I Am Your Natural Enemy

Thinking about this, Wen Yan prepared to continue investigating. The Scorching Sun Department’s app lacked the instant functionality he wanted, so he directly asked Black Box for help.

”Help me check this number, and see if there was another owner in the past.”

Very quickly, Black Box responded.

Indeed there was, and the owner really did have the surname Li.

The owner was from Nanwu County, and at the beginning of this year, the number was in arrears. It had not been paid since, and three months later, it was reclaimed by the carrier.

A few months later, after Wen Yan arrived here, he didn’t really want to use his original number, so he got a new phone number, which fell into his hands.

The original owner, since the beginning of the year, had no more records; their bank cards had no transactions, they had no phone numbers, and didn’t even have any assets.

And regarding this owner, the most recent record was a police report.

It was filed by a relative of the owner, who was frequently harassed by debt collectors, so they directly reported to the police.

Last year at the end of the year, the owner sold their house, pulled out a heap of online loans, cashed them all, and disappeared. The last documented location was a town next to Harbor City.

Seeing this, Wen Yan understood this was a route from at least thirty years ago.

But nowadays, no one does this anymore. It’s no longer like thirty or forty years ago, when a taxi driver could just support two young girls; there’s no snakehead on this route anymore because it’s too risky and doesn’t make money.

No one reported them missing, the family only learned about it when informed by debt collectors.

Approximately looking at the records, this is a common meandering route people follow to leave, nothing special about it.

Even now, it’s quite normal for many to disappear without a trace after leaving.

Cases like this are rarely reported as missing persons, unless there are unforeseen circumstances, they hardly appear in the cases of Scorching Sun Department.

The people in the Scorching Sun Department are already short-staffed, how could they waste local personnel’s energy on such matters?

Wen Yan carefully examined the gathered information, noticing the person who called him just minutes ago hadn’t made any further calls.

He pondered for a moment and decided to call Feng Yao.

”Hey, busy? Can you spare a couple of minutes to help catch someone?”

”What’s up?”

”A scam call came through to my phone, but I checked and found it used the data of the previous number owner. Moreover, after calling me, the person didn’t continue to cast a wide net, which feels off.”

While on the phone, Wen Yan sent over the information to Feng Yao.

Feng Yao couldn’t help but chuckle upon hearing this.

”What’s the deal? A scam aimed at you?”

Feng Yao quickly conducted a check, and coupled with the information Wen Yan sent over, his smile gradually faded.

He wedged the phone between his shoulder, switched from single-hand to double-hand operation, and swiftly used his authority to trace from this point.

Two minutes later.

”It’s indeed off; it wasn’t a scam call, more like a signal.

The primary person behind the calls has connected parts and made calls to over ten numbers in recent days.

Among them, two people, like the previous owner of your private number, disappeared.

Additionally, two numbers were sold off by nominal owners; the actual users of those numbers were already working sewing machines inside last month.

For the rest of them, just looking at the numbers, the owners are average people, yet these few don’t have any proper jobs.

Based on the current situation, it’s likely they sold their IDs and phone numbers.

This isn’t a common method of widespread scam; it’s signaling.”

Feng Yao finished saying this and immediately started arranging manpower to see if they could apprehend someone at the located position.

”Weren’t there two who went inside earlier? Find someone to ask them, I now suspect these guys might be connected with the Nanyang Union.” Wen Yan casually replied.

”These old hands likely won’t spill; if they’re involved in the case, that’s a confession, not a merit. They might not even get reduced sentences, and if linked to a new case, it could increase.”

”I have great confidence in the interrogation experts from the department.”

”Alright, I’ll ask them.”

Soon, people from the Yu State Squadron appeared at the location. On the surface, it was a legitimate foreign trade company, only recently struggling, with a ship carrying their goods capsized on the opposite side of the world, causing ongoing disputes.

The tech specialists quickly identified which device was operated, who operated it, but the person had already left the company.

Yet in the city, their face was captured, totaling less than twenty minutes, making the probability of escape extremely low.

Ten minutes later, someone was intercepted at the place where they alighted and escorted back.

Meanwhile, in the Yu State Scorching Sun Department, the interrogation specialist, who had been idle these days, walked into the watch station with a smile, submitted documents, and began the interrogation process.

Seeing the first detainee, the interrogation specialist still maintained a smile, sizing up the shaven-headed criminal.

”Don’t be nervous, I have some matters I’d like to ask you, concerning other individuals.

You’re fortunate, you’re the first I’m questioning.

You might just achieve significant merit, it’s up to you.”

Faced with this, the criminal remained highly cautious, becoming even more alert hearing the words.

”You should’ve seen the news in there, right?
