High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1202: Chapter 264 Saturday Morning (Part 3)

In the depths of the Silent Forest, before the temple ruins, outside the Lingxing Gate.

Two mice lined up in a row, sitting on a branch extending outward from a Return Soul Poplar, silently surveying the quiet depths of the forest, not uttering a word. Below them, the Wandering Wizard, draped in a gray robe and wearing the pointed hat of an old-school wizard, hugged his arms as if he had fallen asleep.

”Heh heh...”

A snicker, like a cold laugh, emanated from the distant bushes, sounding very conspicuous in the chilled woods. The insect beasts, previously chirping chaotically, suddenly shut their mouths upon hearing the laugh, as if mice had just spotted a cat.

”Who? Who is there?”

Among the two mice and one man, Fei Rui had the smallest build and was also the most timid. Hearing that ’heh heh’, the soft fur on the back of his neck instantly bristled. His toes twitched lightly as a faint red magic fluctuation quietly gathered, seemingly ready to throw a series of Fireballs into the bushes at any second.

The Rat Immortal sat motionless on his wooden sedan, eyes squinting, mouth closed, as if he were asleep.

The Wandering Wizard slightly lifted his pointed hat, revealing a pair of keen eyes, and looked toward the bushes.

”It’s just an Irrigation bird,” the Wandering Wizard scoffed after taking a few looks, ”For someone who’s considered a high-level wizard, how can you not distinguish the sound of an Irrigation bird?”

An Irrigation bird is a magical creature that resembles a pigeon and likes to live in low-lying bushes. It often feeds on various insects in the forest. Its meat is delicious, and its feathers and eyeballs can break Illusion Technique magic, making it very popular with wizards.

Because of its popularity, this magical creature had been hunted to the brink of extinction and rarely appeared on the market anymore.

Fei Rui’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment upon hearing the Wandering Wizard’s mockery and he hopped to his feet, ”Who, who can’t tell the difference? I—I was just being cautious! You understand caution, right?”

”Understand, understand, understand,” the Wandering Wizard placated, as if soothing a child, ”I know it’s been over a decade since you’ve been back to Silent Forest. It’s natural to be a bit unfamiliar with the environment here... no offense meant.”

This explanation was in line with what Fei Rui wanted to hear, and the soft fur on the back of his neck settled down again.

When he looked toward the depths of Silent Forest once more, the hamster could no longer remain silent. He reached out his toe to poke the Rat Immortal’s wooden sedan armrest to remind him, ”We’re just going to watch them go in? Shouldn’t we go to the San You Bookstore and warn that Yellow Flowered Cat?”

”Warn about what? How to warn? Who will warn?” the Wandering Wizard asked three questions in a row before confidently declaring, ”I bet that if you even mention to that cat that there’s been an anomaly in the small world, that cat would dare to swallow you two whole without so much as plucking a hair. As for me, showing my face in front of it might result in a scratched face... I’m not going.”

”That was just an accident,” Fei Rui grumbled, anxiously spinning in circles on the branch, ”Who knew the school would dump those pollutants into that small world...”

”When we saw the sun and moon shine brightly in the sky, we should have guessed this point,” the Rat Immortal finally spoke, his voice very calm, ”High Order beings while alive can manipulate the cosmos; after death, they can invert the starry realms. Even if a wisp of their essence falls, it can resonate with the surrounding environment’s mana, sustaining some existence and giving birth to various anomalies.”

”A small world exhibiting the anomaly of the sun and moon shining bright in the sky... we should have considered these things.”

”But we didn’t know back then that they wanted to summon those beings from the deeps of Starry Sky,” Fei Rui explained, as if this conversation was a rehearsal, gesticulating as he spoke:

”Although we weren’t clear about the specifics of the battle within the ’sandbox world,’ according to the Wandering Wizard, ’Six Fingers’ had his hand shattered there, leading to the birth of a Five-Forked Serpent in that little world when it was created... To clean up for those little guys, I personally took care of that serpent! Took me all night!”

This was him boasting of his achievements.

”...We had no idea that the school would throw the contamination left by that toad into it! And sealed it within that little world’s moon. If it wasn’t for those kids’ Array linking to the Starry Sky, causing the lunar phases to change, who would have discovered such a coincidence?”

This was passing the blame.

After distinguishing merits from faults, a scapegoat had to be found, so Fei Rui concluded, ”So you see, it’s all the bitch Destiny’s fault!... And that wretched toad’s fault, too!”

As a being from the deeps of Starry Sky, Satoguya, resembling a toad in appearance, was referred to as ’big toad’ or ’wretched toad’ by some who didn’t show much respect.

Several months ago, when descendants were killed, the Ancient God had cast its gaze into the wizards’ world, seeking to investigate the truth, but as soon as its prying eyes arrived, they were punctured.

Perhaps a big shot in the school, worried about the contaminated aura from Satoguya’s damaged eyes affecting the campus and the students, had balled it up and thrown it into the newly born little world outside the forest, transforming it into a moon.

Everything could have been fine.

But Korma’s Magic Ritual, by connecting with the beings of the deeps of Starry Sky, inevitably caused a stir in the ’homogenous’ lunar seal within, leading to violent changes in the little world’s lunar phases.

”Old Mouse, you’re quite familiar with that little girl, aren’t you? Don’t you know what she wants to do?” The Wandering Wizard easily found a loophole in Fei Rui’s reply and reminded him, ”That Little Witch called Korma, she even bought a piece of Satoguya’s descendant’s flesh at my store a few days ago.”

”I know she wanted to help the Tricksters of the North District escape their tragic Destiny, but I didn’t realize she would turn her gaze to the deeps of Starry Sky,” Rat Immortal said softly: ”Just like what happened in that small world... I thought she was trying to seek answers from the ancient Sages through time. The ripples of time in that little world were so clear, so suitable for tracing back.”

”So it’s all Destiny’s, that bitch’s fault.” Fei Rui swore under his breath, waving his little paws at the sky.

”What is your final conclusion then?” The Wandering Wizard looked up at the two Mice on the tree branch and inquired, ”To stop those Little Wizards’ adventure?”

Both Mice fell into silence simultaneously.

”Or just watch,” Rat Immortal ultimately sighed deeply, his voice very cold, ”Every wizard should be responsible for their own choices...”

It was extremely rare for Fei Rui to say nothing further.

The forest was steeped in silence for a moment.

In the distance, within the bushes, the cold laughter of the Irrigation bird’s ’hehe’ could faintly be heard again.
