High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1388: Chapter 135: The Unexpected Guest at the Class Meeting

In addition to facing the jeering and mocking from his peers due to the ’study room incident’ that afternoon, another presence that made the young taxpayer-funded student, Zheng Qing, feel uneasy at the class meeting was Professor Yao.

Ever since learning of Professor Yao’s identity, Zheng Qing found himself increasingly unable to look directly at that ever-smiling professor. This feeling did not subside over time, but instead grew stronger.

There were less than ten minutes left before the class meeting began.

Zheng Qing was already feeling restless.

He even felt that Xin Fat Man, who had wrapped his arm around his neck a few minutes ago to ’torture’ him into confessing what he had done with Jiang Yu that afternoon, now seemed so kind and benevolent.

”What are you looking at?” The young taxpayer-funded student, seeking to start a conversation, poked the chubby man’s arm with the tip of his feather pen.

Banna sucked in a breath of cool air.

”The Beta Town Post!” His face wrinkled from being poked by the pen, but his arm holding the newspaper remained steady, his attention focused on the content: ”...Some wizards believe that the existence of the ’Northern District Wizard’ threatens the Wizard Council and the Moon Council, and plan to initiate a proposal in the Alliance to review the legality of the ’Northern District Wizard’... This is a dangerous action.”

Upon hearing about the Northern District Wizard, Zheng Qing immediately became interested—this made his nervousness about Professor Yao’s arrival recede a little—the young taxpayer-funded student leaned forward, edging closer to the chubby man’s arm, squinting his eyes to discern the fine print on the newspaper:

”...The crisis in the Magical World is at a crossroads—not because we are approaching the limits of the ’Non-Spread of Forbidden Curses Treaty,’ but because the emergence of the Northern District Wizard might overturn the relatively stable state between the wizards and the Clans of the Moon that has been in place for hundreds of years.”

”Ever since Big Wizard Albert published ’The Four-Dimensional Property of Magic Power’ in 1925, the Wizard Council and the Moon Council have been at constant odds over the rights to conduct dimensional fluctuation experiments. And now, this originally ’Yin and Yang Fish’ balanced mode is challenged by ’barbarians at the gate.’”

”Reliable information indicates that a dangerous proposal is circulating in the wizard society of the Northern District, newly established less than a month ago, that Northern District Wizards also have the right to possess Forbidden Curses. This is a major challenge to the current order of the Wizard World... Regardless of whether this proposal is true or not, it will threaten the fragile balance between ’Wizards and Under the Moon’, perhaps even encourage dangerous ideas within certain wizard societies to boldly conduct experiments that the Alliance has strictly prohibited...”

Northern District Wizards also want to dabble in Forbidden Curses? Zheng Qing raised his eyebrows; Sister Korma had never revealed even the slightest thought related to this. He highly doubted that this news article was another sensational piece by the Beta Town Post just to grab attention.

Unfortunately for Zheng Qing, he had no time for such musings.

He hadn’t finished reading the article when the Stick Figure by the classroom door shrieked:

”Old Yao is here! Old Yao is here!”

”Those not afraid of death, continue chatting, continue sleeping!”

Zheng Qing ’swooshed’ back to his seat and sat up straight. This display of proactive behavior drew sideways glances from several of his companions. In the past, although students would show a certain degree of respect following the Stick Figure’s warning, they still dragged their feet somewhat.

The classroom door was pushed open with a whoosh.

Professor Yao, as always, biting on his pipe, strode up to the lectern with great strides. He had lecture notes under his arm, and he raised his arm to signal the young wizards to be quieter—although the classroom was already very quiet.

”Today is the last day of May and also the fifteenth class meeting of this semester,” Professor Yao said to the young people below, smiling as he bit on his pipe and exhaled smoke: ”Before we start the meeting, I need to remind you once again that there are less than two weeks until the final exams, that is, including Saturday and Sunday, only about ten days left...”

Under the lectern, most students were merely listening with half an ear to the professor’s oft-repeated stories. Everyone was devoting more attention to the review questions in front of them. They figured it would be more useful to go through one more magic potion recipe than to listen to Old Yao’s droning.

Unlike other students, Zheng Qing also had his head down, but from time to time he would lift his eyelids to sneak a peek at Professor Yao on the stage, trying to discern the subtle differences between the old monster and the professor — unaware that to Old Yao up on the stage, his little movement was glaringly obvious.

Just as Zheng Qing was surreptitiously spying on Old Yao, the voice from the lectern suddenly came to an abrupt halt.

The students all lifted their heads, curious to see what was happening on the lectern.

Zheng Qing also took the opportunity to pretend to casually lift his head and took a legitimate look at Old Yao.

He saw Professor Yao holding a pipe in one hand and pressing the other on the lectern, leaning slightly forward, his originally small and black eyes now rounded and bulging, as if he had seen something surprising.

Without needing him to speak, everyone followed his gaze to a corner of the classroom.

It was exactly the corner where Zheng Qing and others were sitting.

The young state-funded student felt the urge to fall backward with his head tilted back.

”I didn’t do anything,” he muttered, casting a helpless look around him, then noticed the astonished expression on Jiang Yu’s face, who was sitting in the front row.

Zheng Qing could clearly tell that Jiang Yu’s gaze was not on him, but behind him. Realizing this, the young state-funded student’s anxiety, which had been rattled by Professor Yao, finally eased a bit. He now realized that everyone’s gaze was not directed at him.

”That scared me,” the warlock tugged at the corner of his mouth, giving Xin Fat Man, who had turned around, a strained smile.

Beside him, Xiao Xiao nudged him a bit.

Zheng Qing followed suit, withdrawing his smile, and like everyone else, turned around to look at the back row.

A little dog was squatting on the windowsill in a classroom corner, ears perked up, and its little tail flapping, raising a cloud of dust. Several sprites were gathered left and right of the little dog, seemingly at a loss. It appeared that they didn’t know how to handle this uninvited intruder.

Even though the yellow and white patches on the dog had dimmed compared to before—making it look dusty, as if it had just rolled in an ashtray—Zheng Qing could still easily tell from its eyes, expression, and posture that this was the same Gouzi that had escaped from him and Jiang Yu not long ago.

The Gouzi that had imitated a cat yowling up in the cat fruit tree.

He also finally understood why Jiang Yu’s expression was so astonished.

It wasn’t until this moment that Professor Yao’s slightly displeased voice rang out in the classroom:

”Who brought a dog into the classroom? Don’t you know this is a behavior not allowed by the school?”

As if noticing the surprised eyes of the classmates, Gouzi cheerfully wagged its tail and opened its mouth, obediently meowing: ”Meow~~!”

The whole class was bowled over.
