High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1396: Chapter 143: The 2nd Witness

Last winter vacation, when I went home for ancestral worship, there was a demon that had transformed from a stray dog lurking around Zheng Qing, eyeing his family members.

At that time, the Yellow Flowered Cat living in our home helped Zheng Qing deal with the trouble.

”A student attacked by a demon during the school holidays at home? Why haven’t I heard any report about it from the Alliance?”

”The Trident Sword said there was no evidence, they didn’t officially file the case, just made a simple registration.” Every time he thought about it, Zheng Qing felt somewhat stifled: ”...At that time, the demon-dog was eaten by Brother Huang, so the evidence was gone... You know Brother Huang, right? The Yellow Flowered Cat from San You Bookstore... It was also nearby at the time, helping me drive away the demon-dog and ate it.”

Saying this, Zheng Qing earnestly ’looked straight’ at the Witch, wanting her to see the sincerity in his eyes.

The Witch’s eyebrows lifted beautifully; it was unclear if she was dissatisfied with the bureaucratic air of the Trident Sword, or if she was interested in the Yellow Flowered Cat that eats demons.

The Warlock immediately avoided her gaze in embarrassment.

Indeed, I’m still lacking in spiritual power, he silently repeated the Heart Sutra to himself, twisted his body, and sighed.

”When does that little dog usually appear?” Su Shijun continued asking.

”It’s not certain... It always intrudes into my line of sight when I least expect it.”

”Is there no pattern at all?”

”None discovered as of now... It has become smarter, always choosing to show its tracks in corners where others can’t see.”

”No wonder you are suspected of having hallucinations. These kinds of things that cannot be disproven or proven, usually people tend to think they are false...”

Just then, a rhythmic knocking sound came from the office door.

Zheng Qing swiftly glanced at the doorway, turned his head back, and caught sight of Su Shijun’s slightly lifted chin: ”Hear that? That’s a polite visitor... Please come in!”

The one who pushed the door and entered was the Head Maid of Greenhill Mansion, Su Man.

But Su Ya’s little head was also rubbing against the hem of the Head Maid’s long skirt as she came in, looking around left and right, seemingly curious about what some despicable guy was doing in Miss’s office.

”The routine meeting today has already ended; I have just sent everyone off work.” Su Man was here to report for work to the masters of the Two-Dimensional Evolution Lab. She spoke systematically, without a sideways glance, as if Zheng Qing was just a puff of air:

”The Two-Dimensional Evolution Lab completed operations in a total of two hundred eighty-four worlds throughout June 1st, deploying one thousand and seventeen Reincarnation teams, with four thousand three hundred and one Reincarnators, including fifty-three new Reincarnators and one hundred seventy-nine eliminations, resulting in an elimination rate that has increased by six percentage points compared to the previous month...”

Although the content was interesting, the dry data could dispel all interest of the listener. It was like a long time ago, during mathematics class, Zheng Qing’s attention quickly scattered amidst the strings of numbers and rule explanations — one moment he was reflecting on how today was unexpectedly June 1st, completely unaware that it was Children’s Day; the next moment, he began to imagine the experiences his own shadow, Big Black, had gone through in those worlds of reincarnation.

Just as distracted as him was another little fox lady.

Su Ya’s head first popped out from the left side of Su Man’s skirt hem, quickly retracted, then came out from the right side, and then left again, followed by the right again — like a gopher emerging from its burrow — Zheng Qing quickly noticed Su Ya’s movements, and immediately became interested.

He simulated a game of whack-a-mole in his mind, using the act of blinking as the ’hammer’. If the little witch’s head popped out from the left side of Su Man’s skirt hem when he blinked his left eye, that meant he scored a hit; conversely, if her head appeared from the right side when he blinked his left eye, then he missed.

This simple and fun game quickly revived the warlock’s spirits.

Left, left, right, left, right, right.

The warlock was having a blast, while the little fox lady seemed as if she was under a hyperactivity spell, refusing to pause for even a moment. At first, Su Shijun could pretend not to notice, but as Su Ya darted more frequently in and out from under Su Man’s skirt, it started to interfere with the head maid’s routine reporting duties, and she had no choice but to tap the tip of her pen on the desk.

”Thump! Thump! Thump!”

”What are you doing?” The owner of the office looked at the little fox lady with an imposing expression: ”This is a lab, not a playground... Can’t you be quiet for a moment?!”

Su Ya, as if struck by an immobilization spell, froze in place immediately.

After a while, she meekly defended herself, ”It was Gouzi who started it...”

The other two witches in the office were still confused, but Zheng Qing was the first to respond. He abruptly turned around, following the direction of the little fox lady’s gaze, and sure enough, in a hidden corner of the office, a dusty-looking dog was darting left and right around a potted landscape.

Upon noticing the younger cost student’s gaze, Gouzi stuck out its tongue, wagged its tail merrily, and woosh—disappeared without a trace.

Leaving behind a puff of fine dust, which slowly descended in the sunlight.

”Dog! Dog!” Zheng Qing, like Fan Jin who had just aced an imperial examination, was somewhat inarticulate: ”The dog... was there! You saw it, right?! You saw it!”

He rushed toward the little fox lady, seemingly wanting to grab her shoulders and shake her a bit, but ultimately gave up on this idea under the stern gaze of the head maid, instead opting to support himself on his knees, crouching in front of Su Ya, eagerly waiting for her to say something.

Su Ya, intimidated by the warlock’s formidable presence, clung tightly to the head maid’s skirt hem, revealing only half of her face, silent.

Su Shijun was the third person in the room to realize what had happened.

She glanced at the potted landscape with interest.

Then, looking at Su Ya, her eyes conveyed a bit of encouragement, ”You said, you just saw a little dog in this office? What did it look like? How did it vanish?”

Encouraged by the young lady, Su Ya finally stepped out from behind the head maid, revealing most of herself.

”A little gray dog with floppy ears, its face looking like it was punched,” Su Ya described the appearance of Gouzi, then pointed at the potted landscape, a hint of confusion on her face: ”It was just standing there a moment ago playing hide and seek with me... and then suddenly disappeared. Poof! Just like that.”

Su Shijun mused, flipping open a Law book on the desk and began to write and draw with a feather pen, jotting down some spell.

When she stopped writing, Su Man, who had been standing next to the desk, spoke up softly, ”Miss?”

Su Shijun as if waking from a dream, looked up at her head maid, ”Forget about the meeting details and lab reports for now, I’ll look at them later... You go back to the mansion first, don’t wait for me. Su Ya, stay behind.”

The little fox lady zipped out from behind the head maid, clasped her hands delightfully, and stood straight in front of the desk, her sash moving slightly. Zheng Qing suspected that she couldn’t contain her joy and twitched her tail.
