Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Chapter 249: Chapter 59: Hill’s Near Miss_2

His life was really full of pitfalls!

Hill turned around and walked into the cabin.

”Not going down for a walk?” Fran asked without lifting his head.

”Just looking from above is enough for me,” Hill said honestly, ”Right now, this place isn’t that appealing to me. I’ve grown too fond of forests and fields.”

Hill knew his tastes had changed a lot over the years, just like the Capital Keslow, which indeed astonished him. However, after looking a little longer, he felt there were too few plants and trees.

Even though there were street trees planted along the roads, and each residential area had its gardens and green spaces, he still felt there were not enough.

There were houses everywhere, and he was not used to it.

Fran laughed, ”Do you realize how much you’ve changed?”

Hill nodded silently.

Although he had long known that he’d been changed a lot by this world, it was nothing compared to the shock he just felt.

That was when standing on top of a high-rise building, looking down at the bustling traffic and the magnificent metropolis, albeit deeply impressed, he felt a splitting sense of belonging to the serene countryside, filled with fields.

The civil engineer, who once had his heart set on skyscrapers and monumental bridges, had completely become an enthusiast for the countryside.

”You used to think these buildings were really nice, wondering if you could build the same in your own territory,” Fran said coolly, ”When your town was just built, you cared a lot about how nice the houses looked, and you had the Undead Tribe send over many architectural plans.

But now, aside from the Alchemy Hut, you have no interest in any other buildings and don’t give them a second glance.

If it had been before, upon hearing that the Undead Tribe built a city like the Crystal Palace, you would have sneaked a peek no matter what.”

Hill hung his head, ”I understand now. Grandfather, thank you.”

Fran insisted on taking Hill out not for socializing or anything like that, but because Hill had been too immersed in nature, altering his disposition and temper significantly.

The abundant love of the Natural Consciousness for Hill indeed made his advancement rapid, but if Hill became too assimilated with nature, then it was possible that in the future he might really merge into nature and become a part of the Natural Consciousness.

Hill struggled not to become a bear, yet in the end, he might turn into a Spirit of Nature like Alice, loving what nature loves, hating what nature hates, completely losing his own preferences.

Perhaps not even like Alice, who still knew how to be lazy and capricious.

The Natural Consciousness wouldn’t mind Hill merging with it and wouldn’t remind Hill to be wary as it would against hostility; thus, he naturally continued to change until today when he was suddenly startled.

Fran shook his head, ”Don’t stay with me, go outside and take a good look, think hard about what’s beautiful in this city.”

Hill walked gently back to the bow, sitting on the ship’s rail.

In the bustling city, that mortal flavor gradually returned to his heart.

From the sun hanging high to the moon reaching mid-heaven, the glittering lights of Keslow gradually helped Hill rediscover that civil engineer he once had been.

How much had he loved these strange and wondrous buildings! Hill closed his eyes, slowly recalling every little detail of the past.

How long had it been since he last built houses for fun in his Mental Sea? When had his world become nothing but Magic and nature?

Hill was sorting out his own world and did not notice Uncle Adrian’s figure flying up.

Turning his head to glance at Hill, Adrian walked into the cabin, ”Teacher, what’s wrong with Hill?”

”He’s about to merge with nature, what else could it be?” Fran said irritably, ”Becoming a bear would be better than this!”

Adrian was shocked, ”How come I didn’t feel it?”

”He’s always had a good temper, so it’s hard to notice,” Fran shook his head, ”I only found out after becoming Legendary.”

”Hill is just too considerate towards others,” Adrian grumbled, ”He’s nothing like Melanie at all.”

”What did he say to you earlier about this ship?” Fran set up a Barrier before asking.

”Why would Teacher make such an ugly boat,” Adrian answered honestly, ”I said it was to His Majesty the King’s liking. He was quite dismissive, thinking His Majesty was talking nonsense, and that you were duped.”

”Hmm,” Fran nodded.

”Didn’t Teacher just hear that?” Adrian asked, puzzled.

”You were sitting next to him, so you might be more sensitive to his tone,” Fran sighed, ”and my judgment tends to be faulty.”

Adrian looked at Fran with puzzlement, ”What happened?”

”His Majesty the King has asked me several times about Hill and Melanie,” Fran frowned, ”At first, I didn’t think much of it, but later I realized there might be a problem with the two of them.”

”What?”

”One of them might be from His Majesty the King’s world,” Fran sighed.

Adrian furrowed his brows and said, ”Hill doesn’t seem like it!”

”That’s why His Majesty the King asked about Melanie,” Fran said coldly, ”But I don’t think it’s her.”

Adrian knew what Fran was implying; compared to William, Melanie was like a simpleton.

”But Melanie acts a bit like some girls from the Undead Tribe,” Adrian was still suspicious of Melanie, ”She acts without a plan, blindly pursuing pleasure. She only looks at the present in many things.”

”Girls from the Undead Tribe are mostly independent and strong,” Fran gazed into the distance, ”If it were them, they wouldn’t abandon the path of a Mage to choose mere pleasure. At most, they might level up more slowly, but they would never give up the power in their hands.”

”No, it’s also possible that she believes the teacher would never give up on her only child,” Adrian suddenly said, ”She’s always felt that even if she married the Earl, the teacher’s possessions should be hers to inherit, not mine. Melanie only started to get anxious when Hill was 10 years old, and you still wouldn’t see her.”

”You seem to want to prove that there’s nothing wrong with Hill even more than I do!” Fran exclaimed.

Adrian suddenly realized and sat down on the sofa with a laugh.

”Hill couldn’t possibly have any problems,” Fran sighed, ”Nature does not favor a soul from another world.”

Just like His Majesty the King, only because he had that part of a soul from before, was he able to return to this world.

Even so, he still had to exist in this world for a while longer to fully become a soul of this world.

”In this demon invasion, His Majesty the King received so much feedback from other worlds, it seems he hasn’t completely transformed yet.”

”So?” Adrian asked, puzzled.

”I also need to reassure myself,” Fran smiled, ”I don’t think that souls from other worlds are not my grandchildren, after all, he is the one I’ve been with for so long.

But if he is, I will have to slowly withdraw my affection. Otherwise, Legendary, he is doomed to fail the promotion.”

Adrian nodded, ”Indeed!”

Neither of them believed that Hill would actually spend thousands or tens of thousands of years at the Magister level.

If Hill were doomed to die, even his soul dissipating, Fran and Adrian would gradually withdraw their invested emotions.

The world of Mages is so cruel, no one mourns for a foredoomed passing.”

”Melanie?” Adrian asked hesitantly.

”I said Melanie loves pleasure, is simple-minded, lacks ambition, and blindly pursues love and freedom. Yet the King didn’t see a problem,” Fran wondered.

”Maybe their world has girls like that?”

”If you can’t understand it, let it go,” Fran said indifferently, ”Her mother once said it was a surprising accident. Perhaps there was some issue in between?”

Adrian nodded.

Mages don’t care much about the past; life is long, and what should be forgotten must be forgotten.

If Hill knew about this conversation, he would surely be curious about the soul of the deceased infant he had merged with, what kind of background it had.

Unfortunately, he knew nothing.

He simply sat on the ship’s railing, greeting the morning in Kexlote.

Opening his eyes and seeing Kexlote under the morning sun, Hill couldn’t help but exclaim sincerely, ”It’s so beautiful!”

Under the brilliant sunlight, between the streets, the carriages shimmered, and crowds moved to and fro.

The hustle and bustle of the city assaulted his senses, but Hill no longer found it unbearable.

He turned and flew up, smiling and waving at Adrian standing in the doorway, ”Uncle Adrian, I’m off to find the Teleportation Array, I’ll be back soon. Don’t worry about me.”
