Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Nathan Fawcett wasn’t exactly a good person.

Although Anna Linden had spent the last few years hoping he would become more like Ethan Linden—who, by comparison, was a sensible man with sound values—it often forced Nathan Fawcett to restrain himself.

But deep down, he was still himself.

Still the same man who did whatever he wanted in the Fawcett family.

Anne Sutton’s little tricks were, of course, of no consequence to him.

He remarked with a sigh, ”You really never miss a chance to make Charles Prescott miserable.”

Hearing this, Anne Sutton said, ”He started it! He deserves it! I just don’t want to see him get his way.”

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett. Seeing his silence, she asked cautiously, ”Do you think I’m going too far?”

After all, deliberately making life difficult for someone you hate was a bit petty.

But she just couldn’t help herself!

Hearing her words, Nathan Fawcett glanced at her and said, ”Do as you please.”

”...”

Anne Sutton sat to one side. The car had already left the Fawcett estate, and they didn’t speak again.

When they arrived at the restaurant, Anne Sutton got out of the car. Nathan Fawcett got out from the other side, lifting Ian out as well.

Today’s gathering had been organized by Miles Prescott.

Nathan Fawcett walked ahead, holding the hand of little, short-legged Ian, with Anne Sutton following behind.

Although at home, Nathan Fawcett showed no restraint with Anne Sutton and would deliberately tease her, he was thankfully quite proper in public.

...

Upstairs in the private room, the door was open, and a few familiar faces were inside.

They were all important figures from the Fawcett Group. During her years with the Fawcett family, Anne Sutton had met most of them before. While not well-acquainted, she could still tell who was who.

Miles Prescott was also there.

It seemed only Charles Prescott hadn’t arrived yet.

When Miles Prescott saw Nathan Fawcett, he greeted him warmly, ”Ethan!”

But when he saw Anne Sutton, his expression froze for a moment.

’I can’t believe Ethan actually brought Anne Sutton!’

’She’s a woman who knows nothing about the Fawcett family’s affairs. Coming here at a time like this, isn’t she just here to cause trouble?’

Miles Prescott said, ”And our sister-in-law is here as well.”

Although he disliked Anne Sutton, he maintained a courteous facade in front of others, acting for all the world like a caring elder looking after Nathan Fawcett’s widow.

Nathan Fawcett spoke up. ”My sister-in-law and I are family, so I brought her along. I trust no one objects?”

All eyes were on Nathan Fawcett, studying him and his identity. They found that this man named Ethan Linden did indeed bear some resemblance to Nathan Fawcett.

The moment he spoke, everyone else politely replied, ”Not at all! Please, have a seat!”

The seating was pre-arranged, and there was no place set for Anne Sutton.

Nathan Fawcett reached out, pulled back the chair at his own spot, and said to Anne Sutton, ”Sister-in-law, please sit.”

His tone was very polite, and his attitude toward Anne Sutton was incredibly respectful, as if they were truly just brother-in-law and sister-in-law.

Anne Sutton watched him, so prim and proper, and realized he was actually quite a convincing actor in public.

’If I didn’t remember him overstepping in my room this very afternoon, I might have actually been fooled by him.’

Anne Sutton sat down.

She took Nathan Fawcett’s seat, and the person next to it, taking the hint, quickly made room for Nathan.

A waiter came over and added a new place setting for them.

After they were seated, all eyes turned back to Nathan Fawcett. As the host, Miles Prescott took the initiative to make introductions. ”Allow me to introduce everyone. This is Ethan Linden, the old Chairman’s son. Though I’ve never heard of...”

Before Miles Prescott could finish, Chairman Grant, who was sitting to the side, spoke up. ”I know of him! I joined the company a long time ago, so I knew about the Chairman’s divorce back then. Chairman Fawcett originally had two sons. When they divorced, his wife took one with her, leaving only Nathan behind. It’s just that... Nathan’s health was poor, and he passed away tragically. But now Ethan has returned! Ethan, how is your mother?”

When Anna Linden first returned, no one was notified.

At the time, not even Miles and Charles Prescott knew about it. The official story was that Nathan Fawcett had been sent elsewhere for treatment.

Chairman Grant was a company veteran, one of the men who had built the business with Chairman Fawcett from the ground up. Now that he had spoken, the others naturally believed him.

Miles Prescott hadn’t expected that Chairman Grant would directly confirm Ethan Linden’s identity the moment he spoke.

He had originally planned to make an issue of Ethan’s identity, but now, it seemed that was no longer possible.

After hearing Chairman Grant’s words, the others looked at the man called Ethan Linden and remarked, ”It’s true... he really does look like Chairman Fawcett! And a lot like Nathan, too.”

Nathan Fawcett sat to the side, listening to them discuss him. He smiled and said to Chairman Grant, ”My mother is doing well. Thank you for your concern, Uncle Grant.”

Just then, Charles Prescott walked in from outside. ”Sorry, I’m late.”

He could have arrived earlier, but he had been delayed by the issue with his grandmother.

After coming in, he glanced at Anne Sutton, his expression complicated.

’I can’t believe it. After she and my grandmother made such a scene... she still ended up keeping her!’

’She really knows how to cause trouble for me!’

After entering, Charles Prescott greeted the board members and Nathan Fawcett, then sat down.

Anne Sutton, sitting next to Nathan Fawcett, said, ”Coming so late, shouldn’t you penalize yourself with a few drinks?”

Charles Prescott glanced at her. Of everyone present, besides Ian, he was the lowest in seniority.

He even had to call this woman, Anne Sutton, ”Auntie”!

Charles Prescott said, ”As I should!”

With that, he downed a few drinks as a penalty.

Watching him, Anne Sutton’s lips curved into a smirk. ’You know, messing with Charles Prescott really is quite amusing.’

Sitting next to Charles Prescott was President Sterling, who had the best relationship with him and his father.

President Sterling looked at Anne Sutton and said, ”What have you been busy with lately, Anne? Haven’t you been to the hospital?”

Anne Sutton replied, ”I still have two days of vacation left. And since Ethan is back, I came to welcome him with everyone.”

President Sterling sighed. ”Speaking of which, it’s been several years since Nathan passed.”

At the mention of this, Anne Sutton’s expression darkened.

’Nathan...’

President Sterling looked at Anne Sutton and said, ”I know you and Nathan were close, but it’s not right for you to stay single forever. We’re not unreasonable people! I recently met someone, a good man, in a similar situation as you—his wife passed away from an illness a few years ago. Anne, if you have some free time, I can introduce you.”

Charles Prescott, sitting nearby, listened to President Sterling’s words without any surprise.

This had been his arrangement from the start.

His grandmother’s words today had actually reminded him—

—the best way to get Anne Sutton to leave the Fawcett family was indeed to marry her off.

He had been reluctant before, but now that Ethan Linden was here, he had to listen to his father and get her out of the house to prevent her from causing trouble.

Anne Sutton said, ”I’m not getting married!”
