Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Sean Sutton followed Charles Prescott out. Charles looked at him, but before he could speak, Sean cut in, ”Don’t bother coming to me. It’s useless, I’m telling you. I won’t help you bully my daughter ever again.”

”Are you sure?” Charles said. ”I know Ethan Linden sent you money to save your company. But... if he were to find out that you were the one who dealt with Nathan Fawcett’s child back then, do you think he would still help you?”

”What are you talking about?” Sean Sutton stared at Charles in disbelief. ”You were the one who...”

”Me?” Charles said. ”Weren’t you the one who drugged Anne and took her to the hospital?”

”How could you be so shameless?”

’I can’t believe he’s blaming everything on me now.’

Seeing Sean Sutton’s dark expression, Charles softened his tone. ”I didn’t come here today to dredge up the past,” he said. ”I just wanted to remind you to watch what you say around Ethan Linden. Don’t get cocky. If you misspeak, don’t think you’ll get off scot-free.”

Hearing his words, Sean Sutton said, ”I’m not that stupid.”

’Besides...’

’Ethan Linden *is* Nathan Fawcett. He wouldn’t dare say anything even if you gave him ten times the courage!’

...

Anne Sutton came in from outside. She had gone home the previous night and wanted to visit her mother today.

The moment she walked in, she saw Charles Prescott sitting in her mother’s hospital room.

Seeing him, Anne said, ”What are you doing here?”

’And he’s here all by himself!’

Charles said, ”Your father went home. I told him to get some rest. No one was here, so I came to keep your mother company.”

’...’ ’The way he was speaking... just like back when we were still engaged.’

Anne said, ”You’re not needed here. Get out.”

Charles said, ”Your mother isn’t well. She just had surgery. Can’t I come visit her? Anne, you’re going too far. We’re family, one way or another.”

Anne said, ”If we’re family, then you should call me ’Auntie’!”

”...” Charles looked at her. ’She really has a sharp tongue.’

’Acting like she can pull rank on me.’

Mrs. Sutton said to Charles, ”Mr. Prescott, why don’t you head home? I’ll be fine with Anne here to keep me company. Your relationship with Anne is long over. Now, you two are merely... aunt and nephew. Being so close isn’t good for Anne’s reputation.”

Hearing Mrs. Sutton, Charles stood up. ”Auntie,” he said, ”I know Anne has been alone ever since Nathan Fawcett left. To be honest, I’ve always wanted to be with her, but she just gets angry the moment she sees me. There’s nothing I can do. If I could, I’d marry her right now. My feelings for Anne are sincere. I’ve never lied to you about that.”

He knew Mrs. Sutton was soft-hearted, so he was deliberately saying these sentimental things in front of her.

Anne snapped, ”That’s enough!”

’He’s so good at fooling my family.’

Mrs. Sutton said, ”Thank you for the kind thought, Mr. Prescott, but our Anne isn’t good enough for you. With your current standing, how could she possibly measure up? Please, just let her be.”

Anne glanced at her mother, touched by her words.

’It’s a rare moment. My mother isn’t trying to push me back together with Charles.’

Hearing Mrs. Sutton, Charles said, ”Then I’ll be on my way.”

With that, he glanced at Anne and walked out the door.

After Charles left, Anne sat down and looked at her mother.

Mrs. Sutton sighed. ”Anne,” she said, ”why don’t you... just find a boyfriend?”

Anne said, ”Why are you bringing this up again out of nowhere?”

”It’s so annoying how Charles keeps pestering you. If you had a boyfriend, it wouldn’t be so easy for him to keep bothering you.”

”...” Anne fell silent. She had neither the energy nor the time.

Mrs. Sutton continued, ”I know you’re still hung up on what happened with the baby, but I really want you to be happy. One of my best friends is coming over later. She has a son who’s a great catch. You should meet him! If it works out, you two can go on a date. If you have a boyfriend, Charles won’t be able to keep bothering you.”

’Men are all the same. Even an ex-girlfriend is still their property in their eyes.’

’And you can’t believe a single word that comes out of Charles Prescott’s mouth.’

’After everything that’s happened, I’m not going to fall for that hypocrite’s lies ever again!’

Anne said, ”I...”

Just as she was about to refuse, Mrs. Sutton grabbed her hand. ”I’m begging you, honey.”

Seeing her mother worrying about her even while lying in a hospital bed, Anne sighed. ”Okay.”

Soon enough, Mrs. Sutton’s friend called.

Anne went to the entrance to meet them.

It was one of her mother’s best friends from when she was young, someone Anne hadn’t seen in a very long time.

She said, ”Hello, Mrs. Dunn.”

Beside Mrs. Dunn was a young man who looked to be in his thirties. He was quite handsome and wore a jacket, giving off a steady and mature vibe.

’My mother said her friend’s son... It can’t be this guy, can it?’

’He’s actually good-looking. And they want him to go on a blind date with *me*?’

’A guy with his qualifications doesn’t need to be set up with someone like me!’

Mrs. Dunn pointed to the young man. ”Anne, this is my son, Justin.”

Anne gave a polite nod, and he did the same.

Soon, Anne led them into the hospital room.

The moment Mrs. Dunn saw Mrs. Sutton, the two of them started chatting away.

Though the two friends hadn’t seen each other in years, they had been very close when they were younger.

Mrs. Dunn remarked with a sigh, ”When I used to visit your home, Anne was barely over a year old! I can’t believe so many years have flown by.”

Mrs. Sutton nodded. ”I know! And this must be Justin! He’s so handsome.”

Mrs. Dunn laughed. ”So, when you mentioned marrying your Anne to our Justin... you were serious, right?”

Anne, surprised by how forward she was, quickly said, ”Mrs. Dunn, you’re joking. How could I possibly be a match for your son?”

”Nonsense,” Mrs. Dunn said. ”Your mother and I go way back. I actually wanted to introduce you to our Justin back then, but we dropped the idea when we heard you were engaged. The fact that you’re single now just proves you and Justin are meant to be.”

Anne glanced at Justin Shields, who was sitting off to the side. He didn’t seem to mind what his mother was saying at all.

He simply maintained a smile, making it impossible to guess what he was thinking.

...

Thankfully, they didn’t stay for much longer.

That evening, Sharon came over, so Anne returned to the Fawcett residence.

She walked in the door and saw Justin Shields sitting in the living room of her home. Nathan Fawcett and Ian were there as well.

Justin Shields was talking to Nathan Fawcett.

When Justin Shields saw Anne come in, he smiled.

Anne asked, ”What are you doing here?”

Nathan Fawcett watched the scene, his gaze fixed on Anne. He didn’t realize she was speaking to Justin Shields until Justin himself spoke up, ”I heard Ethan was over, so I came to see him. You’re back late?”
