Starting Off Survival With A Small Treehouse

Chapter 1181 - 624: Return to the World Tree (2)

”For the past twenty years, he has lived in agony, controlled by the opposition, with the Wei Family replaced and people in the city taken away for research. Faced with all of this, the controlled him was unable to resist.”

”Even if he wasn’t controlled, he couldn’t resist. Because once he resisted, there would be devastating consequences for all life, so... he placed his hope in us.”

Xu Ying pointed to herself, then to Xu Xin.

”In his view, only we could break this impasse. Only our arrival could prevent the underground human base from meeting the fate of losing more than half of its population. Until then, he had to feign compliance and hold out until our arrival.”

”Then we came. He... finally couldn’t hold on any longer. He unexpectedly, in front of us, committed suicide.”

Xu Ying spoke very calmly; she did not say how Wei Bai committed suicide, and Xu Xin did not ask either.

After all, the biggest witness was right beside them.

Wei Shishi exhaled shakily and raised her head, ”Grandfather, he really was waiting for your arrival the entire time. I secretly saw him more than once silently reciting Xu Ying’s name, daydreaming, even shedding tears. When I asked him, he only said that Xu Ying was the person he most wanted to see before he died.”

Xu Ying pursed her lips.

This was why when Wei Shishi first met her, she was so unfriendly.

Her grandfather had been waiting for her in agony for a full twenty years.

Perhaps it was also because she had imagined many unrealistic things.

Or maybe Wei Bai, to prevent her from worrying too much, used some casual explanations.

Anyway, now Wei Shishi would no longer treat her with that same attitude.

”... Those lapdogs of the alien invaders, can they really devastate the underground world?” Xu Xin asked the question he wanted to ask, ”If that’s true, why did they bother to infiltrate the underground world?”

”... No, they can’t.” Xu Ying shook her head, ”Those who came here are not the survivors from a thousand years ago, but the ones who survived a thousand years later.”

She pointed to Xu Xin, ”They are from the few batches before your group; their level is similar to yours, perhaps slightly stronger, given they have alien technology as their background.”

”Then...”

”Exactly, Wei Bai was... always kept in the dark.”

Xu Ying bit her lip, unable to resist sighing again.

”Those people don’t have such power. Previously, the incident where the mutated creatures were sent to major cities was probably the largest-scale operation they could manage. The Wei Family actually still... had the ability to protect itself.”

According to their previous assumptions, the ones who discovered the underground world were not the entirety of the alien invaders but that... creature with Shi Wanyun, half-human and half-monster.

That monster didn’t disclose the underground world to the other alien invaders, so there’s never been any large-scale attacks.

Without relying on the alien invader forces, what the half-human, half-monster can do alone is limited.

It’s impossible for it alone to devastate the underground world; at most, it can sporadically orchestrate beast tides to attack.

So, if Wei Bai had not submitted to them, maybe...

”How could Grandfather have thought of that at the time!”

Wei Shishi angrily slapped the table, ”At that time, mutated creatures had already invaded the heart of the human base! Even my parents, whom the Wei Family focused on protecting... doesn’t that prove they can kill everyone at will?”

”That’s not what I meant...” Xu Ying hastily explained, ”What I’m saying is...”

”...If this is true, then Grandfather’s half-life would have been...” Wei Shishi gritted her teeth.

”Your grandfather made the correct choice.”

Xu Xin was silent for two seconds before saying.

”If the underground world had not been infiltrated or attacked over a long period, that half-human half-monster might deem the underground world as worthless. It could then angrily reveal the underground world to the other alien invaders. At that point, the underground world might truly be devastated.”

”Hence, what your grandfather did was the most prudent and correct course of action.”

Xu Xin’s words eased Wei Shishi’s heart a bit, ”Is that so... Grandfather, he didn’t make a mistake, then...”

Xu Xin raised his hand to check the time.

Although he had many more questions, a considerable amount of time had passed.

The time within the World Tree flows rapidly at a hundredfold speed.

He decided to leave the details for later.

”Alright, now that I understand the facts, it’s time to do what needs to be done. Gather the Wei Family members and tell them, I have something to say.” Xu Xin stood up and said.

”...Alright.”

Wei Shishi immediately picked up the communicator to start contacting them.

”Yingying, what should we do about those weapon manufacturing factories?” Xu Xin turned to Xu Ying, who was deep in thought, and asked.

”Hm? Oh, since those factories were previously controlled by the opposition, I caused a big commotion, cleared out the people there, and mostly destroyed the equipment.” Xu Ying casually said a somewhat outrageous sentence.

The space-time near Xu Ying started to become chaotic, presumably because of this matter?

”Didn’t you say earlier that it could still be repaired? Then... should we transfer it all up directly?” Xu Xin asked.
