Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Anne Sutton heard what her mother was saying and tried to stop her. ”Mom.”

Mrs. Sutton laughed. ”What, are you getting shy?”

She truly felt that Justin Shields was the best possible match.

Better than Nathan Fawcett, better than Charles Prescott.

She remembered how Anne Sutton had married Nathan Fawcett because of her family’s situation, jumping into the inferno that was the Fawcett family.

Now, all she wanted was for Anne Sutton to cut ties with the Fawcett family and live her own life in peace.

Anne Sutton was at a loss for words, so she could only watch TV.

Ian was also sitting in a chair, watching TV.

The host asked Stella Shields, ”I heard that you have a son, Stella. Is that true?”

Hearing this, Stella Shields smiled. She didn’t confirm it, but she didn’t deny it either.

The host chuckled. ”Oh... so it seems it’s true! I wonder who’s lucky enough to be the father of our Stella’s son.”

Stella Shields said, ”That’s not true.”

But by denying it now, the host wasn’t going to believe her.

The host then asked, ”By the way, I heard you know Mr. Linden. Is that true?”

Stella Shields replied, ”Yes, but we’re just good friends, not the kind of relationship everyone is thinking of.”

The host said, ”There are so many people with the surname Linden. I haven’t even said which one, and you’re already so eager to admit it?”

Stella Shields gave a helpless laugh.

...

Mrs. Shields watched her daughter on screen and laughed, then turned to Justin Shields and asked, ”Didn’t you go see Ethan Linden? How is he? Why don’t we have him over for dinner sometime?”

She knew Stella Shields had always had her heart set on Ethan Linden, thinking about him ever since they were young.

And she was very hopeful that Stella Shields and Ethan Linden would get married soon.

Hearing his mother’s words, Justin Shields said, ”That might not be a good idea. Stella isn’t even here. It would be awkward for him to come over, and besides, he’s busy.”

Anne Sutton sat to the side, listening to them talk about Ethan Linden. ’From the sounds of it, the Shields family already considers him their son-in-law!’

’That jerk... He’s practically engaged, and he still comes and bothers me.’

Mrs. Shields said, ”That’s true! Sigh, did he say when he and Stella are getting married?”

Justin Shields replied, ”Stella’s career is really taking off right now, so she’s not in a hurry. Even if you told her to get married, she wouldn’t agree.”

The truth, however, was that Nathan Fawcett was the one who hadn’t agreed, but of course, he couldn’t say any of this in front of Anne Sutton.

Anne Sutton, sitting to the side, thought, ’So it seems that because of Stella’s career, two people who are clearly in love haven’t gotten married yet.’

’Makes sense. After all, for the sake of her career, Stella Shields was even willing to sacrifice her own son.’

...

Mrs. Shields stayed with Mrs. Sutton for a while. As it neared noon, she had something to attend to and prepared to leave.

After all, she was just a friend. The Sutton family had people to take care of Mrs. Sutton.

Justin Shields prepared to leave with his mother.

Before leaving, he glanced at Ian and said, ”Ian, want to come play at your uncle’s house?”

Ian shook his head. ”No, thank you. I’m fine here with Auntie.”

It was clear he preferred Anne Sutton to Justin Shields.

Besides, he was completely absorbed in the TV show at the moment.

Justin Shields said to Anne Sutton, ”How about I take him home first?”

”It’s fine,” Anne Sutton said. ”If he likes it here, let him stay. It’s no trouble. I can take him home later.”

In any case, she was very fond of Ian and didn’t find him to be a bother at all.

She was only at the hospital to keep her mother company and had nothing else to do anyway.

Justin Shields nodded. ”I’ll leave him in your care, then.”

”Anne,” Mrs. Shields said. ”This is for you.”

As she spoke, she took out a bracelet and handed it over. Before Anne Sutton could even react, Mrs. Shields had already slipped the bracelet onto Anne’s wrist. ”When your mother is feeling better, come visit us at home with her.”

The two mothers had been discussing a marriage between Anne Sutton and Justin Shields earlier, and now it seemed Mrs. Shields was serious about it—she was even giving gifts.

How could Anne Sutton dare to accept it? She hurriedly tried to take the bracelet off. ”Auntie, this is too sudden.”

”It’s not sudden at all.” Mrs. Shields stopped her hand as she tried to remove the bracelet. ”Justin likes you, and I like you too. Unless you think our Justin isn’t good enough...”

”No, that’s not it, I...” Anne Sutton tried to pull the bracelet off, only to find that while it had been easy to put on, taking it off was surprisingly difficult.

Mrs. Shields smiled and said, ”As long as you don’t think he isn’t good enough, that’s all that matters!”

Before Anne Sutton could get the bracelet off, Mrs. Shields and Justin Shields were already gone.

Anne Sutton turned back to her mother and said, ”Mom.”

Mrs. Sutton said, ”Isn’t this wonderful? Justin is a good person, and very polite. Is there something you don’t like about him?”

”No.” Anne Sutton really couldn’t find any fault with Justin Shields. ”It just feels too sudden, and I’m not ready yet.”

Mrs. Sutton said, ”Oh, Anne! This is Mom’s only wish. You suffered so much for the family in the past. Now, I just want to make this one decision for you, to see you happy, can I do that? With my health... I don’t even know if I’ll ever get better. Even though I had the surgery, the doctor said we still have to wait and see. I’m just afraid that if I’m gone, there will be no one left to cherish you.”

Anne Sutton looked at her mother. Patients who were ill often became a bit sentimental. Her mother acting this way was perfectly normal.

She glanced at Ian, who was looking at her. It seemed even Ian approved of her getting together with Justin Shields.

’Maybe... I’m really being too stubborn?’

...

In the afternoon, Anne Sutton took Ian home.

The housekeeper had already prepared dinner and was waiting for them.

Nathan Fawcett was also back.

The three of them ate dinner together.

Nathan Fawcett’s gaze fell on the bracelet on Anne Sutton’s wrist. He asked, ”What’s this?”

Anne Sutton glanced at the bracelet and replied, ”Justin’s mother gave it to me.”

”Well, isn’t that nice!” Nathan Fawcett immediately became sarcastic. ”I haven’t seen you for one day and you’ve already received a greeting gift. Looks like it won’t be long before you’re the Shields family’s daughter-in-law! You didn’t listen to a single word I said last night.”

Anne Sutton looked at him and said, ”My mother is sick right now, and she really wants me to find someone reliable to be with. Justin Shields seems like a decent guy, and I can’t find a reason to refuse. I can’t exactly tell my mother he’s a scumbag just because you said so, can I? Besides, if I really do end up with Justin, I’ll have to call you brother-in-law! Mrs. Shields was praising you all day today, saying how well you and Ms. Shields get along. I wonder if she knows what you’re really like in front of me.”

When Nathan Fawcett heard her say ”brother-in-law,” he knew she was lumping him together with Stella Shields again.

He said, ”I believe I’ve told you before, there’s nothing between her and me. I’m not going to be with her, and this ’brother-in-law’ business is utter nonsense.”

”You’re lying to me again.” Especially after seeing how Mrs. Shields and Justin Shields acted today, Anne Sutton felt they were all in it together. ”And during the interview, Stella Shields made it all so clear. I mean, who *couldn’t* tell she and Ethan Linden are a couple!”

Nathan Fawcett asked, ”Then what will it take for you to believe me?”
