Peaceful Farm Life

Chapter 1489: Chapter 1490 The Long River and Setting Sun

Now, the weather is at its hottest. Inside the room it’s bearable, but two people embracing each other, the combined body heat is much more intense than one person lying alone.

Despite this, Xiao Changyi said, ”Not hot.” Pausing, he asked back, ”Are you hot?”

An Jing immediately shook her head, ”Not hot.” Saying this, she even hugged Xiao Changyi back, holding him tightly.

After a pause, An Jing giggled, ”Even if you’re full of fire, I still want to stay in your arms.”

Hearing this, Xiao Changyi was quite pleased. He lowered his head, gave her another kiss, and then said, ”It’s a good thing you came back. If you hadn’t returned, I... would probably have gone to find you.”

An Jing immediately disagreed, ”You’re the Great General, you can’t leave the camp, you need to hold the fort in the army.”

”Nothing is more important than you.”

Even though An Jing still disagreed with what Xiao Changyi had just said, she felt instantly sweet as honey and took the initiative to kiss Xiao Changyi.

After kissing, An Jing became serious and said, ”The army has rested enough, it’s time to continue the march.”

Xiao Changyi nodded, ”Tomorrow, I will tell everyone to prepare, and we will set off the day after tomorrow.”

”Now everyone believes it is truly the will of heaven. We should have a much easier time attacking.” At least now, Chilin’s morale has been reduced to its lowest point by this ’will of heaven.’

Meanwhile, on our side, morale is skyrocketing.

Xiao Changyi nodded again, ”Mm.”

...

The next day, Xiao Changyi gave orders: leave five thousand soldiers in Xilin City, leave five thousand soldiers in Jingye City, and the rest will accompany him to set off the day after tomorrow for Shuangli City.

Xiao Changyi plans to fight his way step by step to the Imperial City of Chilin. He has already chosen the route: first attack Jingye City, then conquer Shuangli City, moving progressively towards the Imperial City of Chilin.

Jingye City is a bit far from Shuangli City, and it would take the army more than ten days to reach the vicinity of Shuangli City.

On this day, seeing that dusk was approaching, making it inconvenient to continue forward, Xiao Changyi ordered a halt, set up camp.

The place where the army stopped was a vast grassland, with a long river running through the middle.

The sunset glow was splendid and magnificent.

As soon as she dismounted and handed Moon Stepping to a young soldier, An Jing walked towards that long river.

The long river with the setting sun was exceptionally spectacular.

An Jing stood by the river, facing the long river, the sunset, the red clouds on the horizon. While marveling at the spectacle, she let out a long breath, feeling unprecedentedly peaceful in the embrace of nature.

After standing for a while, An Jing sat down.

She remembered she had a flute with her, a flute made by her husband. Back then, she had played a tune from Liangzhou for her husband. Unconsciously, she untied the flute from her waist, put it to her lips, and the melody of the Liangzhou tune slowly flowed out, causing those who heard it to halt in their tracks and look towards An Jing.

There was no surprise, only feeling of sadness and grandeur.

The cruel scenes of war seemed right before their eyes, yet the soldiers faced death fearlessly with extreme optimism and magnanimity.

Then, those people went back to their respective tasks, except for Ye Zhi, who actually cried. As the Liangzhou tune started, a drop of tear unknowingly burst out from her eyes instantly.

She was homesick.

Very, very much.

Afraid of being seen, Ye Zhi quickly wiped away that tear and didn’t cry again. After listening to the Liangzhou tune a bit more, she pursed her lips, walked away, and went back to her own tasks.

What Ye Zhi didn’t know was that Gong Juechen had seen her teardrop moment, which felt like a knife cutting his heart.

He didn’t know why she cried, but he dared not step forward to ask. It seemed, if he asked, she answered, she would vanish from his life completely.
