High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1391: Chapter 138 The Dog Arrives

The day after was a Monday.

Although there had been a slight disturbance in the dormitory last night, it did not affect the biological clock of the young scholarship student.

Just past six in the morning, Zheng Qing was still pushed out of bed by the force of habit, leaving Duke Zhou’s Go table, drowsily opening his eyes, yawning and pulling back the curtain, preparing to get up for morning classes.

Then his foot hung half a foot away from his shoes, suspended in mid-air.

Because a dusty gray dog was squatting next to his shoes, tail wagging cheerfully, with a shoelace in its mouth.

Zheng Qing’s yawn got stuck in his throat, and for a good while, he forgot whether he should open or close his mouth.

After a few ’heh heh’ sounds, the young wizard suddenly came to his senses, lifting his foot and aiming a kick at the dog. Not surprisingly, he kicked through thin air. The dog, with its tongue out and tail wagging, turned into a wisp of vapor and vanished in front of Zheng Qing’s eyes. The shoelace it had been carrying dropped to the ground with a ’plop’ – limp, like a dead snake.

A second later, the dog reappeared before Zheng Qing, slightly farther away than before – about a yard’s distance – and continued to eagerly wag its tail and stick out its tongue.

This guy is getting more and more skilled at this ability, Zheng Qing thought.

Soon, he realized his own mistake.

”The dog is here! The dog is here!” the young scholarship student shouted: ”That dog is here again!! Everyone, get up quick! The dog is here again!!”

Before his voice died down, the dog ’poofed’ and once again turned into a wisp of vapor, disappearing from Zheng Qing’s sight.

The warlock stared at the empty floor in front of him, speechless.

Others woken up by his noise, rubbed their eyes and got out of bed, but not a single dog hair could be seen.

”It was just squatting here! Less than a meter away from my head!” Zheng Qing, barefooted on the floor, wild with excitement, spitting while gesticulating to his companions – at last, he even imitated the squatting posture of the dog to demonstrate.

But this did not increase his persuasiveness in the slightest.

”Maybe you’re seeing things,” Xin Fat Man yawned, rubbing his eyes, rolled over, and fell back onto his pillow, his voice fading: ”I still need to sleep... don’t disturb me... I still have classes later...”

”It really came!!”

”Alright, alright, it came... Huh... Huh,” the Fat Man muttered vaguely, his snoring gradually resumed.

Zheng Qing looked at Xiao Xiao, fuming.

Doctor Xiao, wearing pajamas and slip-on shoes, clutching a Crystal Ball, approached the spot Zheng Qing pointed to. He spun the Crystal Ball and chanted for a while.

The fluctuations of Magic ebbed and flowed, but the Crystal Ball remained dim, no shadow appearing – even Zheng Qing, who wasn’t very proficient in Crystal Ball Divination, knew what this meant.

”But just now, it really was squatting here,” the young scholarship student continued his defense. Compared to before, his voice was much weaker, sounding somewhat disheartened.

Xiao Xiao did not explicitly express his opinion.

”Perhaps.”

He stood up, put the Crystal Ball back in the drawer of his desk, and began to put on his school robe while analyzing: ”But it’s also possible that you really were seeing things... they say ’Daytime thoughts turn into nighttime dreams’, ’Constant thoughts will resonate’... According to what you said before, that little dog moves mysteriously and has appeared in front of you for no reason multiple times, causing you some psychological stress... Plus last night’s experience, it’s not out of the question that you just had a nightmare... and then you just woke up, temporarily unable to distinguish between dreams and reality. This kind of situation is not uncommon.”

This analysis made sense.

Zheng Qing looked doubtfully at the place where the dog had disappeared.

Could it really be his own misperception?

The moment the thought popped up in his mind, he immediately denied it—no, he definitely didn’t have hallucinations; that dog had indeed just squatted in front of his bed. Modesty aside, he understood dreams and illusions better than the vast majority of First University students; it made no sense to be confused by a small dream.

”Tuan Tuan, did you see it? That dog... was it squatting in front of my bed just now?!” Zheng Qing placed his last bit of hope on Fat Cat.

The Fat Cat, who had been snoozing on Xin Fat Man’s pillow, lifted one eyelid, grunted half-heartedly, then lifted a paw to cover its ear, turned over, and continued to snore loudly. Just like the other fatso on the pillow.

”See, you heard it, right?!” Zheng Qing said joyfully: ”Tuan Tuan saw the dog too!”

”I think its grunt sounded more like ’don’t bother me’ or ’how would I know’... something like that,” Xiao Xiao shrugged, taking the toothbrush with toothpaste squeezed onto it from Sprites and adding before popping it into his mouth, ”Though I’m not a cat, you are not a cat right now either.”

His last explanation stuffed back the retort Zheng Qing originally wanted to make.

The young scholarship student sulked, taking the hot towel from Sprites and placing it on his face. The steaming heat dissipated his last bit of drowsiness and made him more certain of the scene he had witnessed before.

”Could it be that you’ve already killed that dog, and its ghoul is haunting you, seeking revenge...” Xin Fat Man was still sprawled on the bed, half asleep, as if talking in his sleep.

”Bullshit.” Zheng Qing replied concisely, finally giving up on fussing over the matter.

Then, while tying his shoe laces, he saw a faint bite mark on the upper part of the shoe.

They will say I gouged it out with my fingernails, Zheng Qing thought angrily while tying his laces and decided to hang a few more anti-evil charms by the bed.

As for that dog, it will eventually show its true colors—Zheng Qing was quite confident about that.

As it turned out, his confidence was a tad premature.

While practicing his morning exercise on the grass of Flying Garden, he had just finished a set of ’Unarmed’ with his eyes closed. Upon opening his eyes, he saw the dog frolicking with Poseidon. The two fools chased each other’s tails, darting back and forth across the grass.

”Dog!” Zheng Qing yelled, startling Xiao Xiao almost to the point of choking.

”Where?!” Doctor, coming out of his meditation, put on his glasses, looked all around, but didn’t see the dog’s figure.

Zheng Qing stood before him, a picture of helplessness.

”It ran away,” the young scholarship student said while lifting Little Fox’s tuft of fur, pulling it upward slightly: ”But this time I have evidence... Dong Dong, tell daddy, just now, was there a dog imitating a cat’s meow playing with you?”

The Little Fox hung its tail, looking vexed.

It had just been enjoying itself playing, and its playmate had been scared away by Zheng Qing’s shouting—it decisively shook its head, resolved not to betray a friend.

Xiao Xiao sighed, looking at Zheng Qing.

”Even though I don’t understand the fox’s language, I think I get what it’s saying,” Doctor said with a displeased expression: ”Also, besides a cat and a fox, can you find a more reliable witness? One that speaks human language.”

Zhing Qing didn’t respond to Xiao Xiao.

He was clenching his fists, looking down at Poseidon’s butt, contemplating whether to beat up the Little Fox in his hands—the Little Fox was hanging its ears, looking pitifully innocent—Zheng Qing wasn’t fooled by its appearance.

Utterly lawless, it has learned to lie?! What’s next, tricking gold out of his pocket?!

But such thoughts, he could only ponder in silence.

Even with ten times the courage, he wouldn’t dare to lay a hand on the Little Fox casually. If he did, then next time he met Su Shijun, Su Daxu wouldn’t just cut off one of his shadows.

”It will come back.” The young scholarship student finally lowered his fist, confidently saying to his companion: ”Next time, you need to turn your head faster...”

”Okay, no problem,” Xiao Xiao replied noncommittally, closing his eyes again.

He hadn’t finished his morning exercise yet.
