Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Ian asked, ”Then do you miss him?”

Anne Sutton nodded. ”Yes. I miss him so much!”

That’s why she’d taken such a liking to Ian.

After all, the resemblance between Ian and Nathan Fawcett was uncanny, and she found it hard not to see one in the other.

Ian said, ”Why don’t you just think of me as your own little boy! My mom doesn’t like me anyway.”

Anne laughed. ”I don’t think your parents would agree to that.”

”Why not?” Ian said. ”I’ve already agreed!”

Anne was deeply touched. ”Thank you, Ian!”

Ian said, ”Kisses!”

He leaned in and planted a kiss on Anne’s cheek.

Anne couldn’t sleep, and neither could Ian. She played with him in his room for a while before they went downstairs and out into the courtyard.

Luckily, Ian wasn’t fazed by new environments. Even though it was his first day here, he seemed quite happy.

Anne sat on the steps, watching Ian as he stood by a flowerpot. He turned to her and said, ”This flower is so pretty!”

Anne smiled. ”You like it?”

”I want to pick it and give it to you.”

Ian’s eyes were fixed on the most beautiful bloom in the pot, and he looked ready to pounce.

Anne said, ”Thank you! But... how about we leave it in the pot? That way, we can see it every day. If you pick it, it will wilt very quickly!”

Hearing what Anne said, Ian replied, ”You’re right!”

He was a very sensible child. Despite his young age, he understood everything she told him.

Just then, Leo came running over.

Leo had just returned from Veridia with Charles Prescott and hadn’t yet gone back to their hometown with his grandmother, so he was still staying here.

He saw Ian, who was about his own age, and walked right up to him, staring with a curious expression.

”Who are you?” Leo asked, looking at Ian.

Ian glanced at him but didn’t say anything.

Leo walked over and plucked a flower. Ian’s eyes widened. ”What are you doing?”

He had just managed to restrain his own desire to pick that flower, thinking it was blooming so beautifully and he’d be able to see it every day. But the moment Leo arrived, he had to cause trouble!

Leo looked at the flower he had plucked, threw it on the ground, and shot Ian a defiant look.

Ian quickly picked the flower up.

Leo looked at Ian and asked again, ”Who are you?”

Ian glared at him. ”I’m not telling you!”

Leo said, ”Why not? This is my house! Why are you here?”

”No, it’s not!” Ian retorted. ”This isn’t your house!”

”It is too my house!” Leo said, giving Ian a shove. But Ian wasn’t one to take things lying down. Having been pushed, he naturally pushed back.

Leo lost his balance and was knocked to the ground, landing on his bottom.

Mrs. Prescott came over and saw her grandson on the ground. ”Leo!”

She rushed over, scooped up her grandson, and glared at Ian. ”Who are you? Why did you push our Leo!”

”He pushed me first!”

Leo clung to Mrs. Prescott and whined, ”Grandma, why is he in our house! Kick him out!”

Anne looked at Leo. ’He really is Charles Prescott’s son, through and through!’

’So this is his house now?’

’How ridiculous!’

Even though she knew you couldn’t take a child’s words to heart, Anne still felt a surge of anger watching him.

She stood up, walked over to Ian’s side, and said to Mrs. Prescott, ”Leo started it.”

Leo had, in fact, been the one provoking him from the start.

Hearing Anne’s words, Mrs. Prescott retorted, ”Our Leo would never start a fight! He’s the most obedient boy!”

Anne said, ”I was right here. I saw it with my own eyes. Are you calling me a liar?”

”If you saw it, why didn’t you intervene? Didn’t you see our Leo fall to the ground?” Mrs. Prescott’s gaze fixed on Anne. ”I bet you just can’t stand the sight of our Leo! It’s a good thing our Charles didn’t marry you. If a woman like you married into this family, who knows how you’d abuse our poor Leo!”

Anne replied, ”Don’t you worry. A man like your grandson—who has no sense of fidelity, a string of women on the side, and an illegitimate child—is someone I wouldn’t even deign to look at. There’s no chance I would ever marry him!”

”Oh!” the old woman taunted. ”Sounds like a case of sour grapes! Have you forgotten? You’re a widow now! Do you really still think of yourself as some pure young maiden? Forget our Charles; there aren’t many men out there who would want you.”

Anne raised an eyebrow at Mrs. Prescott. ”Speaking of widows, aren’t you one? Didn’t your husband die a long time ago? What gives you the right to be so arrogant?”

Miles Prescott didn’t come from a distinguished background. His mother was just an old woman from the countryside who had never seen much of the world. Now that both Miles and Charles Prescott had become successful, the old woman had grown smug.

Back in her hometown, she threw her weight around, acting as if everyone was supposed to dote on her.

She was an elder, and Anne normally wouldn’t want to bicker with her, but sometimes the old woman’s words were just too vile.

’It was as if she thought the Prescott Family was the best in the world and no one else was worthy of them!’

Mrs. Prescott was so furious she could have died. She pointed at Anne, wanting to say something, but felt she couldn’t win the argument. Instead, she clutched her head and said, ”You’ll be the death of me! I’m going to tell Charles about this and see how he deals with you.”

”Him?” Anne said. ”Go on, let’s see if he can even stand up for you.”

Mrs. Prescott trembled with rage. Her steps were unsteady as she clutched Leo and beat a hasty, undignified retreat.

Miles Prescott stood at the window, watching Anne in the courtyard and Mrs. Prescott, who was already walking away.

Anne turned to Ian and crouched down. ”Ian, you weren’t scared, were you?”

Ian said, ”No. It’s just... the flower got picked.”

Anne said, ”It’s okay. Let’s take it inside and put it in a vase.”

She now regretted ever telling Ian that he shouldn’t pick the flowers.

She picked up Ian, carried him and the flower back into the house, and found a vase to put it in.

...

Mrs. Prescott carried Leo back to Charles Prescott’s part of the house.

Charles Prescott was in the study, talking with his father.

Both father and son were deeply troubled by Ethan Linden’s sudden arrival.

After all, if Ethan Linden’s identity was confirmed, who knew how long it would be before the Fawcett family’s entire fortune fell into their hands.

Miles Prescott didn’t want to be on opposing sides with Ethan Linden, but with a woman like Anne Sutton, who hated them to the bone, it was inevitable that she would stir up trouble.

He ordered Charles Prescott, ”Anne is staying by his side now, and there’s no telling what she’ll say to him. Find a way to send her away!”

Charles Prescott replied, ”Anne won’t listen to me.”

Miles looked at Charles. ”Isn’t Anne’s mother sick? Make her go back to take care of her.”

At the mention of this, Charles sighed. ”She’s hated me for years and refuses to go back to the Sutton Family. She might not go back, even for her mother’s sake.”
