that, how is she worthy of being by Ethan Linden’s side?”

Speaking of the past, Stella Shields was even angrier than Nathan Fawcett himself.

After all, she truly couldn’t understand. He used to despise Anne Sutton, so why was he getting involved with her now?!

’Does Anne Sutton really have that much charm?’

Justin Shields said, ”Actually... none of us really know what happened back then. Could it have been a misunderstanding? Anne Sutton said Charles Prescott forced her to get rid of the child.”

”And you believe her?” Stella Shields shot her brother a look. ”Of course she’d say that to you. She was engaged to Charles Prescott for years; she only got with Nathan for revenge. Once Nathan was gone, isn’t it perfectly normal that she wouldn’t want to have the baby? Too bad for her, Charles Prescott didn’t even want her!”

Justin Shields saw how furious Stella Shields was. He knew that for all the years she’d spent around the Linden family, she had been hoping things would work out between her and Ethan Linden.

The real Ethan Linden was dead now, but Nathan Fawcett looked identical to him. It was inevitable that her heart would be swayed...

He looked at her and said, ”I know how you feel about him, but Ethan Linden is gone. The man you see now is Nathan Fawcett, and legally speaking, he and Anne Sutton are husband and wife.”

”He’s Ethan Linden! Not Nathan Fawcett!” Stella Shields snapped at Justin Shields. ”Wait, Brother, you said you would help me. Why does it sound like you’re hoping Ethan and Anne Sutton get together now?”

Justin Shields replied, ”I’m just... afraid you’ll get hurt. You’re my sister, and I’m worried you’re getting too invested in Ethan Linden only to get hurt yourself.”

She had been by Nathan Fawcett’s side for years, but he had never reciprocated her feelings.

Yet the moment he saw Anne Sutton, he began to act completely out of character.

He truly saw no hope for a future between Stella Shields and Nathan Fawcett.

Stella Shields didn’t agree with him. ”From the sound of it, you think Ethan actually likes Anne Sutton? You’re overthinking things! When they were together, he just treated her as a tool for having children. He won’t develop feelings for her now. He told me he’s only dealing with her for Ian’s sake. A woman like Anne Sutton—what right does she have to be with Ethan?”

Justin Shields looked at Stella Shields and said, ”I hope you’re right.”

”Cancel the rest of my schedule.”

Justin Shields asked, ”What’s wrong? Are you taking a break from work?”

”I’m planning on staying here for a while.”

’It’s just about the child, isn’t it?’

She’d been so busy with work these past few years that she hadn’t had much time to spend with Ian.

’But if...’

’...if I focus all my attention on Ian now, and get him to accept me, then Ethan will stop thinking about being with Anne Sutton!’

Justin Shields nodded. ”Alright.”

He knew how smitten Stella Shields was with Ethan Linden.

She had been hung up on him for years.

Now that she wanted to be with Ethan Linden, he felt he should naturally help her fulfill that wish.

Stella Shields said, ”I’m going to see Mom now.”

...

After putting Ian to bed, Nathan Fawcett returned to his room and found Anne Sutton already asleep.

She had been busy at the hospital all day and was completely exhausted.

She was sleeping soundly.

Nathan Fawcett watched her for a moment, then sat down, careful not to wake her.

He pulled the covers over her, then stood up and went to the study.

He had just sat down in the study when he received a call from Anna Linden.

A call from his ”mother.” It made him pause. He had ignored her at the company today. ’She must be angry,’ he thought.

After a moment’s hesitation, Nathan Fawcett answered the call.

Anna Linden’s stern expression appeared on the video call.

She was still awake. Looking at Nathan Fawcett, she asked, ”Are you planning to disown me as your mother?”

”No.” Nathan Fawcett had no intention of cutting ties with her. ”I’ve never thought of disowning you.”

His own father was gone, and she now had only him as a son. He would naturally be filial and care for her in her old age.

Hearing this, Anna Linden’s expression softened slightly. ”This business with the Fawcett family—do you absolutely have to get involved?”

Nathan Fawcett replied, ”I’m already involved. I can’t stop now.”

Anna Linden said, ”If you insist on interfering, I can’t stop you. But... don’t forget, you are Ethan Linden, not Nathan Fawcett. You are the Head of the Linden Family now, and I expect you to act with a sense of proportion.”

When he first inherited the Linden family in Ethan Linden’s name, many people had opposed it.

They didn’t believe Ethan Linden was still alive.

It was she who had pulled off the grand deception, allowing him to inherit everything the Linden family had as Ethan Linden.

If he were to change his name back now, those people would inevitably try to find fault with him, threatening his position as Family Head.

”...” Nathan Fawcett said, ”Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing.”

He had, of course, considered all this, which was why he hadn’t yet told Charles Prescott that he was Nathan Fawcett.

Seeing that he had agreed, Anna Linden felt a little more at ease.

In the years since Ethan Linden’s death, Nathan Fawcett had always been by her side.

She had come to think of Nathan Fawcett as the real Ethan Linden.

If she had a complete falling out with him now, not only would the position of Head of the Linden Family be up for grabs, but she would also lose the only son she could rely on. She was, of course, unwilling to let that happen.
