Chapter 1494: Chapter 1495: Supply Officer, Wang Youbao

However, when the spy reported that there were nearly 1.2 million troops in the Chilin Imperial City, everyone lost their enthusiasm, feeling that this battle would surely be harder than any they had fought before.

A cornered beast still fights. The Emperor of Chilin was making a last-ditch stand, completely determined to fight to the death with them.

As a monarch, even though he was cruel, the Emperor of Chilin still had many loyal soldiers. Most of the soldiers he brought to the Imperial City were especially loyal to him, while a small number, though not as die-hard, still decided to defend the Imperial City as Chilin people, refusing to let Chilin be trampled.

Moreover, these 1.2 million soldiers were almost all elite and seasoned.

This indicated how difficult it would be to conquer the city.

Including Xiao Changyi, everyone believed it was impossible to take down the Chilin Imperial City in one assault; it might require many assaults. Besides, their grain supplies were insufficient, and their understanding of the city was inadequate, so they couldn’t recklessly attack.

Thinking of the insufficient grain supplies, and that they hadn’t had a full meal in days, An Jing said, ”No matter what, we must wait for the grain supplies to arrive first.”

If you don’t eat enough, where would the strength to fight come from?

Xiao Changyi also understood this and nodded, ”Four months ago, Chengyu had someone send the grain supplies, considering the time, they should be arriving these days.” He paused, ”The Supply Officer is Youbao.”

An Jing immediately smiled, ”I’ve already talked to Wuyu about it. When Wuyu heard that Youbao was bringing the grain supplies, she was overjoyed. It’s been almost three years since she joined the army, and she hasn’t seen Youbao. It’s great that they can see each other now.”

Initially, Li Wuyu joined the army and trained in the military camp on the outskirts of the Imperial Capital, while Wang Youbao served as a Salt Transportation Officer in the South Shen area, so they had no opportunity to meet; later, when Li Wuyu went on campaigns with the army, meeting Wang Youbao became even more impossible.

By mid-September last year, Wang Youbao’s term as Salt Transportation Officer had ended. Due to his outstanding performance during his tenure, Su Chengyu had already transferred Wang Youbao back to the Imperial Capital, where he now served as a treasury supervisor.

The treasury supervisor is a high-ranking position, overseeing all the affairs of the treasury. This crucial role shows that Su Chengyu really valued and trusted Wang Youbao.

Previously, Su Chengyu wrote a letter stating that as soon as Wang Youbao returned to the Capital, he requested to be transferred to the military camp because he wanted to go to war, but Su Chengyu did not agree.

If it were An Jing and Xiao Changyi, they wouldn’t have agreed either.

Compared to being a soldier, Wang Youbao was more suited to being an official.

...

Three days later, Wang Youbao, the Supply Officer, finally delivered the grain supplies.

It took over four months to travel from the Xiyun Imperial Capital to outside the Chilin Imperial City, but although the journey was long, there were no incidents, and the grain supplies were safely delivered.

No longer having to go hungry, everyone was very happy.

Xiao Changyi immediately ordered the cook to prepare meals so everyone could have a full meal first, and upon hearing this, everyone cheered excitedly.

Seeing Wang Youbao, An Jing laughed, ”Youbao, it was a tough journey.”

Wang Youbao immediately responded with humility, ”It’s nothing compared to the hardships you face in battle, Master.”

Understanding Wang Youbao’s character well, An Jing knew that this wasn’t mere modesty but Wang Youbao’s genuine feelings, which made her smile even more warmly, ”These days, your master and I have been thinking about you, fearing that after all your hard work getting here, we might starve to death.”

Knowing that An Jing was joking, Wang Youbao also laughed, ”Luckily, the journey was smooth, allowing me to arrive on time.”
